Did you know that thrifting can benefit animals as well as your wallet? It’s true! There are thrift stores all over that support local animal shelters!
A few weeks ago my friend Jeanette from Country Design Style challenged us to make over something from one of those thrift stores to show our support for their efforts.
We have adopted shelter animals in the past. Right now we have a cat that we rescued from my ex- MIL’s farm where the dogs thought she was a toy. Poor thing!
I’m happy to report she has had a long and happy life. She turns 18 this month!
My local shelter thrift is called Second chance thrift. A portion of their proceeds benefits the Virginia Beach SPCA. You can do a google search to find a benefit thrift store in your area.
I purchased this little vintage table there last Fall:
I knew it was the perfect project for this challenge. Although I painted it last Fall, I never posted about it.
I gave it a nautical feel by painting a nautical compass on the top:
Painting this table gave it an entirely new personality, don’t you think?
I started by painting the table using my DIY chalk paint in Behr’s Cottage White. Then I taped off the Octagon on top with Frog Tape:
Look how little Brennan was just a year ago, and he’s wearing his Nantucket shirt…perfect for this new look. 🙂
I taped off the stripes…
Then I painted in the outer edge with Annie Sloan’s Country Grey , which is more of a tan color.
I removed the tape after two coats, while it was still wet.
Then I used this technique to transfer the compass graphics and letters.
I also used Frog Tape to paint the points of the compass:
I painted the rest of the compass and the letters in with black acrylic paint and a liner brush.
A light sanding and a coat of clear wax to seal it and it’s done!
This would be perfect in a beach house.
October is also Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! To find a shelter in your area, go to aspca.org/adopt .

We had a beagle named Norman. We then found two female beagles near our house. There was construction going on, and the poor puppies had been abused and were covered in tics and just a mess. They are now 12 and still shy with people. Our neighbor found a stray beagle who was malnourished and we adopted him too. Our grandsons named him Snoopy. My husband said he wanted to be a babe magnet when he was young but someone didn’t hear correctly and he became a Beagle magnet instead!!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha Beagle magnet! So cute. Your puppies are so lucky you came along to give them such a loving home! 🙂

Love the nautical look! Our calico cat, Fluffy, will be 20 in a few months!
Christy K. James says
Wow, that’s awesome! Sometimes it’s hard to believe my cat has outlasted three homes and a husband ha ha 🙂
Lindsay Eidahl says
Nice job! I love this table! We used to have a thrift store for the animal shelter, but it closed. Now, I am wondering if there is another one around???
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Lindsay! Ours is a bit expensive, but it’s for a good cause, so I don’t mind so much!
Jenna says
Super cute Christy! Love the way you did the stripes~ I had a calico cat that lived to 20 years old!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Jenna! I’m surprised to hear how long cats can live! I don’t think I ever imagined I’d have my kitty this long, but I’m glad I have 🙂

We have always owned rescues, ever since I was a little girl. My family and I have two precious princess puppies right now;Piglet, who is 3, and Kennedy, who is six months old. We love them very much! The Nautical table would make a perfect nightstand for my bedroom. I love it.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Lisa! It feels so good to give an animal in need a great home, doesn’t it? I’m sure your puppies are so happy! 🙂
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
So pretty Christy! Can’t believe you never posted about it before now!! 🙂
Bet it’s already sold!!

I know! I think I just wasn’t happy with the original photos I took and then it was tucked away in my Mom’s attic. It sure is a fun piece now compared to the before. 🙂
Marie@The Interior Frugalista says
Your fabulous two-tiered table would look great at a beach house (hint hint to our friend Wendi) LOL I love how it benefited a local animal shelter too. I need to check my local thrift stores to see if any them do the same. Your feline buddy is so cute! My Rexy was a stray kitten found roaming on an acreage too and he’s definitely enjoying the good life now.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! It feels so good to be able to give an animal in need a loving home. We love our kitty and I’ll be heartbroken when she leaves us because I’ve had her for so long!
Jeanette says
Christy, beach house??? That would look great in our cabin! You did an amazing job! Plus you had a sweet little helper too! Thank you for joining the thrift benefit. It’s incredible your cat will be 18, I thought it was a kitten!
Take care,
Jeanette
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Jeanette! I’m so glad I joined this fun tour for a great cause! My kitty still looks young and you wouldn’t know she was 18 except for the way she slowly climbs the stairs these days. She’s a real sweetie. Thanks for setting this all up! XO

I have been following your posts for about a year now. The posts have inspired me to redo some “abused and battered furniture” that someone gave me. After finishing the first redo project, my husband responded that he thought I should sell some of my redos. ( I have redone other items for our home only before.) So I purchased 3 more pieces of furniture later that week with the idea of trying to sell them. But what steps do I take to sell my items? How many should I have ready to sell before trying to sell? How do I decide the price to ask? Thank you for your response.
I enjoyed your 43 things about yourself on your birthday!
Christy K. James says
Hi Wanda,
SO happy to hear you have been inspired to tackle some of your own pieces! Isn’t it so rewarding to stand back and see what you’ve transformed? There are a few options for selling your items. You can list your items on Craig’s list. (My least favorite.) If you are on Facebook, you can search for an online yard sale page that is for your area. I love this method because you can see who you are selling to. You can sign up to do a craft show in your area. Googling craft shows and your town’s name may be helpful in locating local shows. I will say that it is hard to work to set up a booth with furniture that will only be open a couple of days, but I’ve had success before. I am finally trying my hand at renting a booth. If you have a crafter’s mall or antique mall nearby that rents booth space, maybe this is an option for you? Mine is month to month and I don’t have to be there, which is great. When pricing, I try to imagine what I would be willing to pay for something. I want to make sure I’ll get my money back too, so it’s important to keep that in mind when you are purchasing your pieces. Take a look around at similar items for sale also. Hope this helps a bit. I wish you luck sweet friend! XO

What awesome detail. The nautical theme really goes well with the style of the table. The new look is fabulous and that compass rose is perfect!! Your kitty is adorable, too!!

Thanks so much, Amy! What a fun tour! 🙂

What a great makeover looks great! Your calico fur baby looks like our Penelope that was rescued by my daughter, someone dropped her off at a garage… she is so sweet so happy my daughter rescued her.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Tammy! I’m so glad we saved my kitty too. Never imagined she’d still be with us 18 years later 🙂
Paula@SweetPea says
I love the style of the table that you found, the colors that you used, and the nautical look that you gave it. Is it in your shop or did you keep it.
Isn’t it wonderful that cats stay with us for so many years? My Miss Prissy lived to be 18. I hope you cat has many years left with you.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Paula! I have this table in my shop for now although I wanted to keep it, just like most things ha ha. And I hope we get to keep Holly for a few more years too 🙂

Love your table rescue, it’s perfect! Your blog and creativity always inspire me. I have Cooper, my empty nest fur baby. He is a curious mixture of maltese , shiz tu, and poodle. He is black and white and the “fetchingest” dog I have ever owned. He really helped me when my daughter left for college. I also enjoy seeing the pictures of your son, time goes by so quickly, enjoy every minute!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Cynthia! Sounds like your sweet pup was the perfect distraction when your daughter left and I’m sure now he’s irreplaceable! He seems like a really cute mix. And yes, time does go by so fast! Just seeing that picture from a year ago makes me realize it even more. Before you know it, mine will be off to college too!
Karen @ Dogs Don't Eat Pizza says
That is a great transformation! It doesn’t even look like the same table! Great job! And I love the pic of your rescued kitty!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Karen! 🙂

Christy such a wonderful way to support a good cause! Our animal shelter thrift store closed which was such a shame. All of our furry family members are secondhand and someones cast offs. Lucky us it’s our gain! Thanks for sharing your beautiful table!
Christy K. James says
I loved being able to be a part of this tour. Our rescue thrift is a bit pricier than most, but I don’t mind at all since it’s for a great cause!
