Hello, lovelies!! Thank you so much for all the love on my last piece, the very needy Apothecary Empire Dresser! After spending way too many hours on that one, I chose an easier one for today! I’m sharing an unfinished wood table makeover that started out like this:
This is a table left over from our craft market days from almost 20 years ago!
(Remember I made dolls? See them HERE!) My dad used to build lots of wood items, including these tables, and my mom painted them. They sold a ton! He had two of these tables left that had been just sitting in our garage on top of the huge pine armoire I recently redid HERE. (That sold already, BTW woohoo!)
I finally decided to assemble one and add it to this haul!
They are so easy to paint up!
Sand Unfinished Wood Table
I always sand unfinished pieces first to smooth them out, so this one got sanded with 220 grit sandpaper:
Fill holes
There were several tiny nail gun holes that needed to be filled, and I did that with Dixie Mud:
After sanding them smooth once they were dry, I was able to go straight to painting!
Paint
For this piece, I wanted a dark color since there were a few knots in the legs, and using a dark color would allow me to skip the priming step. (Remember, I was looking for an easy makeover!)
I chose In the Navy by Dixie Belle:
Sand to smooth
I gave it two coats and then sanded lightly all over to smooth using a fine grit sanding sponge:
This fine grit sanding sponge is perfect if you don’t want any distressing.
I wiped away any sanding dust with a clean cloth, and I was on to the next step!
Adding a transfer
I still had some of the Chirping Charm transfer left from this console makeover I did this winter, so I pulled out what I had left to decide what to do with it:
Unlike the first table I used it on, I decided to cover the entire top on this one and set about burnishing it to the surface using the included tool:
I had to fill in some areas where I had used parts of this transfer, but that is the great thing about transfers…you can cut them and use them any way you like!
Seal
Once I had the transfer applied the way I wanted, I sealed with Clear Coat in the satin finish.
For darker pieces, I like to add a bit of the paint to the Clear Coat as it gives a nicer end result and helps prevent the “ghosting effect” you get when you run your finger over the surface…
I applied it using the blue sponge applicator:
I applied two coats.

This transfer is so pretty over the Navy:
I did go over it with a burnishing pad to reduce the halo that shows a bit on darker surfaces, but sealing will minimize that also.
I had contemplated other blues when I first used this transfer back in February:
But the darker blue won out!
The Drawer
This was just a tiny drawer, and the top was so busy, that I kept the inside of the drawer simple by painting it in Silk Bay Breeze:
And the finishing touch was this simple gold pull from Hobby Lobby:
I loved a quick makeover this time, and this table was FREE, the best!
It’s amazing what paint and a pretty transfer can do!
That’s piece number two complete!!

At 1st glance – I thought it was side table height.
And, not the white / beachy look that I was expecting….
The deep blue looks amazing with the transfers.
The long legs give it an elegant statement.
Love the single simple round gold knob. Perfect touch.
I agree – dark pieces can be a beautiful ‘add’ with light furnishings.

Hi Christy, another beautiful job and so quickly with the unfinished table you had. 😊 Question for you: I have a table about that size, a barely twist leg, maybe antique, and the top has leftover black spray paint splotches on it from long ago. A friend spray painted a chandelier for me and set it on the uncovered table! Ugh! So, I want to fix the top, so should I sand lightly with 220, then paint it and add a nice transfer? I have your paint & transfer sitting here begging to be used! Ha! Your thoughts? 🧐
