Sweet Friends, I have a fun treat for y’all today!
By now y’all know my blogging bestie, Nancy from Artsy Chicks Rule:
She and I went thrifting and caught it all on video so we could share it with you!
We visited all of my favorite thrift stores in search of something we could each make over.
Before I share what we found, here is our video:
(If you have any trouble viewing, you can see it HERE.)
Okay so you now know that I found this cute shelf at our very first stop of the day:
It was $6.98, and I rarely pass up a cute shelf. They are just so functional!
And here is how I revived it:
Who knew it could be so cute?
Do you remember this fabric? I had it left over from my dining room chairs, so it was basically free. 🙂
Adding fabric to the back really dressed up this otherwise plain shelf.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use and love.
I started by painting the shelf white with my DIY Chalk Paint (Recipe HERE.) Then I topped it with one coat of one part Annie Sloan French Linen mixed with two parts Bit of Sugar DIY chalk paint. I did that so that when I sanded, a little of the white would show through.
I sealed the shelf with clear wax.
For the back, I cut a piece of hardboard using my mini circular saw.
This has become my favorite saw for cutting pieces like this. It is small so it’s easy to handle. Just line this notch up with your pencil line…
I get nice super straight cuts every time!
Then I did a dry fit to be sure it was a good fit, painted the board so it would be nice and white through my fabric, added a layer of matte Mod Podge, and adhered my fabric.
Here it is in pictures:
I cut the excess fabric off with a fresh razor blade.
There is no need to add another layer of MP over the top.
Here’s a close up of the fabric:
I love that it adds a little texture to this sweet shelf. The fabric originally came from Hobby Lobby.
I attached the new fabric-covered backing to my shelf using my nailgun.
It looks pretty dressed up with a few pieces of my thrift store ironstone…
Perfect for a dining space!
It would also be great in a nursery or in a child’s bedroom to hold all sorts of treasures.
Nancy is sharing what she bought that day too! She found this breadbox on our very last stop:
Visit Nancy HERE to see what she did with her breadbox!
And remember that headboard I found for $15? All furniture was half off that day so yep…only $7.50! It’s still awaiting its big makeover.
I hope you enjoyed coming along thrifting with us!
If you missed our last thrifting video, you can see it HERE!
I’ll be back on Tuesday with this fun tray table I scored for $10!
Have a fantastic weekend!
UPDATE: Check out how I gave this little tray table a whole new personality HERE now!
XO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!

Thanks, Mary! You are SO sweet! We will definitely be bringing ya’ll more videos in the future! 🙂 XOXO
Christina in SW FL says
Beautiful job Christy! The fabric really dresses up the shelf in all its pretty new color. Bet it sells quickly in your shop.
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! I hope so! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
You made that a beauty Christy!! Who would have thought it could look like that!! Love it! 🙂 xoxo
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy! Ha ha yep…I think it turned out even cuter than I thought it would! 🙂 XOXO
Karen in Minnesota says
Wonderful makeover on the shelf! You removed the metal hanging tabs at the top. How did you attach the shelf to the wall?
Christy says
Thanks, Karen! you have a good eye! I decided to replace them with D-ring hardware like these ones: http://amzn.to/2FKkM0k They are attached with small screws. 🙂
Barb S. says
That is so cute!! You did such a good job!!
Christy says
Thank you, Barb! XOXO
Elisabeth says
I love your videos!!!!! Please make more. When you use fabric in drawers, what kind of fabric do you use? Is it like cotton or duck cloth weight? Thank you in advance and have a groovy day! Elisabeth
Christy says
Oh yay! I’m so glad you enjoy them, Elisabeth! We plan to make them more often from now on…they are a lot of fun to do! For lining drawers, I usually use cotton. I little bit of weight to it doesn’t hurt, but it’s not required. XOXO
Marie says
Super cute!!! Wouldn’t you just love to see the expression on the previous owner’s faces if they saw the transformation?
Christy says
Thanks, Marie! I know, right?? I think that about a lot of things I’ve found! 🙂 XOXO
Daisy MartinStephens says
Loved the video! Only one suggestion…move the camera slower. I wanted to see it all! You guys have GREAT thrift stores! I went to 5 yesterday but they had very little to pick from.
Christy says
Thank you, Daisy! Ha ha will keep that in mind next time! 🙂 We are very lucky with our thrift stores. We hit about six different stores that day, but we still have several more we didn’t even visit! We have hard days too…Nancy didn’t find anything to make over for this post until the very last stop! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
So sweet! That fabric looks great with the shelf, Christy.
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie! As soon as I opened my fabric drawer, that was right on top! XOXO
Robyn Wright says
I hate it when videos won’t play when I’m at work. So, I watched it on my phone. LOL! What a beautiful makeover!! I love it!
Christy says
Good thing you have your phone ha ha…glad you were able to watch the video! Thank you so much, Robyn! XOXO
Kim from MI ???? says
Loved the thrifting video! ????????????
The headboard you found was beautiful! Hoping it turns into a beautiful bench! ????
Do you find a certain day of the week or time of the day you find better treasures???
Christy says
Yay I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Kim! I love that headboard…hoping to turn it into a bench for sure! They say the beginning of the week is best since people usually drop things off over the weekend, and that is mostly true, but I do get lucky sometimes. The key is going often! 🙂
Teresa says
Your thrift store is way better than the ones around here!
Christy says
We are very lucky as we have a ton of thrift stores in our area! We hit about six that day! XO
Sandi says
Loved the Thrift Store Shakedown Videos! You and Nancy are both so beautiful and smart! Also loved the size of your thrift shops! In my area, they are 1/4 the size. Too bad, but maybe that’s a good thing. I would spend all day in a large store!
Both of you did such an amazing job with your makeovers–always love to see the “before” and “after”. Thanks for the great videos! Looking forward to more!
Christy says
Aww you are so sweet, Sandi, thank you!! We are very lucky with the size and quantity of thrift stores in our area! And yep having so many options gets me in trouble sometimes! So glad to hear you enjoy the videos! XOXO
MaryJean says
You are so lucky to have someone to go thrifting with! You can tell you both get along great! And I think I want to move near you, you have such great thrift stores! They are huge! Ours are much smaller and I can only count on one of them to always have something good. I live south of the city and I used to work north of the city. I think the next time I’m having lunch with my former co-worker I’m going to check out the thrift stores up that way.
Love the tour and love your shelf!
Christy says
Thank you, MaryJean! I am really lucky to have Nancy, and she is literally the only person that will go thrifting with me, unless you count my youngest…he likes to look at the toys. Thrift stores give my Mom and sisters the heebee jeebees lol. Then they see what I find and what I do with it ha ha! We are very lucky, we have a ton of thrift stores in our area, and I think we visited six different places when making that video! XOXO
MaryJean says
Aha! I think I found someone to go thrifting with me! And I found some more thrift stores to check out! When my husband and I would go to garage sales we would say we are going “sale-ing”. I think I will call this “thrifting” now. LOL
Christy says
Ha ha you must be thinking of your grandbabies! My son loves to look at the toys…it’s like going to the toy store but everything is out of the packaging lol! Have fun scouting out your new stores! XOXO
Melinda says
I went thrifting today as well. Didn’t find a thing:*( oh well……love the stores you went to.;they’re are nicer than the ones we have here. Maybe i need to go to the next town over. lol
Christy says
Oh that stinks! I don’t always find things either, and some days I get lucky. We visited six different stores that day! I do best at the stores that send a truck around on a regular basis to collect items, and stores closest to the nicer neighborhoods! 🙂
Julie Briones says
Very nice, Christy! Love the gray/white, light and airy! So happy that you have thrift stores like this near you. 🙂
Christy says
Thanks, Julie! We are very lucky with our thrift stores for sure! XOXO
Sherry Stuifbergen says
I loved thrifting with you! Love all the stores and variety! I liked what you both did with your “trashures.”
Christy says
Thanks, Sherry! We have a ball making those videos and plan to do it more often. 🙂 XOXO
Bonnie says
Oh you two are a hoot for sure. I wish I still lived in the south I would look you all up. Another great job, loved the fabric on the back. My daughters are 28 & 29 and are dreading yard sales(I am a junkie) they say but Mom you have stuff from 2 years ago. My closet is the same way lol. Still thinking of your son and you Christy Hugs!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Bonnie, you are so thoughtful. We are doing well. And yes ha ha Nancy and I do have a lot of fun thrifting together! I am the same way…I keep shopping even though I already have a huge stack of things to make over lol. Oh well…it’s our guilty pleasure, right? XOXO
Holly says
You two are just adorable! I would kill to shop in a big thrift store like that 🙂 Thanks for sharing your experience – xo Holly
Christy says
Aww thanks, Holly! We are very fortunate with our thrift stores in this area…we visited about six different ones for this video. Hoping to film another shopping trip soon! 🙂 XOXO
Naomi S. says
VERY cute, Christy! That’s Johnson Bros. ironstone dinnerware, isn’t it? I have some random pieces but I sure wish I could find some more at a thrift store. It’s a little pricey new but I love the shape of it.
I like that you gave the little shelf a back. And the striped fabric is perfect for it. What an improvement to that plain, blah shelf! Good job!
Christy says
Thanks, Naomi! Yep it sure is! I scored big when a Good Will store near me was selling 35 pieces for $6.25! I keep adding to it as I come across stray pieces here and there. 🙂 XOXO
Ivory says
I love, love, love your work. So beautiful!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Ivory! XO
