Hey there, sweet Friends!! Are y’all still hanging in there? Well I hope so, because I still have 13 more thrifty transformations to share with you as part of this crazy March Madness series, including this set of $3.25 thrift store containers I’m sharing today! Can I tell you how excited I am that I am finally working through that huge to-do pyramid in the garage? These little wooden boxes have been hanging around my garage for at least two years, y’all. That is just sad.
Here they are as I found them:
And here they are after I finally uncovered them again…
Cute, right? But wait till you see the fun part…
The insides!
I love this pretty aqua blue. It’s from Krylon:
I bought it for another project I have yet to share, but thought it would liven these up a bit too.
I sprayed the insides first, then chalk painted the outsides white.
Those cute owl knobs are from Hobby Lobby. I bought them a couple of years ago when I used to have to travel two hours to get to the nearest location. My Mom and I would make a day trip out of it so I could stock up on hardware. Luckily we now have a location about 15 minutes away.
And these cute knobs finally have a home!
I love the detail of the edges showing through…
I gave these one coat of paint on the outsides and then sanded a lot of it right back off. I love the contrast to the solid inside. I waxed with Annie Sloan’s Clear Soft Wax. No need to seal the insides.
What happened to the birds you ask? You can actually still see them peeking through the back lol.
Um yeah…but hey no biggie, right? No one will ever know they’re there. I imagine these in a kitchen holding utensils.
Or on a desk, or how about as cute planters for fake plants?
The glass container and the scoop also came from the thrift store as well as most of those wooden spoons.
Oh and the rolling kitchen cart they’re sitting on was a $15 yard sale find. You can see that HERE if you like.
I sure wish I had a spot for these, but I can’t keep everything…so off to the shop they go.
I’ll be back tomorrow sharing my neighbor’s desk that I painted last Summer plus our favorite patterned/textured projects from our Get Your DIY On party. Lots of inspiration on the way!

I like how, on many of your projects, WHITE is your go-to color! I can relate–it’s mine too. You did a fantastic job on this and, honestly, I like how the birds are peeking through.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Heather! I do use white a lot. It just freshens everything up. 🙂

Hi , Christy,
How cute! Just wanted to let you know those boxes were part of a set of four canisters in their hey-day (1970’s). I had a set with roosters on the front. They came with white plastic liners, and had wooden knobs on the top of a flat lid. You did them proud…..thanks, Karen
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Karen! And thanks for telling me more about them…sure wish I had the lids and liners! 🙂
Leticia says
These are so cute! you did a great job. I may have to make me something like this…My “spatula” drawer is running over! Thanks for sharing!
Christy K. James says

Christy, the containers are great, but the owl handles are adorable. I do think the handles that one can put on pieces and on furniture are like icing on a cake. Thanks for sharing. Always look forward to seeing your posts!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Joanne! You are so right…and choosing the finishing touches like these knobs is the most fun part of any makeover as well. XOXO

Great project and wood pieces at thrift stores are so cheap—love the little owl knobs…make these boxes very unique.
Thanks for the ideas, Sandi
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Sandi! Pieces like these are fun finds…so many possibilities! 🙂

Love these and that pretty pop of color inside. Oh how I wish we had Hobby Lobby here in Canada – you always find the best knobs there. Pinning to share.

Thanks, Marie! Time for you to take another trip across the border lol! They really do have the best knobs!

Thanks, Tania!! Me too…these are one of my favorites and they are so simple! 🙂
Catherine says
Normally I love love LOVE your ideas, but on this one I have to say I like the before better. Probably because I collect these little bird containers. I have 3 or 4 sets, in great condition – I think I started collecting them because my mom had a set so perhaps I’m just biased :). $3.25 is a steal, in good condition I’ve paid much more as they are “collectible”. Perhaps if the birds are not in good shape. I do love your paint job, and the boxes, just not on my sweet little birds 🙂
Christy K. James says
Aww so sorry, Catherine! I completely understand how these could hold sentimental value for you. I’ve had several readers tell me that these were their first set of canisters. I love how they turned out, but knowing how special they were (who knew?) to so many people, I may not have painted them. 🙂
