Hello dear friends and welcome to my first makeover of 2019! It’s also Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday, so not only do I have a thrifty makeover for y’all today, so do four of my favorite treasure-maker friends! Be sure to look for their projects at the bottom!
Today I’m sharing what I did with this lattice wall cabinet I scored for $10:
I rarely pass up a good storage piece!
I went thrifting last week in search of furniture pieces since my inventory is very low at the moment and it was very slim pickins in the furniture department.
However I did find one drop-leaf table and several other goodies:
I thought it would be fun to work through all of these one after another until they are all done! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
Here is how the first of the bunch turned out:
I love you, paint.
Do you miss the lattice?
That was the first thing to go. Then I was left with these door frames that had an odd bar across the center of each one:
I did keep those strips of wood though because you just never know, you know?
I decided to add a hardboard panel painted with French graphics to the back of each to create a pretty closed storage piece.
I couldn’t think of how to unify the four “panes” at first, and then I decided that stretching one graphic across them all might just work!
To start, I cut the hardboard with my table saw…
Then I painted both pieces and the cabinet in my favorite white, Bit of Sugar by Behr, made into DIY chalk paint. (Recipe with video on how to mix it HERE.)
To add the graphics to the door panels, I found an image I’ve used many times before from the Graphics Fairy HERE. I saved the reversed version to my computer and uploaded it to Blockposters.com to get a larger print out of it.
You just type in how many pages wide you want your final image to be…now that’s my kind of math! It printed out in four pieces:
That worked out perfectly since I had four “window panes” to fill!
I used the old school transfer method (See more on that HERE.) to transfer the graphics to my painted hardboard using a pencil:
The print outs are in the reverse so that when you transfer them, they are right side up. They are available just like that from The Graphics Fairy:
I grabbed my go-to tools to paint in the letters:
That’s my favorite script brush for painting in those small details. Find the newer version of it HERE. Delta Ceramcoat acrylic craft paint works great and I’ve never had it smear when sanding like others I have tried in the past. Paper plates a la Walmart.
The right brush is essential for getting these small details…
The insides just got one coat of paint and a good sanding…
The back of the door is actually dry erase board. When I went to purchase regular hardboard (like brown pegboard but without the holes), Home Depot didn’t have any large sheets, so I bought this instead. It’s hardboard on one side and dry-erase on the other.
I completely forgot to get a photo of it, but it might be handy to have in a nice hidden area like this!
I gave the rest of the cabinet a light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper and sealed with my new favorite sealer: Dixie Belle Clear Coat in a satin finish. You can find it HERE. I’ve used it on several pieces now and as much as I love the silky finish that you get with wax, this clear coat just goes on so easily! I use this brush HERE to apply it, made especially for sealers.
This was such a fun project to work on. I hope you enjoyed it too!
Don’t forget my friends have trash-to-treasures of their own to share today! Visit the afters at the links below!

Ah-DOOR-able Christy! 🙂 Love the color, so soft. The graphic is wonderful.
Did you change the closing mechanism on the doors?
Enjoy your week and I look forward to all your sensational transformations.
Christy says
Ha ha I see what ya did there lol! Thanks, Christina! I reused the original door closing thingy. Hope you have a great week too! XOXO
Karen says
Why do u always paint everything white? I woul like to see some color.
Christy says
Because I LOVE white! I would seriously paint everything white if I could, and it is what sells. These makeovers are about so much more than a paint color though. This sad cabinet now has a whole new chance to be loved again! XO
Marcie Lovett says
Brilliant! I figured you’d paint it, but replacing the lattice took it from tragic to tres magnifique! I’m sure we’ll be seeing that lattice in an upcoming post ???? As for that little towel hanger – I can’t see how paint could help it, but then I didn’t see any hope for this cabinet either, did I?
Don’t discount the power of your smaller pieces. It’s fun to watch them transform and inspiring to see a project that a novice might be able to complete.
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie!! I did save the lattice…just in case lol. So glad to hear you enjoy the smaller projects as well since that’s about all I could find ha ha! See ya Thursday! XOXO

Robyn Wright says
What? You went thrifting and there is no video?! 🙁 What a gorgeous haul! So, First, what size are those printouts? If larger than 81/2 x 11, what type of printer do you have? (I’m still looking). Second, I LOVE IT! Can’t wait to see what you do with the rest of your goodies! Happy New Year!
Christy says
I know ha ha! Nancy and I will be thrifting again soon and we’ll be sure to video! With blockposters.com, your enlarged image will print out on several sheets of regular paper. Normally I would need to trim the edges and line up the graphic, then tape it together to get my large print-out for transferring, but this one printed out in four sheets and that was just what I needed for this project. Thank you!! XOXO
Kathy says
You go, girl! You could do this in your sleep!!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Kathy!! Wow I would be really productive if I could do this in my sleep for real ha ha! XOXO

Christy says
Thank you so much, Leticia! Lots of practice, but the right brush makes all the difference! XOXO

Christy says
Thank you, Jen!! The right brush is key for sure! XOXO

Christy says
Thanks, girlie! I am so envious of your furniture stash! There is hardly anything out there right now! Sounds like it’s time to plan a thrift shop shakedown! XOXO
