Harlequin Painted Side Table

Hi my sweet friends! I have been knee-deep in floor demolition at my house this weekend, but I am thrilled to say that I actually started laying my hardwood floors today…can I get a WOO HOO?! I’ve been sharing some of my progress on Instagram, so you can hop on over and see what I’m talking about if you like!

I painted a couple of pieces for my booth last week before demo began so today I’m sharing one of them with you. This is one of three tables I picked up at the Salvation Army at the same time I picked this one that I shared during March Madness.

It was just a plain little table before:

The top had a scratch running right down the center, its  a little hard to see in the above photo.

It was only $20 and I knew a fun pattern on the top would camouflage it perfectly!

I love the harlequin pattern! I have done it on several pieces and I never tire of it.

This is painted in my go-to ivory, Cottage White by Behr. I used it to make DIY chalk paint. It is the perfect backdrop for French Linen which I used for the pattern. I’ll be putting together a full guide on how I paint my pieces soon! Update: See it here now!

What do you think of my roses? Thrift store! The Silver pitcher was an estate find from a while ago, but I found this bunch of roses stuffed into a gallon sized Ziploc bag for $1.25 and thought they were just so pretty once I set them free!

I replaced the drawer pull with one from another table after I gave it a couple of coats of Rustoleum Heirloom White Spray paint and roughed it up a bit:

I also lined the drawer with a little of this pretty contact paper I had left:

This table makeover was actually quite simple to do…

French Linen Harlequin Painted Side Table How-to

  • I painted the base color in my Cottage White by Behr DIY chalk paint.
  • Then I created the perfect Harlequin pattern with this how-to.
  • I taped off one set of diamonds using FrogTape.
  • Painted two coats of French Linen chalk paint
  • Removed the tape immediately
  • After about an hour, I taped the rest of the diamonds. (Yes I reused the FrogTape!)
  • Painted two coats on those diamonds
  • Removed the tape immediately
  • Voila
  • Sanded a bit, sealed with Annie Sloan clear soft wax

Pretty easy, and although this is a busy pattern, the muted colors make it totally work!
