Hello, amazing friends, and welcome to another round of Furniture Fixer Uppers where I and four of my favorite creators get together to share furniture flips! Today, I’m sharing a painted dressing table and chair set. Be on the look out for my friends projects after at the bottom!
I’ll ALSO be back in your inboxes around 11:00 am with all the BRAND NEW Redesign merchandise for Q3!! More on that at the bottom as well!
Let’s get to it!
Here is how this dressing table and chair looked when I found it at the DAV thrift store:

It was originally marked $49 but had been reduced to just $34.93:

SOLD! They’re calling it a desk and chair, but with the addition of a mirror, it can easily be a dressing table too, and the large drawer lends itself to that purpose very well, so that’s what I’m going with.
This set did have some issues. The finish came right off with the tape when I removed the tag, and you can see that something had been dragged across the top and left several scratches:

The chair had its own issues which you’ll see in a bit.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Painted Dressing table and Chair
Sand
Since the tape had pulled away some of the finish, I needed to sand that smooth.
I did that next using my Ryobi circular sander and 100 grit sandpaper, followed by 220 grit:

I was hoping I could sand out those gouges as well, but alas, they were too deep.
Clean
I then gave both pieces a good cleaning using White Lightning that I mixed into a half gallon of warm water. Using a terrycloth sponge, I got to work!

That’s when I discovered how scratched up the seat of the chair was…

I tried to capture it in the glare, but it was across the whole seat. How??
Back to sanding
Back to sanding I went to smooth out all those scratches. These foam pads really helped! They go between your sander and your sandpaper to soften the sanding surface, helping it maneuver over curves more easily, and this seat had a bit of a curve to it:

Fill gouges
Next, I filled the gouges on the table top that I wasn’t quite able to sand away, with Dixie Mud filler:

I sanded those areas once they were dry, gave it a good vacuum, and then wiped away any remaining dust with a clean cloth.
Prime for Bleed
If I didn’t have to sand the surfaces, I would have cleaned and gone straight to painting. That is one of the beautiful things about working with chalk mineral paint!
However, because I had to sand and broke that seal, there was a good chance the tannins would bleed through my paint.
To combat that, I applied one coat of Bonding Boss in the white (also available in clear and gray):

Bonding BOSS has no odor and is water based, so clean-up is so easy!
Be sure to wait 24 HOURS to allow it to do its thing before painting!
Paint
I had plans to add a transfer to the top of this dressing table, so I used my chalk mineral paint fan deck to help me choose a color. I landed on Pink Champagne:

It seems like it’s been a minute since I use this color, and I just love this lovely, soft pink!
You can see what a great base the Bonding BOSS is as the pink is going on so well here…

Both the chair and the table got two coats…

Adding a stripe…
I wanted a bit of whimsy as the base for the transfer, and my favorite way to do that is with a stripe, which I added in Cotton, two coats, removing the Frogtape as soon as that second coat went on:

See how I easily measure out the stripes HERE.
Sand
Once the paint was dry, I sanded all over with a fine grit sanding sponge::

I didn’t want any distressing and these are great for that. I sanded the chair as well, and you can see that the seat also got the stripe treatment:

Transfer time!
Now it’s time to really add some pretty! Redesign’s last release included this gorgeous Blush Harmony transfer:

It comes in four sheets that all combine to make one large image:

Instead of having one solid seam in between pieces, they now try to separate the sheets so that the breaks in the design are where natural breaks would be in the image, making it nearly impossible to detect any seams.
I decided I just wanted to use the two top sheets, but I would need to cut the bottom of each one straight across, so they would line up with the bottom edge of the table:
I laid the design where I wanted and started burnishing using the enclosed tool:

See more details on applying a transfer HERE.
Once I had the images transferred, I used a burnishing pad to lightly go over the image to be sure it was adhered well all over.

I usually just do this with larger transfers that have much larger pieces.
Seal
Finally, it was time to seal this painted dressing table and chair! I chose to seal with my favorite Clear Coat in the satin finish using the blue sponge to apply it:

I like to cut my sponge flat on at least on side for easier handling and application. I did the chair the same way…

Everything got two coats. I will likely go back and add a coat of the new satin Gator Hide just on the top of the dressing table for additional protection since this piece may be a hard worker.
(If you are using transfer, always apply Clear Coat before Gator Hide if you need the super durable protection it provides as Gator Hide alone can cause transfers to lift. )
Painted Dressing Table and Chair Reveal
All in all this makeover wasn’t too bad, aside from the intense heat of my garage, but I think it was worth all that sweat!

So soft and lovely!

I added stripes to the drawer front as well…

And you can see I added a little something to the back of the chair as well:

But let’s see that top! first, a peek…

I love this Blush Harmony transfer so much!

And the stripes make for such a pretty backdrop!

The Drawer
The drawer was the saddest part before:

I ended up sanding the inside and then applying Bonding BOSS to that as well. Then, it was painted in the same Pink Champagne, inside and out. I followed that up with just a splash of the transfer to one corner…

I loved the original glass knobs and chose to reuse those.

I did add a bit of antique gold Gilding Wax to the center posts…

This turned into such a sweet piece!

Don’t you think?

Now to find a mirror so I can actually make it a dressing table set!

Lorri Rauscher says
Christy..you always make the drawers so cute.. Love this…I can see it in a little girls room… Christy… I have a suitcase that I painted in DB Cotton many years ago..I needs to be painted again but I put wax on it because there is another suitcase on top of it.. what do I do… thank you in advance for your answer.
Christy says
Thank you, Lorri! Did you use Dixie Belle’s wax or an oil-based wax? (Oil based waxes are very stinky.) If it was DB’s wax which is water-based, you can just paint right over it. If it is an oil-based wax, you would need to remove that with some mineral spirits first and then you can repaint! XOXO
Marcie says
It is adorable now, Christy! I’m surprised you didn’t have a mirror somewhere in the garage 😁 I bet you find one soon so you can get these two sold.
