Hello, dear friends! I’m back with that flatware chest makeover that I promised!
But first, I wanted to announce the winners of my birthday giveaway! Congratulations to Susie W, Christy M, Donna P, Virginia T, and Ginny. All winners have been notified and have responded. Thank you to everyone who entered! If you did not win this round, I will likely have another giveaway for my blogiversary in November.
Lets get to that flatware chest makeover!
Here it is before:

It was only $4.99 at the thrift store, and I love this style since it has a drawer.
Here is how the inside looked before:

Vavavavoom with that red velvet! My assistant, Jack, removed the lining for me on this one…

Ooh what’s that in the background…

I am loving my new minivan! Who knew??
I did have to scrape away some really bumpy parts that were left behind to get a somewhat smooth bottom and a razor blade scraper made that part easier:

Clean
Removing those linings is really the toughest part of these flatware chest makeovers.
Once I had it good enough, I cleaned well with White Lightning, mixing one TBSP with a half gallon of warm water and using an applicator pad to wipe down the box:

Then I wiped it down once more with clean water to rinse. Gloves are recommended for this step.
Paint
Next step, paint!
I chose this lovely Pastels Artistry Maxi transfer to use on this piece and decided on Sawmill Gravy as a base:

Blend
I wanted a highlight in the center of the top for the background of this transfer, and to do that, I gave my freshly painted surface a spray with my mister bottle:

Then, I added a bit of Fluff with my Best Dang Brush to the center and began working it into the Sawmill Gravy, swirling my brush as I went to blend it in:

I added a bit more Sawmill Gravy around the edge and then continued to blend until I got a look I was happy with.

I didn’t want to distress this piece, so I used one of these sanding sponges to smooth out the surface all over:

Chalk paint has a slight texture to it, so sanding it lightly after will make it buttery smooth.
Adding the transfer
This transfer has lots of pieces that you can place any way you like…

I absolutely love this transfer! Redesign has been releasing new designs every quarter, but many of them are limited edition, so once they’re gone, they’re gone unfortunately. I hope they choose to bring this one back!
I started to arrange them how I wanted them on the top:

I continued to add pieces until I got the look I wanted. I often place mine coming down from a corner like this rather than centering them…
Seal
Once I had the transfers applied, I used Clear Coat in Satin to seal, applying it with the blue sponge applicator.
Flatware Chest Makeover, The Big Reveal
Here is how this chest looks now!

So light and airy compared to the before…

I decided to add some of the transfer to the front as well…

And the top…

The blending added a soft highlight to the background.

The inside
Here is a reminder of what the inside looked like before:

And here is what it looks like now:

Lining these boxes isn’t too hard at all. If you have an iron and a glue gun, you are all set!
Here you can see I just cut a piece to go around the perimeter and then ironed the top edge over before gluing it in place:

Then, I glued a piece of foam core covered in fabric, to the bottom:

See more details on how to line a box with fabric HERE.

I also replaced the handle with this one that I saved from another piece:

I painted it in Cotton and shabbied it up a bit.

Sawmill Gravy is such a pretty neutral!

I hope y’all enjoyed this one since I made you wait ha ha!
That is another piece closer to being done with this haul!

I love me a mini van! My 17 year old granddaughter is driving an old blue mini van for her senior year. She need to go to different schools for different classes. Since her grandfather is Dutch we said the van should be christened
“Van Go”! Don’t know if she will carry through❤️.
I love the transformation of this silverware box. I need to put this on my TD list.
