Hello amazing friends! I have a brand new makeover to share today! 😀
Jack had decided that he wanted to pick out a piece of furniture to work on to make a little money, so we stopped by the thrift store closest to my house a few days ago and all furniture was 50% off. That never happens, but they were overstocked so it was our lucky day.
The first piece with potential I spied was this sofa table:
Jack wasn’t interested in it, so I nabbed it for myself. It was marked $34, so we got it for $17, not too bad considering it is solid wood and was in great shape aside from a serious scratch on the top. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
When I was deciding what I wanted to do with this table, I kept thinking about this child’s desk makeover, and how I loved how the top of it turned out. So, I decided to do the same for this sofa table, and white wash the top:
I love the breezy coastal feel this treatment gave this table.
And it was simple to do! I started by sanding the top down to the bare wood with my rotary sander:
After removing all the dust, I pulled out this packet of driftwood stain that was in a goodie bag from one of the blogging conferences I attended. (You can find it HERE.)
I used half of it when I did the child’s desk. It lasts for three months, but that meant it had expired in February…oopsie. So I mixed the other half, vowing I would not let the remainder go to waste this time. (Just mix the powder with water.)
I applied it to the table top with an old rag and it turned this awful shade of gray:
I expected that however since I’d been down this road before. When it happened to the desk I used it on, I did not like it at all either and so I had to come up with a plan B.
I brushed on white latex paint that I had watered down just a tiny bit, then quickly wiped it off with a clean cloth, making sure to go all the way across with the grain of the wood. Then I went back with a new rag dipped in water and diluted the white-washed look further until it was blended just how I wanted it.
UPDATE : Here is a more recent piece I did a similar finish on using Dixie Belle products:
I found this to be easier! See that post HERE.
I also used the same Dixie Belle products on this piece:
See more of this makeover HERE.
You can also see that process in action in this video:
If you have trouble viewing, find it on YouTube HERE.
Ok…now back to the original post!!
I love the results.
I sealed the top with Annie Sloan’s clear soft wax.
The legs are painted in Behr’s Ultra Pure White made into DIY chalk paint. (Recipe with video HERE.)
It was hard to get a head-on shot since my big ole island was in the way. This is the best I could do…
See that Beach Rentals sign in the background HERE.
I’ll be back on Tuesday with my Trash-to-Treasure girls sharing another new makeover that Jack and I teamed up on, this French Provincial bedside table:
Hope y’all have a great weekend!
UPDATE: See what this bedside table looks like now HERE!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!

Those Queen Anne tables are everywhere and you got a deal on that one! Now it’s more Queen of the Beach and less Queen of Typical Furniture at the Thrift Shop. The driftwood top is just lovely, Christy. (Even better this time around.) Jack missed out on this one, I think! Can’t wait to see what he comes up with next week.
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie!! Jack sure did miss out ha ha…I told him that too! XOXO

I was wondering Christy, as someone who has gotten into furniture makeovers this year, if you have any advice how to tell if a piece is real wood or not?
Christy says
Good question! You usually can tell by looking at the underside of a piece like a table or in an unfinished area like inside of a dresser after removing a drawer. You should be able to see the grain of the wood, but as you’ll see on Tuesday, it’s not always easy! XO
Julie Briones says
I LOVE this, Christy! I’m thinking I will do this technique to the tiered side table I’m going to tackle soon. 🙂 (I don’t know if it’s because you are an awesome photographer, but in both cases, I liked the effect of the stain even *before* the whitewashing.)
Christy says
Thank you, Julie! This was really simple to do! XOXO
Debbie in TX says

what piece did your son pick out?
Christy says
Thank you! My son picked out a desk. It is very hotel-esque, but we have a plan for it! 🙂
Rose Lefebvre says
It is lovely and looks nice with your decor.
Christy says
Thank you, Rose! I am very tempted to keep it! 🙂
Jeri Walker says
Christy, I love your table make over, I just bought that exact table at a yard sale, how can I achieve the gray look for the table top without using the mixture that you said you did not like???? I would love for mine to look like that.
Christy says
Thanks, Jeri! I didn’t like it as it was intended to be used, but I LOVED it as a base for white-washing! Any “driftwood” color stain should work though. 🙂
Terri Hughes says
I love that you can still see the wood grain. I have a table just like this one. I am tired of looking at the dark color of the table, I think I will do the same to mine. Turned out beautiful.
Christy says
Thanks, Terri! I love being able to still see the wood grain as well. I say go for it! XO
Christina in FL says
Hey Christy, this table is a winner! I like both the driftwood and your additional white wash. 🙂 I have an old sewing cabinet (with one of my vintage sewing machines in it) that this treatment would really perk it up. When I get it out of storage it’s going to see some citri-strip, sanding and a whole new look.
If you put this table in your booth it is going to go FAST! 🙂
Have I told you lately how much I adore your minimal distressing? :))) I know your makeovers are a bunch of work yet you make pieces look so joyful. Thank you!!
Christy says
Thank you, Christina!! I love old sewing machine cabinets, even to use as side tables! I’m actually considering keeping this table…we shall see. And thank you again…I think a little distressing goes a long way! XOXO
Annie says
It turned out lovely! I love the driftwood/white washed top 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Annie! XOXO
Carole says
I love these tables because they are so elegant. You have made this one so special. I hope you keep it. I wonder why you are able to find these tables so easily. Here in Michigan they are very rare. I go all over looking for them and never find even one.
Christy says
Thank you, Carole! I am really tempted to keep it. This is only the second one I’ve come across. I think they are such versatile pieces that people just don’t get rid of them that often? Have a great weekend! XO
Joan Clanton says
My sister and I fought over an almost identical table at a garage sale last summer! it was $5! The top was scratched, but after a good sanding, i stained it then waxed the top. The rest of the table was painted navy blue. It’s a perfect addition to our 4 season sun porch that’s primarily white with navy cushions and blue delft accessories accessories. My eight foot dining table (that we made) has a white washed top– great minds think alike. Love your blog!
Christy says
Thank you, Joan! I bet yours looks fabulous, and $5?? What a steal! Yes…love the white washed look! 🙂
Donna says
The table looks very pretty and very happy in her new home! Love it!
Christy says
Thanks, Donna! Still trying to decide if she’s a keeper! 🙂
