Hello, sweet friends! It’s Trashy Treasures Tuesday and we’ve added a new member to our group! If you don’t already follow Kathy from Petticoat Junktion, you’ve likely seen her furniture makeovers in our Furniture Fixer Upper group every month right here, and she is now joining in our Trashy Treasures fun! Her makeover for today as well as Nancy’s and Denise’s are waiting for you at the bottom!

My contribution this month is this night table that I picked up for $10.99 at the thrift store:

Wow, what a great piece in fantastic condition, right??
WRONG! Here ya go…

That one leg shot tells you so much about the condition of this piece, especially the chewed off knob lol.
It’s the perfect trashy piece for today’s makeover!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Clean
As always, I started with a thorough cleaning with my go-to paint prep cleaner, White Lightning, mixing one TBSP into a half gallon of warm water.

These terrycloth pads work fantastically for this job. Once it was clean, I swapped out my water for clean water and gave everything another once over to rinse. White Lightning is a degreaser and a deglosser and gloves are recommended.
Fill the Imperfections with Dixie Mud
Next, I filled in all the blemishes, including this chewed up leg, with Dixie Mud:

I would normally use the brown Mud on this piece, but I used up the last of it recently and just used this instead of opening a new jar. It worked just the same! (Translation: I was too lazy to go inside and grab a new jar ha ha.)

This is what that leg looked like after sanding with 220 grit sandpaper:

I ended up lightly sanding this night table all over since the finish was a bit flaky…

After a good vacuum and wipe down with a clean cloth to remove any remaining sanding dust, we were ready for paint!
Paint
I kept imagining this one in Caviar, so I stuck with that. And just for those of you who wondered if I paint the backs of my furniture pieces, I usually do!

Especially when they look like this.
And you can see in the background that I tape off my drawers with FrogTape to keep a nice, clean edge. I like to make the parts you don’t see out in the open nice too as clearly someone failed to do here…

I gave everything two coats of the Caviar.
Sand to smooth
Seal
To seal, I used Clear Coat in Satin, applying that with the blue sponge applicator.
I did add just a touch of paint to the Clear Coat which gives a nicer overall finish and helps to prevent the “ghosting” effect you get on dark pieces when running your finger across the surface…

I couldn’t leave well enough alone!
As I was looking at it after applying the first coat of sealer (I usually do two coats), I just couldn’t stop myself from adding more lol.
I decided to fancy it up a bit and pulled out this new Eglantine Elegance gold foil transfer:

I used the enclosed burnishing tool to burnish it to the surface. These gold foil transfers adhere really easily!

And as you can see, I cut them apart at the seams with an exacto knife to make them easier to apply.
I have yet to seal over the top of the transfer since I added it last minute, but I will do that before I take it to my booth. The second coat makes the finish so lovely!
$10 Night Table Makeover Reveal
Here is how this trashy treasure looks now!

I used all of this transfer, and it was just the perfect size for this night table!

I replaced the original wooden knobs with these prettier ones…

I didn’t want to take away from the design, so I used solid black. The knobs on the top drawer are from Amazon HERE, and I found the others at Hobby Lobby.
They kind of disappear here but are much more noticeable in person.

The Drawers
The drawers weren’t the cleanest before…

I hate to imagine someone putting clothes in that no matter how much I clean it.
So, after a good cleaning with White Lightning, I chose to paint them in this beautiful Bay Breeze blue from the Silk line…

Fresh and clean now!
I love using Silk in the drawers. They were unfinished wood, so there was no need to prep with sanding or Bonding BOSS as would normally be needed for Silk paint, and it has a built-in topcoat!

You can see the hardware better from this angle too…

A sophisticated new look for this simple piece!

I hope you enjoyed it!

It’s stunning, Christy. I love the insides too. Not sure about the sides – they seem so bright and stark – I’d have preferred the caviar there too – but when closed who cares, haha. Really gorgeous piece.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Michele! We were getting ready for a snow storm that day, so it was so incredibly dark when I was taking these photos. I had to really brighten them up which is why the sides appear so bright lol! They are much better in person! XOXO
