Hello beautiful friends! Welcome back! Today I am excited to be sharing the final piece of my Post-Shutdown Thrift Store Haul!! It feels so good to have another load of goodies completed.
Today’s makeover is this silver tray I picked up for $2.25:
I actually found this one before the big shut-down, and it had been marked down. I love clearance at the thrift store!
What I really loved about this tray though is that it had these cute little feet:
Sold! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Before I could paint this tray, I gave the top a good sanding with 220 grit sandpaper to give the metal surface some grip. Then I spray-primed with Rustoleum spray primer. Most things do not need to be primed, but it is a good idea when painting metal. I let it dry for at least a day.
Then I decided to use a pretty new custom color I mixed that I tried on a piece in my last smalls post on this metal basket:
This custom color mix is:
- 25% The Gulf
- 25% Vintage Duck Egg Blue
- 50% Cotton
I absolutely love Sea Glass. However, it is just a tad on the green side, so I was looking for something in same tone but more blue.
I had originally mixed half The Gulf and half Vintage Duck Egg and that gave me a deeper shade that I used in the bottom of this sweet box:
Adding Cotton gave me just the color I was looking for!
I kept the handles and the underside in Cotton and decided it needed something on the top, so I reached for this simple wreath stencil that I still had out from the picnic basket I used it on in my other recent smalls post:
I like to use spray adhesive to hold the stencil in place to help give me nice clean lines. I use craft paint and a small brush to fill in the stencil.
Then I go back with a liner brush and fill in the breaks that give it away as a stencil. I also attached the leaves to the wreath on this one:
You can see more on how I add stencils in this video if you like:
If you have trouble viewing, find it on YouTube HERE.
I sanded lightly and sealed with Dixie Belle’s Best Dang Wax in clear.
This would be perfect on a vanity holding toiletries or on a dresser holding perfumes!
I love the detailed handles these trays have…
And of course, the sweet feet that this one has!
It could also be cute on a desk holding all those office essentials!
This was a pretty simple makeover, but here’s what else I’ve been working on:
Always hustling ha ha! These will be heading to my booth hopefully today. You can see how I make chalkboards in an oldie post HERE.
And that is another round done!
If you missed any, you can see what became of them all at the links below:

I still have three pieces left from my Mother’s Day Haul, but I have been shopping for a new haul of smaller (and not so small) items, so I’ll be back on Thursday to share what I found!
UPDATE: See what’s in my brand new haul HERE now!
I’m hoping to be moving Jack into his dorm this weekend, but I’ll be back on Tuesday to share the first of those projects. Then I’ll see y’all back here next Thursday with my Furniture Fixer Upper friends where I’ll be sharing one of my Mother’s Day Haul items!
Have a fantastic day!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!

The customer color is very fresh and the tray looks beautiful. Forgive me if you’ve told us before, but could you share where those lovely glass bathroom cannisters came from.
Christy says
Thank you, Susan! I found those canisters at either TJ Maxx or HomeGoods! XOXO
Susan Cox says
Thanks. And of course by “customer” I meant “custom.” Darn auto-fill!
Christy says
Sure thing! And ha ha…that darned auto-fill! XOXO

Oh my gosh it is beautiful. I have that exactly tray, and I have that exact stencil! I ordered the stencil since you use it so much on so many projects and every time you use it I love it. I have my own now, and that exact tray, so I know what I will be doing this weekend!! Thanks for the inspiration!!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! Ha ha… funny that you have both! Have fun!! XOXO
Denise Cox says
Cute as a button!! And I like that you chose to use two colors as it adds more dimension to a much smaller item!!

Thank you, Denise! XOXO

Christy, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tray like that with feet. It turned out beautifully. Love the handles, underside and feet are white/cotton. Beautiful stencil. 🙂 If it is going in your booth, I know it won’t last.
Same with the great chalkboards. Did you turn some of the white boards to chalkboards?
In any case, have fun and create on!!
xo
Christy says
Thank you, Christina! I love the feet on it too! I’ve only seen one more like it. I did not redo the white boards as I thought maybe they would sell to be used at home with schooling? However, as of now, they still sit lol! XOXO

Prayers for your young man!

Thank you, Elizabeth! XOXO

Hi. A while back you mentioned that you have a certain rub on transfer you like. Can you share the brand please?
Christy says
Hi Christine! You are probably referring the mini transfers that I have been using a lot of lately? They are by Redesign with Prima and they are called “Classic Vintage Labels”. If you do a search on Etsy, you can find several sellers that have them. 🙂
Laura says
Is the silver tray makeover water resistant enough to be used in the bathroom? I have a similar tray in the bathroom that really needs a makeover.
Christy says
Hi Laura! If you sealed it with Gator Hide which is water repellent, it would probably do fine! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
These trays were a statement “back in the day” and everyone who is celebrating a golden anniversary probably has one in the attic! I have a couple of them and they are black, so you know how much use they get. However, with that beautiful color of paint, I know I will be starting a new trend with my golden girlfriends! Do you think I need to polish it a bit first? Maybe just a good washing! Thanks again for the great inspiration!
Christy says
That explains why there are a lot of them at the thrift store these days! Yes, go start that trend! I doubt it needs polishing first, just a good wipe down! XOXO

Wishing you a stress free college drop off.
I know it can be an emotional time, especially
for Moms. So exciting and scary at the same
time. Good luck.

Christy, I can’t wait to see your new haul on Thursday and see what creative ways you find to transform it all.
Christy says
It was tough this time, but I found a few goodies! See ya Thursday! XOXO
Sherry Stuifbergen says
I love your blog. I never tire of what you find and fix up. Sometimes, I would leave things unpainted since I am an antique lover, but you put YOUR stamp on things and do such a good job. I love when you and friend go thrifting. I am right there, scanning shelves w/you. You two really know how to ham it up, have a good time. That is fun to see most of all.
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Sherry! I appreciate that! I miss thrifting with Nancy…maybe we’ll have to do a video with our masks on lol! XOXO
Mary Loveland says
The tray is lovely! Take heart this weekend when you take your son to school; remember, it’s a new chapter for him and you also! Plus, you might get him back with the covid thing!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I appreciate the words of wisdom, and right? Very likely! XOXO
MARGARET HORN says
Hello Christy, Your work is so inspirational! My daughter and I went thrifting and bought an armoire, bar stools and a bath cabinet. We plan on using some of your techniques that WE LOVE on them! Question: If a shelf has a thick sealant in plastic over it and cannot be sanded, how do you get it to take new paint? I have tried to rough it up, but no joy there! I cannot figure out how to re-paint without it chipping or scratching off?
Thanks Christy,
Margaret
Christy says
Thank you so much, Margaret! Sounds like you found quite a haul! Dixie Belle makes a product called Slick Stick that you can paint on first. It is for surfaces just like that! XOXO
vicki says
Oh the silver tray turned out so nice. I also am drawn to trays with the detailed handles. Thank you for taking the time to share. Have a bless day.
Christy says
Thank you, Vicki! Yes, these silver trays especially have the prettiest handles! You have a blessed day too! XOXO
Jackie C says
Love this and your custom color. The website to order the stencil (thank you for the link!) is 30% off until the end of the month! Whoop!
xoxo
Christy says
Thank you, Jackie! And woot woot! I may need to go take a look around! XOXO
Robin says
Beautiful! Would you ever use Slick Stick as a first coat?
Christy says
Thanks, Robin! This would be a perfect application for Slick Stick! I don’t have any at the house, so I used what I had, but absolutely! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy! I always love your tray makeovers. I like that you used the cotton for the bottom and handles. Great idea. I have so many smalls and furniture I need to paint and remake but my heart is not into it right now. I hope I can snap out of this ugh. You are a great inspiration.
Christy says
Thank you Cheryl! Maybe pull a few smaller pieces out and give them a quick coat of paint? Accomplishing just a few small things will do wonders for your creative juices! Also, I think of your daughter every time I hear from you. I hope she is hanging in there. Much love. XOXO
Sue Mellette says
Absolutely gorgeous! I love the transformation. I have a couple of old trays that need some TLC. I have not gotten the nerve yet to paint, but I am definitely leaning that way after seeing the trays you have transformed. Thanks for sharing all your tips and suggestions. I also enjoyed “the virtual trip down memory lane” in your shop. You have amazing talent, and it is so much fun to see what you have done and then how quickly some of those items sell! I imagine it is quite a feat to keep your shop filled with so many goodies!!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Sue! You know I love to share and I am so glad you enjoyed the booth tour! It’s always fun for me to look back also. And yes, it keeps me busy lol! XOXO

Jeanne says
Hi Christie,
Perhaps you’ve sold this tray but I was hoping to see it finished without something on it. I have a similar one I’ve been wondering what to do with and came across your post. Did I miss it?
Christy says
Hi Jeanne! I have sold this long ago, I’m afraid, and I searched through my photos to see if perhaps I had taken a photo without anything on it and I had not. I used the same stencil as I used on this little tote: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/simple-tote-update/ if you want to see what the stencil looks like on something. I also redid a silver tray with stripes here:https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/silver-tray-makeover/ Hope this helps! XOXO
