Hello, sweet friends! Today, I have the cutest painted vintage step table makeover to share with you! I don’t traditionally love this style of table, but I happened upon this one for $12.99 at the thrift store and there was just something I liked about it:

I really liked the lines of it and it had an awesome large and deep drawer that could store all sorts of things!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Clean
This vintage step table makeover started out like any other furniture makeover, with a good cleaning with White Lightning. I like the concentrated powder version, mixing one TBSP with a half gallon of warm water.
A terry cloth applicator pad is perfect for this step:

(I really try hard not to point out how dirty the water is in every post, but just a reminder that your pieces aren’t as clean as you think they are!)
Prime
Next, while I had my Bonding BOSS out from priming this cool game table, I hit this piece too:

It is an older piece that may possibly bleed through, so I primed it just in case. Except, I was kind of ignoring these spots where the stain was wearing…

I knew to prep this piece properly that I needed to sand those areas smooth before I could continue, so that is what I did next using my orbital sander and 100 grit sandpaper, then 220 grit sandpaper:

I sanded until the surface felt smooth to the touch when I closed my eyes. Now I can move on with a clear conscience lol!
Then, another coat of Bonding BOSS. I let that sit for 24 hours. Adequate dry time is essential to its success!
Paint
Finally, the fun part…paint! I knew I wanted to paint this piece a fun color. I went for one of my all time favorite custom color mixes using these three colors:

I used 40% The Gulf, 40% Vintage Duck Egg Blue, and 20% Cotton:

Don’t overthink it….it’s basically half The Gulf, half Vintage Duck Egg, and a good splat of Cotton to lighten it a bit.
The result is a gorgeous, soft coastal blue that I just love!

I really need to name it because I’ve used it often like HERE and HERE. I would paint everything this color if I could!
Sand
I gave it two coats and then sanded to smooth with 220 grit sandpaper:

I also hit the edges to let some of the White Bonding BOSS show through for more coastal cottage charm.
Seal
Since it will likely act as an end table and may take some heavy use, including holding drinks, I decided to seal with Gator Hide since it is water repellent. I did that using a blue applicator sponge:

As you can see, I like to cut the sides of my sponge straight for easier application.
The Reveal of this cutie pie painted vintage step table
Here is how she turned out:

So cute, right??

Evidently, I’m envisioning it in a bathroom here? I don’t have room for this in mine, but it would be a sweet addition to any room!
And how about that pretty detail on the drawer??

This is the Majestic Flourish Mould from Redesign. I poured it using Amazing Casting Resin:

It is SO simple to use and sets up in just 10 minutes!
I painted and sealed it before attaching it with this glue.

I did have to drill a hole in it for my knob first. I chose this one because it covered the original hardware holes!

You can see in that photo above that this table had outlets on the interior and a hole at the back for a cord to come through.
It looked like the cord had been cut to these outlets, but I left them because they are a fun, vintage detail!

I loved this trim detail…

And also these florets on the sides:

And also the legs…all the sweetest details on this one!

The inside of the drawer just had one area that was blemished, so I decided to cover that with this pretty Patina Flourish decoupage paper:

To get perfectly straight cuts every time, I use my rotary cutting mat set.
I painted a coat of Bonding BOSS first, just because I already had it out and wanted a light background for the paper:

After letting it dry thoroughly, I applied the paper to the bottom of the drawer with Redesign’s Matte Decoupage Gel.
After applying the paper, I followed up with another coat to seal.

It matches the table perfectly!

Did you enjoy this fun makeover??

I did enjoy this makeover, but I enjoy every make over you do!! I think this piece turned out amazing, as does every thing you touch! I love that the paper in the drawer ties in with the color on the outside! I would love the storage of that drawer, I have so much stuff!! LOL! Looking forward to seeing what you do to that big dresser on Thursday!

Beautiful, as always, Christy! These old, brown, blah looking pieces (I just bought one) really are brought back to life with fresh colors. This one would be great in a bathroom, as you said, or bed room to stow away all sorts of things. Great save!
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! It is really amazing what a little color can do for sure! This would be lovely in a bedroom also. Enjoy the rest of your week, my friend! XOXO
Lorri says
Very pretty Christy… I always love how you embellish your pieces… If it has a drawer so eager to see how you made it look pretty. Lets say.. you didnt disappoint me..lol.. that tissue paper looks so nice inside the drawer.

Aww thank you, Lorri! Those extra details are fun for me too! XOXO
Cecilia says
Funny, I didn’t notice the hole in the back until you pointed it out. For a telephone cord perhaps? Anyway, it is so cute with its “Coastal Vibe” color. Great makeover.

Christy says
Oh yes, maybe it was for a telephone cord? Good call! I knew I wanted to give this one a fun color. Thank you, Cecilia! XOXO

I don’t know what attracted you to that hulking Early American side table, Christy, and I can hardly believe how different it looks! The color is beautiful, the paper lining and handle detail are exactly what it needed. No more eyesore, it’s going to be charming in someone’s house now.
Christy says
Ha ha, right? I don’t normally love this style of table at all, but something about this one I liked. Glad I grabbed it! Thank you, Marcie! XOXO
Cyndi says
This turned out beautifully. Now those decorative features really show up, and I love that mould piece that you added. Great idea to cover the original pull holes! This table was okay before, but now it’s something you really want to look at!
Christy says
Thank you, Cyndi! It had some sweet details to begin with, but the pretty color really brought them out! XOXO

When are you going to collect all of these awesome makeovers into a book?!? You are so creative & such a great writer. You could even have a whole chapter at the end explaining how you’ve turned your skills into a business. So many people would love to do what you’re doing but don’t know how to get started. You could have a whole chapter on refinishing mistakes & pitfalls and how you’ve overcome them. I’d buy that book in a heartbeat! I can just see you on The Today Show teaching Hoda Kotb how to decoupage the inside of a drawer!
Christy says
Aww you are the sweetest, Cyndy, thank you so much!! How cool would it be to have a book? Maybe one day! XOXO
Sue McCombs says

Christy says
Thanks so much, Michele! Coastal is definitely my favorite! XOXO
Debra Hubbs says
I happen to love old tables like this once made over and yours is perfect as always. The mold adds so much as does the drawer lining. So many ways this table can be used. I have a question for you and may msg you on FB.
Christy says
Thank you, Debra! I don’t usually see them with storage and I think that is mainly what drew me to this one. So glad I picked it up! XOXO
Cletia says

Robin says
Man, you’re really banging them out, Christy! LOL. I would’ve passed on this piece if it didn’t have that trim & rosette.
Christy says
I sure am lol! I’m trying to fill up that big ole booth! I hesitated on this one a bit, but I’m so happy I decided to bring it home. XOXO
Robin says
There are so many of that style of table out there EXCEPT that they don’t have those cute legs or the gadroon (rope) edge. Gives it personality!
Christy says
Right? I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one with a big ole drawer like that either…bonus! XOXO
Donna Duffy says
