Hello, lovelies! Thank you to those of you who stopped by my Halloween tour on Thursday! I know it’s not my regular content, but I just love it, and I love sharing it with you! Today, I have a round wooden storage box makeover from my new haul!
Here is this storage box as I found it for $5.99 at the thrift store:

One Small Fix
The only real issue it had besides being outdated, was this split on the back:

I thought this was fabric at first, but it is actually vinyl. I was able to fix that with a little hot glue to flatten it out.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Clean
Then, I gave this super dusty box a good wipe down with White Lightning, mixing just a half TBSP into a quart of warm water for this small project.

Paint
I went straight to painting with a coat of Dixie Belle’s brightest white, Cotton:

Unfortunately, I got a couple of areas of yellow that came through the white:

Prime
If this were a piece of furniture, I would have applied Bonding BOSS which would have knocked that out, but for this small project, I chose instead to give the whole box a coat of Rustoleum Flat White Primer, hoping that would take care of it:

I had planned to only leave the straps and wooden band around the top and bottom white and cover the rest, so this actually looked pretty done to me!
Sand
I sanded all over to distress using 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around and old sanding sponge:

Seal
I then sealed those areas with Best Dang Wax in clear, applying it with a clean cloth and removing the excess with a clean cloth also…

I left the patterned areas unsealed.
Adding Decoupage Paper
I knew I wanted to add either fabric or decoupage paper to the panels, and after digging through my fabrics and perusing my decoupage papers, I finally decided on this gorgeous Soft Veil Decoupage Paper from Redesign:

The papers from this line come with one larger 19.5” X 30” sheet and one bonus 11.7” X 16.5” sheet in a similar, but smaller scale pattern. (My other two favorites in this line are Rosy Reverie and My Garden Whimsy!)
Redesign with Prima decoupage papers are often limited run only, so these papers may not be available if you are viewing this makeover long after the posting date. See all the decoupage papers I have in stock HERE.
I started by cutting the pieces to fit the panels around the box using my rotary cutting mat set to get nice, straight cuts:

Next, I applied a layer of Redesign’s Decoupage Gel in the matte finish using a 2″ Foam n Dandy brush:

Then, I laid the paper in place and used a piece of saran wrap to rub across the surface to smooth out the paper:

The saran wrap glides nicely over the paper. The decoupage gel is quite tacky, so I like to wear gloves when applying it.
Once I had the paper laid out, I added another coat of Decoupage Gel over the top to seal:

Let’s see how this box turned out, shall we?
Round Wooden Storage Box Makeover reveal
Much better!

So much softer…

This paper is so pretty!

I had planned to add more on the top, but I liked the pattern that showed through when painting it, so I kept that as is:

The papered areas almost look like textured paper with that pattern underneath…

And of course I love the distressing with it!

The inside
The inside got a pop of color to match!

Here it was before…just a dark hole:

I painted it in two coats of Morning Sunrise Silk Mineral Paint:

It dries to this lovely muted purple:

It took me a minute to decide what to do with this box because there are just so many possibilities! I had been wanting to use this paper on something, so this was the perfect piece!

I hope you enjoyed it!
