Welcome back, beautiful friends! Thank you so much for all the love on my expanded booth space!! I have a charming estate sale toolbox makeover to share with you today, AND I am so excited to reveal SEVEN BRAND NEW Chalk Mineral Paint colors from Dixie Belle!
I used one of them on today’s toolbox makeover!
I’ll show the box, then the colors, and then try to guess which color I used, okay?
Also, be on the lookout for more new releases at the bottom!
First, here is the toolbox as I found it:
Pretty rough! It was marked $12, but everything was half off, so I paid $6 for it.
And here are the seven BRAND NEW colors from the new Southern Roots Collection:
I can’t tell you how excited I am to have new colors to play with!!

This box was quite primitive, especially the handle:
It looked as though it had been roughly carved to get that curve, leaving it very rough and splintery.
I considered just sanding the sides of it to smooth it out, but ultimately, I decided to replace it altogether…
Before going any further, I sanded any rough areas and then filled in any gouges and rough areas that couldn’t be sanded smooth, using Dixie Mud:
Once it was dry, I sanded once again using my mini Ryobi Cat Sander. ( I have the cordless one that uses the Ryobi batteries, but there is a corded version also HERE.) I used 220 grit sandpaper.
A New Handle
I found a few of these outdoor spindles a couple of years ago at a yard sale for super cheap, and I knew one would make a great new handle for this box:
I cut it to fit with my miter saw, and attached it using my Ryobi nail gun:
I filled the holes from the Nail Gun with Dixie Mud and sanded to smooth once again using my mini Ryobi Cat Sander:
Paint
Finally, the good part!
What color did I go with??
I chose Olive Wood!
Did you guess correctly? I love this soft green!
This one might be my favorite of the collection!
Sand
Once I had it painted in two coats, I sanded all over to smooth using a fine grit sanding sponge since I didn’t want any distressing on this one:
After wiping away any dust, I pulled out one of my favorite transfers that Redesign decided to bring back, Pastels Artistry!!
We also got the Maxi version back in as well!
I used this pattern HERE, HERE and HERE.
This transfer coordinates beautifully with Olive Wood:
Seal
I sealed inside and out using Clear Coat in the satin finish, and this estate sale toolbox makeover was complete!
Much better, right??
I’m loving the charm that the new spindle handle adds..
I just whitewashed that by painting it in Cotton white and wiping it back off with a rag…
That was all the embellishment this box needed!

Hi Christy. I love seeing all the wonderful makeovers you do saving these amazing pieces you find. Unfortunately, I felt a terrible sadness when you removed that beautiful antique handle from the toolbox. That handle made the toolbox! I can imagine how many hands touched it and carried it around creating things.

Thank you, Denise! I actually got a splinter from the handle, so I wasn’t feeling too kindly towards it lol. It was also nailed in place from the top, so any real weight added to it could have caused the handle to pull right off. I’m glad the rest of the box gets to shine again though! XOXO

LOVE it! Yes, that color is wonderful. Not at all like the picture, which looks more yellowish. I’m biased, with green being my favorite color. I knew you were gonna take the handle off ????Love the new one. I thought maybe you would go with the blue, even though you have been branching out from blues. I need one of these for dog toys. I really want to see how ‘Thicket’ and ‘Blue Grass’ look when used.

I thought you’d go with Thicket. The olive sample looks yellowish on my screen but not when you showed it in the jar or on your piece. ????????♀️ It’s gorgeous btw. Love the transfer and spindle handle – gives it that extra pizzazz. I really like all the new colors! Hmmm, I wonder which one you’ll try next?

Christie, I had guessed Blue Grass since I’m from Kentucky! LOL. But the one you used is perfect with the flowers. Also, I wondered why you didn’t paint the handle the same color, but I should not have doubted your taste! The whitewashed handle pulls out the white in the floral design. You always amaze me!

I LOVE THE TOOLBOX COLOR, BUT NOT THE HANDLE. It should be the same color as the box. To me, it looks cheapened.

No, the original handle looked like it would be uncomfortable when carrying the tote (even if you could sand out the splinters!). Good call taking it off! (P.S. I think the Olive Wood color is perfect with the transfer!)

I did like the shape of the original handle, but the white washed spindle looks great.
A nice wash of white makes the tranfer the star.

Thank you, P! I was surprised that I liked this color so much. I do usually gravitate towards the whites…you know me well! If the original handle wasn’t so rough, I would have considered keeping it, but the spindle does work too. I didn’t use the gilding wax on the frames, but I have a round of smalls coming next week, and I did use it one of those pieces! It is a lovely warm gold! XOXO

Christy, gorgeous as always. If anyone can turn a very hefty, rough box into something lovely, it’s you! I thought you would choose Briar Patch or the blue; I agree with others, the olive appears more yellow but on the box it looks olive and is a nice shade. Love the transfer you added – it’s one of my favorites. Every piece I’ve used it on has sold right away. Ha, I should order more. You are knocking out thus huge haul…

Thanks so much, Janice! I think the blue will likely be the next one I try from this bunch. I love that as well, and yes, this is a lovely soft olive color with no yellows. This is one of my favorite transfers as well. I love that it adds a splash of floral but it is still neutral. Everything I’ve used it with has sold also! I started this haul in October, and I’m finally seeing the light at the end lol! XOXO

Hi Christy – I was wrong on my guess. I thought you would paint the tool box in Blue Grass. After seeing Olive Wood on it, you made the perfect choice (no surprise there). ???? The transfer goes so well with it. I really like the replacement handle you chose. It dresses it up so it’s perfect!! Love ALL the new colors. What a charmer this became! I’m not criticizing, but I really loved the original handle also. I always think of the people who made it, used it and how many hands prospered by it. I wish there would have been a way to save it, but I totally understand that splinters are no fun and especially so if they get passed on to a customer.
I love the transfer, and I was spot on when I thought you would use the olive wood. Must say, I might have chosen the thicket, but you were right!

At least the rest got to get a new lease on life! I’m so excited we just got that transfer back in…it is perfect with this new color! I do love Thicket as well though. SO fun to have new colors to play with! XOXO

I absolutely LOVE that color. I actually squealed when I saw you use it. Yes, it does look yellowy like an olive on the DB color sample chart but more a sage green on the piece – did you alter the colors while lightening up for posting by chance? Those new colors are really really great. I sure hope green starts selling better – it is soooo having a comback (and for me never left) so you always feel confident using greens. But you already knew that about me, didn’t you????? ♥♥♥ The only critique I have is that I wish you’d have painted the handle green too. But love it. Love boxes like that.

That toolbox design looks just like the ones my son’s Cub Scout den made many years ago. I’m not sure I’m ready to paint over his yet….(he chose four primary colors!) but I now have an idea what to do with it when I am 🙂

Love that tool caddy. I have a short one (unfinished & due for a make-over) but it has been put into use filled with spice jars. Waiting for the cabinet maker to add 3 shelves inside the cabinet door to hold them. Meanwhile, most everything has been coralled.
