Hello amazing friends! How is everyone doing? We have been hunkering down here and doing okay for the most part, but I have to admit, I’ve had a couple of days of feeling a bit stir crazy. Having everyone home has definitely had its effect on the state of our house, so on Friday, the boys and I gave the house a good cleaning. Then on Saturday, I tidied up the garage. Although I have been doing really well at keeping my workspace organized since I finally got it together earlier this year, pieces have moved in and out and it just needed a good straightening. I can’t tell you how much better I felt with a clean house and workspace! It somehow helps to clear my mind and allows me to regain my focus! Does cleaning do that for you?
Today I’m sharing the final piece of my Winter haul!! It is just a small piece with a simple makeover, so I have a BONUS thrifty makeover for y’all today as well! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
First, here is the tray I’m making over today:
It already had a herringbone weave pattern on the bottom, so it didn’t need anything more than a simple paint job:
This is two coats of Cotton.
A light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper highlights some of the herringbone pattern on the bottom…
I sealed this tray with Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in Satin using their applicator sponge.
Had I tried to paint or stencil any kind of design on the bottom, it would have been uneven I’m sure with that pattern.
Super simple, but way better than how it started, right?
Okay now for your bonus makeover!
I picked up this fun little table for $5 about a week before we were officially on shut-down:
This was the perfect opportunity to try a new Dixie Belle color. This is Mermaid Tail:
Isn’t it perty??
I thought this could be a great little table to add to a small powder room for a little charm and added pop of color:
This is two coats. I sanded all over with 220 grit sandpaper and sealed with two coats of Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in Satin as well.
I just love those spindly legs!
Such a pretty color!
And that completes this haul WOOHOO!!!

Mary Kaiser says
WOO HOO, you did it!! I loved all the pieces, but my favorite was the $3 lamp make over! I am looking forward to see what you do with the big cabinet on Thursday! I love cabinets like that with glass in the front, and you always redo them so beautifully!
Christy says
Ha ha yes…it always feels so good to complete a haul!! Thank you, Mary! I do love that lamp as well…I even kept that one and it is right here in my office. Take care, my friend and I’ll see ya on Thursday! XOXO
Sheila DelCharco says
What a pretty little table! What will you do now that your stash is gone and you’re on shut down? Also, I don’t know how you paint stuff so quickly. I’ve been using this time to paint and it takes me forever! I guess it’s the years of practice you have under your belt! Thanks for always inspiring me!
Christy says
Thank you, Sheila! This is where my hoarding is paying off lol…I have plenty to keep me busy! Painting does take time, but having to have mine done to share here helps for sure, so don’t be too hard on yourself. I love that you are using your time to create!! XOXO
Christina says
Christy, the tray is simply charming! Love the white, of course. Just the right amount of distressing to add that special something. 🙂 The table is adorable and I , too, love those spindly legs.
Cleaning and tidying makes me feel better in the whole house. 🙂
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! These were simple pieces, but a little paint sure helped. And yes…cleaning is very therapeutic! XOXO
Betty Bilnoski says
I love the tray – so simple but so pretty. And the little table is adorable! I can’t ever find cute stuff/furniture at our local thrift store. I think our town is too small for the good stuff. One of these days I’ll have to expand my thrift shopping to a bigger city. Right now all I need to do is shop my attic and get started.
My favorite piece from your Winter haul is the $3 lamp (how to rewire a lamp). If you ever decide to sell it, well, you know I’d love to have it.
Thanks for continuing to share with us. I look forward to Tuesdays & Thursdays. Hugs!
Christy says
Thank you, Betty! You are lucky to have an attic full of treasures! I love the lamp too…I almost forgot about that one! As long as I am able, I’ll keep showing up ha ha! See ya Thursday!! XOXO
Susan says
Hi Christy,
Well it’s so hard to choose a fav, they are all so pretty in their own right! I love the tray you did and agree it didn’t need more than the paint- the texture already adds so much. I find painting very relaxing and am working through my own stash of pieces I didn’t find time for before “all this”. I pray for an end to this pandemic soon and wish everyone peace and safety. Thanks for your inspiration always!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Susan! I too find painting relaxing! We will get through this…we live in the best country in the world and people way smarter than me are working tirelessly to find ways to combat this nasty virus. Stay safe and stay well! XOXO
Janice Holt says
Amazing what a little paint can do. Love the color on the table and of course the white is the best color (well white is not really a color is it). Glad you have something to show us Thurs because I was already thinking what will she do now since she can’t go thrifting. You know this is the highlight of my Tues and Thurs.
Christy says
You are so right, Janice! Paint works wonders! And you know I agree that white is the best ha ha! Luckily, I have plenty to work on, so no worries there! See ya Thursday! XOXO
Toby says
love love love!
can’t wait to see what’s next!!
Christy says
Thank you, Toby!! XOXO
Donna says
Congrats on finishing your haul! I loved all your pieces. That last little table was so neat too! Can’t wait to see how you do the cabinet!
Donna
Christy says
Thank you so much, Donna! It sure feels good to have another load done! Glad you enjoyed the bonus table too! See ya Thursday! XOXO
LORRI RAUSCHER says
I agree this tray is so pretty painted white..clean ..can use it anywhere if whites are colour. Doesn’t feel good knowing you completed your stash.. 😉cant wait for your next pile..lol..do you have more
stuff in your garage?
Christy says
Thank you, Lorri! I wasn’t sure how the tray would paint up, but it looked quite pretty when it was done…I still have it on my coffee table ha ha! And yes, it feels SO good to have completed another haul! Luckily, I could probably put another couple of hauls together with what I have lol! My hoarding is paying off! 😀 XOXO
Gail says
Excited to see your next haul! Would love to know the price you got for your projects at the end of each haul.
*Christy, Thx for personal reply several weeks ago. Our closest paint store (AND curb service!) didn’t carry Bit o Sugar or Behr paint but with the name given, they were able to put i it in the computer and match it with their brand. Now, hubby is no longer bored as he works on two projects (and two more when those are done! I am busy sewing masks.)
Christy says
Thanks, Gail! If an item makes it to the shop before I post the makeover, I try to add what I priced it for. However, I’m usually sharing my pieces before they make it to the shop. That is a great idea for a post though and I might just do that with several items that have already sold! I’m so glad you were able to get your paint color matched…that’s awesome!! And bless you for sewing masks! XOXO
Carolyn Price says
I always enjoy seeing you work your magic, Christy!! Such a classy tray and a lovely fun little table! I used to have a great little “handkerchief table” from Bombay and Co. (that’s what they called their corner version) years ago that was a perfect little table for a plain corner. Loved, loved, loved it.
One of thee days, I would also love for you to provide a link to your re-do on your fabulous coffee table. I saw it peeking out from under your stylish “new” tray. I am not finding what I’m looking for in the stores (many modern items but not my style) and, since you make everything look so easy, I might give a thrift piece a try if I find the right piece.
As always, I love what you do!! <3
Christy says
Thank you so much, Carolyn!! I used to love Bombay company! You can find my coffee table here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/square-coffee-table-redo/ Take care and stay well!! XOXO
Carolyn Price says
Oh, thank you for the link, Christy.
Thank you for the well wishes, too.
Blessings and good health wished for you all, too!
XOXO
Christy says
You’re welcome and thank you! XO
Linda Petersen says
Love the little table💗. The color is really pretty & would be perfect in a small space as a focal point! The tray looks good too. Can’t wait too see the cabinet. I have a request, would you do another sewing project please? I still go back to the American Girl post when I work on doll clothes. Stay safe, X0❤!
Christy says
Thank you, Linda! I do love a good sewing project, but there just hasn’t been a need for something sewn lately. Maybe I’ll try to think of something! The doll clothes were one of my very favorite projects ever. 🙂 XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
Your tray turned out so nice! Now the table, that is my favorite! It looked so bulky and dated until the Mermaid got hold of it! Love that color and the curves really show up now. Thanks for your support and positive attitude. I have heard so many sad stories about how people are acting in stores that it breaks my heart. Instead of appreciating those who are working with the public, some nasty people are selfish and mean. Love reading your blog and seeing all your creative make overs. Stay strong and be safe!
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! Funny how that pretty color took away the chunkiness! I am so grateful for those that continue to work to provide services and goods for us. They deserve as many blessings as they can handle! I’m also so thankful to be able to keep showing up here and I will keep on showing up until I run out of things to share, which because of my advanced hoarding skills, will never be an issue ha ha! XOXO
Kimberly says
Hi Christy! 😊
Love the tray, love the white (always)!!!
Any chance that petite table is for sale? Could you ship it?
I have been wanting a small table beside my bed, as their is not room for a large one. If so, get the dimensions?
If not, I will mist have to keep my eyes out for one to do after we’re all back to normal.
Thanks, Kim🌻
Christy says
Thank you, Kim! White is always a win in my book too lol. Unfortunately, I don’t ship anything larger than what will fit in a USPS flat rate box. I’m so sorry! XOXO
Sue Mellette says
Christy, You are so talented! I love the tray. White is always a great choice and distressing it makes the tray really pop. I love the Mermaid Tail color for the small table. It was such a great choice. What was once a plain brown table is now a stunning piece. I love the way you style it with the white pitcher and pink flowers. My favorite piece from this haul is the $5 thrift chest. I just love the transfer and the pop of apricot on the drawers. Your final bonus, the precious mermaid tail painted table, would be a close second. Thanks for sharing your creations with us! Stay well.
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Sue! I agree white is always a win, but I really enjoyed painting the table! And yes…that little chest was my favorite too! You stay well too! XOXO
Sue says
I really like all your pieces, but the picture I liked the best was the one of your Dad’s hands. Just seems like something special you’ll always remember about your Dad and your time working together. Keep creating!
Christy says
Aww you made me tear up a little, Sue! YES!! I’m so happy I have those photos as a reminder of time spent with my sweet Dad! XOXO
Jo-Ann says
Wow the little table in Mermaid Tail, you changed it from drab to fab. Very impressive!
Christy says
Thank you, Jo-Ann! XOXO
Joan Ness says
Love these makeovers and how you show us things done with the different colors of the Dixie Belle paints! Do they have a sage green color? Would love to see it on a makeover.
Where did you get the pretty pink flowers in the white vase? Are they something currently available or from your stash?
Can you even imagine how full the thrift stores will be after everyone brings in their “stuff” after all the closet, cupboard and spring cleaning that’s being done now?
Christy says
Thank you, Joan! Dixie Belle makes a color called Dried Sage that you may like. You can probably google it to see an example as I haven’t tried it myself yet. It is a good seller though! The flowers came from Michael’s. I got them at 75% off at an end of season sale, but they have them every year, I believe. And yes I can’t wait until the thrift stores open back up…ours are closed but they have still been taking donations! XOXO
Sue osborne says
Christie,
The tray make over seemed simple, but what a great addition to the “setting”. And the little table? Amazing and inspiring! I am constantly looking at all your past makeovers and creations, so inspiring.
But the very best thing? Right now, I , and many, many other fans need you to keep us positive and healthy and hopeful. I just heard a very smart person say that hope makes us responsible for making good things happen, so we have to take action, rather than retreat in fear.
You are doing just that. Thank you.
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that, Sue! I will keep on showing up here and I’m so glad you are still joining me! This us helping me too! Stay well and stay hopeful! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
I can’t believe you got such a good deal on that table, Christy! Then again, it wasn’t so great looking before. I know I always say this, but it’s amazing what a little paint can do. The tray is lovely now, too.
So sad to see another haul done, but I know you have plenty in reserve 😉 While you’re keeping yourself busy during the lockdown, you’re also inspiring those of us in the same position who can’t concentrate on doing anything now. Thank you and keep ’em coming!
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie! Paint works miracles for sure! And you know me well lol, I do have plenty more to make over around here! Glad I can offer a distraction if only for a little while! Stay well. XOXO
Constance Colvin says
BABAM! Chrsity you’re an inspiration! ;-D
Christy says
Aww thanks, friend!! XOXO
Addie says
Hey!!! I bet when this is all over the thrift shops will be loaded, as everyone is cleaning out!!!
LOVE the little “mermaid” table. It came out very cute.
I am betting that new display case will be a bleeder!!!! Get the “Boss” out!!!!
And thank you!!!! it really worked on my piece!!! When I went to get Boss I noticed it came in 2 forms….clear and white. Since my piece was going to end up white…that’s what I got . I did put a final coat of “Cotton” on top of the Boss….was it necessary?
Christy says
Thank you, Addie!! Yes!!! Our thrift stores are closed, but they are still accepting donations, so when this is all over, the stores are going to be jampacked with goodies! I can’t wait! Girl, you know I bossed that thing right away! Worked like magic. It really does work amazingly well! I still paint over the White Boss even if I’m just painting it white. The Cotton has a brighter, more even look than the Boss alone, I think. I’m so happy to hear you love it too!! Stay well, my friend! XOXO
Janina says
Have to agree how much clearer my mind is, how much better I feel and more productive I am when my physical space is in order (and my bed made)! I now try to clear up my art workbench every day when I am done, and it’s such a pleasure to return to.
Wow, that Mermaid’s Tail is one gorgeous colour. And that table was an absolute steal at that price. Great combo of table and colour! ❣
Christy says
Thank you, Janina! That really was a great deal for that little table. I scooped it right up when I saw it! And yes…my mind is so much clearer as well after I’ve cleared my physical space…that’s a great way to put it! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
HI Christy! I am so glad you and yours are safe and well. I think my dog is getting tired of me. 🙂 I am digging out my Mermaid Tail now and looking for something to paint. That is such a cute table. I haven’t been to Goodwill in forever but i have enough here to keep me busy. Maybe i need to clean my apartment so i can get motivated. It makes me happy every Tuesday and Thursday to see what you have done. I will send a pic if i find something to paint. Take care!
Christy says
Oh ha ha…that made me laugh aloud about your dog! I hope you find something to use this pretty color on and please do share if you do! Stay well! XOXO
Maryellen Webber says
Wow Christy, you did an amazing job on the pieces of your Winter haul! They tray looks great with the white paint and the table is so cute! I have a similar table that could use a makeover. Wish I lived closer to you to get some expert advice!!! I’m afraid I will ruin the table if I tackled it on my own! Lol Take care of yourself!!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Maryellen! Don’t be afraid…you can always practice on a small piece that you don’t care as much about! XOXO
Naomi S says
Christy, regarding the herringbone tray–once again, what a difference a simple coat of White Paint makes! I love the look of the paint and the distressing. Glad you kept it simple.
Now I have a question for you. I bought a very similar wooden tray at a thrift shop but instead of the herringbone pattern it has an circular imprint of “House of Representatives” right smack in the middle of it. What are your tho’ts on how to conceal that imprint? I want to paint the tray but just painting it will still allow the texture of the imprint to show through. I tho’t of using a decal but I think the imprint would still show. What do I do? Peel and stick tiles? Wood filler? ????
Christy says
Thank you, Naomi! Yes, I agree the tray needed to be simple with that pattern. How about this idea for your tray: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/thrift-store-tray-makeover-with-shiplap/ You can always have the guys at the hardware store cut them for you if you need. I do like the idea of a peel and stick tile as well! Good luck! XO
Petra says
Both are super lovely 🙂 What are you going to paint next? xo
Christy says
Thank you, Petra! I have a couple of things lined up already and thankfully, I still have a ton of things around here I can work on! XOXO
ROSE LEFEBVRE says
I like the tray. I have a couple bottles just like yours!
Christy says
Thanks, Rose! I love the pretty blue bottles. I look for them at my antique mall! 🙂 XOXO
Julie Timmerman says
Hi Christy,
You are such a gem! You’re so talented in many ways but,
I feel so blessed in this quarantine and this crazy time the
World is going through that we can still look forward to seeing what treasures you have to share on Tuesdays and Thursdays😊. So thankful!❤️
Christy says
Thank you SO much, Julie! I truly appreciate that! I will still be here…and I think I need it just as much ha ha! Take care!! XOXO
Susan says
Hello Christy. I was oogling painted furniture on Pinterest and came across this lovely little table. You did a great job! What a pretty color. You kept it simple with minimal distressing. I tend to way overthink my projects, enuf to keep me up at night. I’ve never tried Dixie Belle. If you don’t mind me asking, what did you use to apply the paint and top coat?
Christy says
Hi Susan! Thank you! I used a 2″ angled Dixie Belle Brush to apply the paint and Dixie Belle’e blue applicator sponge to apply the topcoat! Their products are wonderful! 🙂 XOXO
