Hello, sweet friends! I’ve got a wooden tray makeover for y’all today using some scrap wood slats I saved from a crate. But first, congratulations to Jessica N, Rowena N, and Kelly C!! They were the winners of my Spring Etsy Shop giveaway. They have been notified and have already responded! Thank you so much to everyone who entered!
Okay, let’s get to it!
I found this beautiful wood tray at the thrift store for only $4.99:

It took me so long to get to this one because it is beautiful as it is. I considered just putting it in my booth like this. However, it would have stuck out like a sore thumb, and although it is lovely as is, there is really nothing unique about it. You can probably walk into Target right now and buy one just like it.
So at nearly the end of this humongous haul, I set out to redo it!
Seriously, here is how this haul started, just as a reminder!

Clean
This tray had become quite dusty hanging around the garage the last several months, so I started with a good cleaning with my favorite deglosser and degreaser, White Lightning.
I mixed one TBSP with a half gallon of warm water and got busy…

These terrycloth applicator pads are perfect for this step!
Before I get to the paint part, I had this crate thingy that a wreath I purchased came in:

I took it apart and saved all the slats…

I knew I wanted to add something to the bottom of this tray with wood pieces like I did HERE and HERE.
So I cut these to fit the bottom:

Then, I filled the larger holes on a few of them with Dixie Mud:

Paint
Now for paint!!
I painted the base of the tray in this coastal-inspired custom blue made by combining about 40% The Gulf, 40% Duck Egg Blue, and 20% Cotton to lighten it a little. (Essentially, half Gulf, half Duck Egg, and a good splat of Cotton.)
I then alternated the slats with that and Fluff:

Sand
I sanded them all over to smooth and distress.
Seal
I then sealed with Clear Coat in Satin using the blue sponge applicator:

I used liquid nails to secure the slats in place…

Wooden Tray Makeover After
Here is how this tray looks now!

Remember these??

They were so sad before, but they were free to me! See them before HERE.
I set them in the corner of our kitchen after photographing them, and that is where they’ve lived ever since!
Here’s a closer look at the inside of this tray:

And without all the things…

I love when I can photograph in my real world!

If you’re new here, that is our living room in the background. I rarely share our home because I hardly ever change the decor lol. You can see more of our home HERE though!
With warmer weather here, I am definitely feeling the summer vibes, and this tray goes right along with that!

I hope you enjoyed this fun, summery makeover today!
One piece closer to being done!

Oh it is so fresh and beautiful now! It looks so pretty on your table in your home! That will sell in five minutes from your booth. I love the slats in the bottom, especially the stripes. What a great makeover!

Thank you so much, my friend! I almost want to keep it where it is on our table, but my boys would get irritated having to move it all the time lol! XOXO

Christy, a perfect summer-vibe makeover! If I counted accurately, you only have 8 goodies left in your current haul….this was a big one for sure; loved seeing every one of your creations and always look forward to seeing what you create next.
P.S. loved the glimpse of your living room….I say, if you love it, keep it. When I love a room redo, it takes me forever to change it LOL.
Christy says
Thank you so much, my friend! I can’t believe I am almost done with this one finally lol. I think because I am always redoing things to share, I have no desire to change up my decor ha ha. XOXO

Christy, I was looking for some table/bench top inspo and came across your sister’s kitchen table and whole-kitchen makeover ; I don’t know how I missed it. It is absolutely gorgeous!!! Anyone new to your creative talents and exceptional guidance, suggestions and instructions would benefit greatly from seeing those makeovers. They encompass so many facets of makeovers/renovations that can be applied to most makeovers! You are amazing!
Christy says
Aww you are the best, Janice, thank you! Her kitchen still looks fantastic. It was SO dated before! I should reshare that one the next time I need to pull something from the archives! XOXO
Geri Davis says
Oh I love the slates, looks so coastal, not sure it would sell out here in the middle of the country, but we do live on a lake….hmmm
Thank you for sharing! I love how I’m not the only one who saves things like that crate!
Christy says
Thank you, Geri! This would be prefect in a lake home! And yes, you are my people ha ha.. I save it all too! XOXO
