Did the title confuse you much? If you are here for my daily March Madness makeover, you have come to the right place! To those of you here for the Three Month Decorating Challenge, welcome to March Madness, 31 Thrifty Makeovers in 31 Days as well! Thrifty makeover #26 is coming right up!
But first things first. I am involved in a three-month challenge with some super talented ladies where we all chose an area of our homes and we have to restyle it each month for three months. The catch is we can only use what we already have, besides fresh flowers.
I chose my china hutch. I usually change it up for Christmas, and after I remove my decorations and get it how I want it, it stays that way till the following Christmas! This challenge definitely helped me to break out of that rut!
This is the hutch I am referring to, way back when:
I almost sold it at our annual yard sale, but in the eleventh hour I chickened out.
As a reminder, here it was at Christmas:
And for the first month’s challenge, I kept it clean and simple with my ironstone and mercury glass:
It’s a real snooze fest now that I look back. This challenge pushed me to really change it up for Month #2:
I love the addition of the black scrapbook paper! I shopped my house for several black pieces I could use against the black damask print.
Well for month #3, I just could not bring myself to remove the paper. I still love it and so I decided to lighten it up a bit by removing all the black elements:
Notice anything else different?
I added a chicken wire door!
I thought it would be a fun change.
Now are you ready for your March Madness thrifty makeover #26?
I found this at the Good Will, and ended up paying $1 for it:
It’s hard to see here, but the glass is convex. I thought at the very least it might make a cute Christmas ornament, but instead I made this:
I originally made it to hang in my kitchen. I make six meals a week, and you know what helps to make it so much more bearable enjoyable? I dance.
I dance like no one is home. My husband bought me a Bluetooth speaker that syncs with my phone so I keep it in the kitchen and jam while I cook! Well, my boys don’t always love my taste in music so I always sometimes get complaints, but I don’t let them ruin my groove. Hence the need for a “Don’t Disturb this Groove” sign!
I think it looks cute hanging on my new door!
I used the same TAP paper to transfer the graphic and fabric as I used on this little chair.
And now for the rest of my hutch…
I used the same flowers from last month because they feel like Spring:
I kept the bird cages, but swapped out tea cups and hydrangeas for saucers and nests:
I also swapped out the pictures for more current ones…
I kept the ironstone. I still love how the white looks against the black.
All of my ironstone pieces are thrift store finds. I love to decorate with them.
They are sitting on crocheted place mats that I love and use everywhere. I’m not so sure doilies are in fashion, but I LOVE them. 🙂
Did you see I painted my pantry door? It used to be a dark taupe color. That was my husband’s choice, but I’m slowly eradicating it. I already painted all the crown in the living room that used to be that color too. It’s part of a ceiling project we’re working on. I can’t wait for it to be done because you know what’s next? Hardwood floors!!! Woohoo!

Creative hutch. Love how your mind works. Some items I incorporate in mine. Battery operated lights, placemats and napkins that add extra color & protection
My newest, a large star with and on/off button AND a timer button. The star is a hit!

Christy, the hutch is beautiful! The black back really pops with all of the white. The happy dance sign..love it!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Heather! Now when the boys give me that look, I just point to the sign! 🙂
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says

Thanks, Nancy! Oh I sing too and it’s not always pretty, but they have to put up with me if they want to eat. 🙂

Wow, I really like the development of your space over the three months! The door is so cute!I have some of the same dishes you have! I gave up many years ago on keeping kids from breaking dishes and went with an all white theme. I buy all my dishes 2nd hand and have a huge variety of designs. It has ended up to be very fun, and looks pulled together and pretty too! Now when a kids smashes a plate I shrug and clean up the mess: 50 cents down the drain, and an excuse to keep my eyes open for more pretty plates. : ) Now I’m thinking I need to do a 3 month challenge in MY house!
Christy K. James says
You are a girl after my own heart, Becky! I bet you have a beautiful collection of white dishes! I have kind of a plate addiction and when my husband breaks one, he shows me excitedly because he knows I’ll be excited I get to buy more. 🙂
laura@top this top that says
holy moly, you are so ambitious. that black back drop is so beautiful against the white and everything that you have styled in the hutch. love love. will you keep it up for a while?
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Laura! I think so…now that our 3 month styling challenge is over, it will probably stay like that till Christmas ha ha. 😉

This post finally has given me the courage to paint the Duncan Phyffe dining set, hutch and buffet my MIL gave me. it will be AWESOME but she will have a heart attack to see “good wood” painted over but why should I live with a set that I just don’t love? My hubs says I should go for it.
Also..THANK YOU for using doilies! I love my Grandma’s gorgeous handmade doilies but was feeling they were too outdated. I am getting them out of the drawer immediately!
Christy K. James says
Good for you, Peggy! That set is yours now, so you need to be the one who loves it. Keeping the top of the table stained is a good way to add a bit of contrast and keep some of the wood if you like. Especially having your hubby on board, I say go for it! And doilies for me are like a comfort food for my décor. I always scout them out at estate sales. You are lucky you have your Grandma’s to enjoy. 🙂
Marie@The Interior Frugalista says
I noticed the chicken wire door right away and I think it looks fantastic! I’m glad you kept the pretty paper for this months challenge. It looks equally stunning styled with white. I can see that paper styled with pops of a bright color too. The cute sign you made is awesome. You sound like me when I’m painting in the workshop – I’m always grooving to my bluetooth. Hmmm, maybe bringing it upstairs to the kitchen might inspire me to cook more often. Nah, it would have to include a glass wine.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Miss Marie!! Now that I’m not expected to change it again in a month, it will probably stay like this till Christmas lol, and I’m glad I kept the paper too. Maybe I need to add wine to the dinner making dance party? Then my boys may never get their dinner. 😉
Christy @ Our Southern Home says
Christy,
So glad you left that paper. It’s too pretty to not be enjoyed longer than a month! Love the smart addition of the chicken wire door. All so pretty!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Christy! I didn’t want my time with the paper to end! My hutch will probably stay like this till Christmas now lol. 🙂
Shanna Gilbert says
This hutch has come such a long way in these 3 months! Can’t decide what I love most the door, the birdcages or that sweet little frame! I’m still loving that scrapbook paper on the back of the shelves. Gorgeous job!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Shanna! I’m glad I kept the paper. I thought about switching it up, but I just wasn’t ready to say good bye to it yet! 🙂
andi says
Okay, I love the damask, but you didn’t tell us what kind of music you groove to??
