I am so glad you’re here, sweet friends! Today’s makeover involves two upcycled bread boards from the thrift store! I don’t know if these are exactly bread boards, but I believe they are…you can correct me if I’m wrong!
That larger one may just be a cutting board? It was $2.99 and half off of that…bargain!! And the other one was $2.99.
When I was on the hunt for my current haul, I tried to find items that could become other things. When I saw these pieces, they were like blank canvases. I found them on the same day, but at different thrift stores.
Clean
The first thing I did was give both boards a good cleaning with White lightning. It comes in both a pre-mixed spray and a concentrated form which is what I like to use since I prefer to mix a fresh batch for each project. I added one TBSP to a half gallon of warm water, gave it a good stir, and got to work…
Be sure to give your pieces another wipe down with clean water to remove any residue.
Paint
I was able to go straight to painting and chose Dixie Belle’s Cotton as the base for both pieces:
Sand
Next, I sanded both pieces smooth and distressed a bit with 220 grit sandpaper…
I have a TON of leftover transfer pieces, so I wanted to use some of them up here.
For the smaller of the two, I found this piece from a discontinued lavender transfer set that fit perfectly:
I had a bit of a fail with this one…we’ll see if you notice what it is in the reveal lol.
For the other one, I pulled out the leftover pieces I had from the Mystic Hydrangea transfer and laid out a few pieces…
Seal
When I had them both the way I wanted, I sealed with Clear Coat in the Satin finish using the blue sponge to apply it:

First, let’s remember how the first one started:
Likely a cutting board now that I look at it more, it was only $1.50!!
Here is how it looks now!
My hubby asked what the star of the show was supposed to be.
I thought it was obvious, but when I told him, he said he didn’t think I would set up such an elaborate display for that tiny piece ha ha. Does he not know me??
As you can see, I added hooks…boy I just love adding hooks to stuff, don’t I?
Now it’s a cute piece that can function in a new way, holding necklaces, keys, lanyards, or leashes…
Of course you can tell it was once a bread board (cutting board?), but that’s what makes it so fun and unique!
Here’s a peek without the things in the way..I love how the seams are more pronounced with the distressing on this one.
(The butterfly did not come as part of this set…I believe it came from an old set, but there is a butterfly transfer set HERE.)

Thrift Store Bread Board #2

I don’t know what kind of mini loaf this is supposed to hold…oh maybe it is for cheese?? Ha ha…what if neither of these are actually bread boards?

This one just got that singular lavender transfer, and I thought that was enough…
It of course could lay on a table holding things, but I imagined it as hanging decor on a small wall space somewhere or as part of a vignette.
Do you see my faux-pas on this one?
I realized once I hung it that this image is likely a bunch of lavender hanging to dry and probably should have been applied in the opposite direction. If so…oopsie!
It’s still pretty though!
It was nice to be able to use up some of those leftover transfer pieces!
And as always, it was wonderful to be able to cross something off the list!

I am not sure if they are cutting boards or bread boards, but I know that they turned out so beautiful! I doesn’t matter that the lavendar got put on upside down, it is still beautiful! Honestly if you would have not told me I would not have noticed. It is beautiful! Your husband is funny, after all your beautiful staging over the years he should know better! LOL

Christy, love the way you repurposed those boards. You do love your hooks and they do add so much versatility! BTW, your lavender is exactly right. If it was meant to be lavender hanging to dry, the bow would be tied the other way! LOL ..

Pretty! I like to think the lavender bunch is tied into a sweet bouquet so being upright is just fine. 😊 I’d say that one may be a cheese board but the other one could be a bread board. But you would cut bread on it so a bread cutting board, lol. It seems a bit big for a regular cutting board so I’m with you – it’s a bread board. Ok, I’m up too early and my brain is still fuzzy. Both look great and hooks are always useful!

I don’t think you transfered the lavendar bunch upside down, look at the bow, it is in correct position with tails hanging down. I think this one was a bread board. The first one was a cutting board or server of some sort.

wow. I really love these. I have passed up so many because while I love vintage cutting boards, I never feel like they would ever come clean to really be put to use. It never occurred to me to do something like this. UGH!
I didn’t view your first piece as a faux pas at all b/c of the bow. It would’ve looked dumb to turn it the other way with the bow upside down. To me, it makes me think of a little bouquet.
Really looking forward to see what you do with that cool desk next week!

Hi Christie, If you hung the lavender piece correctly. If you went the other way then the bow would be upside down with the tails hanging straight up. I think that would question the laws of gravity lol.
