Hello, Sunshines! On Thursday, in honor of my yard sale this past weekend, I shared several makeovers that were items I rescued from my own yard sale a few years ago. You can see those HERE if you missed them! And, after a fantastic yard sale weekend, I’m back with 10 trash-to-treasure yard sale makeovers that came from a very successful yard saling day last spring!
I’ll be back to brand new makeovers on Thursday!
This is everything I found on that day of yard saling last spring:

And I’m sharing all of them today!
Every piece here needed some love, except for one, so I called this haul my trash-to-treasure yard sale haul, and the name was very fitting!
The recaps of these makeovers are the Cliff Notes versions lol. I didn’t go into all the details of every step, every product I used, or what each piece was sealed with, but I linked to the original posts where you can find that information!
My neighborhood Sale
I’ll share each in the order I found them, starting with my own neighborhood.
Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Makeover #1
My first find was this small table that I paid $5 for:

It’s okay…had I found it towards the end, I might have passed on it, but for $5, I really couldn’t go wrong. I thought it might be fun in a pretty color.
It needed to be sanded though since it didn’t appear that the paint was adhering very well:

I broke my no painted pieces rule on this one!
The existing paint finish got a good sanding first, and then a fresh coat of paint in this lovely Savannah Mist blue from Dixie Belle:

The top was stained with White Magic Voodoo gel stain using an applicator pad to apply it:

And here is the final look for this little $5 find:

I also added a fun touch to the front of the drawer with this Thorton Medallion Mould:

Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Makeover #2
Next up was this chalkboard tray that I just loved the chunky frame on:

That was also $5. The same sale had a giant lazy suzan as well that I bought also for $5. I like to use those to hold pieces as I paint, and that one has made an appearance here several times!
Instead of keeping it a tray, I decided to remove one of the round handles and hang it instead.
It got two coats of Fluff and then I pulled out the scraps I had left of this Pretty in Blue transfer:

I gave the old chalkboard a fresh spray and seasoned it well:

And here is the final result:

So cute! This transfer really dressed it up!

This piece sold almost right away in my booth!

There was a whole issue with this one that could have been avoided had I prepped properly, and you can see that in the original post HERE.
Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Makeover #3
At the next yard sale, I found three items. I picked up this bench for $15:

The trashy part of this one is obvious, but the rest was pristine. I would have replaced the fabric anyway, so that’s no biggie for me!
It did take me a minute to remove all of those nail heads though!

Then, I painted the base in a custom mix of about 25% Hurricane Gray with about 75% Cotton:

To recover the top, I used this gorgeous fabric that actually started out as a shower curtain that I found at the thrift store:

I finished it off with some double welt piping that I made and this project was complete:

Here is how this bench turned out:

I love this soft gray with this fabric!

And you would never know this started out as a shower curtain!

Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Makeover #4
The second item I found at that sale was this little suitcase for $5:

I just love these little vinyl cases, but I didn’t realize until I got it home that it was dented where one of the latches was:

Luckily, that was an easy fix just by giving it a couple of whacks:

I painted this piece in Fluff, a vintage white from Dixie Belle and then embellished it with the Overflowing Love transfer:

Here is how this one ended up:

So cute! But the best part is the inside! The old, dated insides were removed and replaced with this gorgeous patchwork fabric that also started out as a shower curtain that I picked it up at the thrift store many years ago:

I love it! The other side of the case is a little different:

See how I lined it, what I used to seal it, and more at the original makeover HERE.
Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Makeover #5
The last thing I found in my neighborhood was this vintage bookcase that once again, had already been painted:

I was drawn to the cute shape of this one immediately and I thought it was a good deal for $20.
Except, I would have to fix this cracking paint:

That ended up being way more work than I expected!! It all needed to be removed. I used a stripper which I rarely do, and I’ll just share one photo that pretty much says it all:

Never again!
After taking care of removing all the cracking paint, I opted for one of my favorite blues: Vintage Duck Egg Blue mixed 50/50 with Cotton:

Here is the finished product all cute and staged:

After all that work, a simple paint job was enough!

Neighborhood #2
I ended up going to two more neighborhoods that day, and at the first one, I found this table for $10:

This one had a split right in the middle of the top:

I sanded the top and then filled that imperfection in with some Dixie Mud.
I cheated and gave this table a coat of spray primer first, and then followed up with one coat of Fluff.

For the top, I had a plan to use this gorgeous Bountiful Beauty decoupage paper that I applied using Redesign’s Decoupage Gel in matte and a 2″ Foam n Dandy brush:

Here is how this one turned out:

And as you probably know I kept this one!!

See more details of how I did redid this one HERE.
Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Makeover #7
That was all I found in that area as most people there were selling clothes and children’s items, so onto the next neighborhood!
Neighborhood #3
On my first stop there, I found this cutie pie chair for $4:

This is the only piece in this haul that was in perfect condition! Funny though, the lady said to me as I was leaving, “That is going to be so cute!”. Did she know I was going to redo it? I never said I was. Weird ha ha!
She was right though! This one turned out SO stinkin cute!
It got a couple of coats of Daisy by Dixie Belle mixed 50/50 with Cotton:

Then, I pulled out this cutie pie Fairyland Transfer from Belles and Whistles by Dixie Belle:

A little extra detailing with some Cotton:

And this makeover was complete!

As you can see, I added stripes arount the outer edge…

And here’s a peek at the transfer:

So fun, right??

I realy loved using this yellow!

Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Makeover #8
The thing about neighborhood sales is many people just throw a few things out in their driveways. Often, items aren’t priced, and although there are lots of places to stop, it’s not the same as when people decide to have a yard sale because they NEED to have a sale. Those are the yard sales I want to find, and find one, I did!
I came across this one just before noon when they were getting ready to close up shop.
The girl told me to make her an offer because the DAV truck was picking up what was left.
I went straight to this beauty:

I asked how much and she said…wait for it…$5 dollars!! Gulp. For real?????
Yes she did! She said she found it on the side of the road with the drawers scattered everywhere, and it had been sitting in her garage ever since. She had planned to redo it but never did, and so she has passed that torch to me, and I gladly accepted!
This thing needed help though, y’all.

The drawers don’t slide in and out very smoothly, and none of the drawer bottoms are attached properly.
I got right to fixing all the wonky parts!
But the biggest issue was that it smelled SO musty! I took care of that by coating the entire inside cavity in Bonding BOSS in the clear formula:

That took care of the odor and I was ready to move on to the rest. It needed mud, sanding and so much more before I could get to the fun part, paint!
I gave it two coats of Dixie Belle’s Caviar:

Let’s jump to the after of this one!

Ahhh so much better!

Two of the pulls were missing, so it needed new hardware which I found on Amazon, but I decided to add new backplates using the SOHO Fusion Mould from Redesign, made with Amazing Casting Resin:

They add so much!

Big Mama’s Butta hydrated the parts that I sanded to give it new life…

I was so honored to get to save this one!

See all the details of this makeover HERE.
Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Makeover #9
And what about the mirror??
I wasn’t sure if the mirror was clear enough to salvage…

So it became something else entirely!
I opted to remove the mirror altogether.
In it’s place I used a piece of thin plywood that I cut to fit, painted white, and then decoupaged with this gorgeous Angelic Rose Garden decoupage paper using Decoupage Gel in Matte and 2″ Foam brush:

The rest of the mirror frame was primed for bleed through (as old oak likes to do), and then painted in Fluff:

That is actually a piece of wood being painted because I decided to add a shelf to this frame!
Here is how this old mirror looks now:

So light and fresh!

This would be a sweet addition to any space now!

This one is still actually for sale in my booth!
See the entire redo, including how I added the shelf to the frame HERE.
Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Makeover #10
And finally, at the same yard sale, she also had this desk. Also incredibly, only $5:

This one looks pretty good, right?
Nope.
It was pretty gross.

And beat to heck.

There are few things I love more than a good trash-to-treasure makeover though, so I was excited to love this piece back to life!!
And that is what I did!!
It got a ton of filling and sanding to take care of all those imperfections:

I wanted to use this pretty Champs de Lavende transfer, so to get the perfect purple, I mixed two colors to get exactly what I wanted, using about 2/3 Lucky Lavender and 1/3 Secret Path:

Mixing colors to get exactly what you want is always an option!

For the top and for the drawers, I once again used one of my favorite stains, Voodoo Gel Stain in White Magic:

The more coats you add, the lighter it gets.
Here is the transfer going on…

And I used this Decor Poly piece from Redesign called Luxe Ornamenta on the drawer:

Let’s see how it all came together!

This was one of my favorite makeovers last year, but I think that is because it came so far!

All the elements came together so nicely!

And a peek at one of the drawers. They were all stained in the Voodoo Gel Stain in White Magic as well and the bottoms were painted in Weeping Willow:

I skipped lots of details on this one, but you can see them HERE.
I redid this bench and mirror to match not long after:

See how the whole set looks now HERE!
I hope you enjoyed this look back at this Trash-to-Treasure Yard Sale Haul!

I still cannot get over five dollars for those two dressers! Such great makeovers. I enjoyed revisiting them. Unbelievable that mirror turned shelf still hasn’t sold. Have a great week Christy! xo
Christy says
Right?? Now that is my kind of deal lol! And yes, I am surprised as well, but it has sold me several of those papers! Thanks, Jackie! XOXO
Mary Kaiser says
So fun to look back! You have made over some things that no one else would have touched, and you do amazing work on them every time!! It is so fun to see your creativity and visons come to life and breathe new life into things that would have ended up in a landfill somewhere!
Christy says
I’m so glad you enjoyed them, thank you! Those destitute pieces are often my favorites to work on since you can’t really mess them up ha ha. Hope your week is off to a great start, my friend! XOXO
Nana Diana says
WOW and WOW! Some really fantastic makeovers! I thought that little yellow child’s chair turned out so cute-and odd the lady said that-like she knew you were going to do a make-over on it. lol
When you say you add the piping around the edges of the fabric do you staple that on first and then set the recovered seat on top of it? In the past, I always hot glued the piping in place after the recovered seat was affixed. Just curious. I have a couple of small benches I need to redo.
Have a wonderful rest of the week! Diana
Christy says
Thank you, Diana! I thought that was funny about that little chair too…how did she know? As for the piping, if I add traditional piping, I would add that to the bottom of the recovered seat first either with staples or hot glue and then afix the seat to the base. I used double welt trim here, and I added that at the end. Enjoy your week too! XOXO
Cecilia says
So much fun to see these again. I would have bought the shelf in spite of the bad paint because of its size. It would fit perfectly in my breakfast area. And I’m a glutton for punishment, although I hate stripping old paint. I’m so glad you rescue pieces. As you have proved over and over, they still have lots of life left!
????Cecilia
Christy says
I’m so glad you enjoyed them, Cecilia! That shelf was a great size…it could tuck into any corner of the house very easily! I too am a glutton for punishment apparently, but it’s worth it in the end lol! Thank you, my friend! XOXO
Colleen says
I always look forward to seeing all your makeovers. You do such an amazing job! I get so many great ideas for my own projects. I love seeing your choices for paint, knobs, transfers, and any other embellishments.
Christy says
Aww that means so much, Colleen, thank you! I’m so happy to hear they give you ideas for your own projects! XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
SUCH CREATIVITY! m MY FAVORITE IS THE BOOKSHELF! I WOULD SNATCH IT UP RIGHT AWAY! PERFECT COLORS. YOU ARE SUCH AN ARTIST!
Christy says
Aww you are the sweetest, Rose, thank you, my friend! XOXOXO
Lizzy says
These are so good! My favorite is #3, the small gray/white bench. I would pick that up in a second.
Christy says
Thank you, Lizzy!! That could function in so many places in the house! XOXO
Catherine Cave says
O M Gosh!!! They are ALL my favorites!!! I can’t pick one…but I’ll pick my top two…the bench and the shelves! Everything is gorgeous! Thanks again for the inspiration!
Christy says
That is a great response! Thank you so much, Catherine! Those were good ones! I loved this bunch too! XOXO
