Hello, lovelies, and thanks for joining us for Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday! My friends have four more fantastic trashy makeovers at the bottom, so be sure to check them out! My trashy project for today is a metallic vintage end table that started out like this:
It doesn’t look too bad until you see it up close:
Pretty trashed! That is likely why I got this table for a steal at only $5.99!!!
Of course, I loaded it right up!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Sand
The first order of business was to sand the top to smooth it out. I did that using my Ryobi rotary sander, followed by my corner cat sander for the corners:
I started with 100 grit sandpaper and finished with 220 grit sandpaper.
Vacuum
Then I vacuumed away the sanding dust with my shop vac using a brush attachment:
Clean
To get any remaining sanding dust and prep the rest of the table, I cleaned with White Lightning using a terrycloth applicator pad:
(Mix one TBSP into a half gallon of warm water, and then be sure to rinse with clean water after. Gloves recommended. )
One look at that water and you know this will be a bleeder!
This finally gave me the opportunity to try the new BONDING BOSS!! I chose the white formula and gave it just one coat:
You can see that I immediately got some yellowing coming through, but I only gave it ONE coat!
This is something I wanted to test because although it was recommended to apply two coats of the original BOSS, I rarely did more than one, and it still worked incredibly to block out bleed-through.
Did the new Bonding BOSS pass the test?
Yes!! I allowed it to dry for about 18 hours. (Proper dry time is KEY!)
Then, I applied one coat of Driftwood…
And here it is once it dried:
It completely blocked any bleeding! (Painting a white piece will be next!!)
Painting with Metallics
I planned to use my favorite Moonshine Metallic, Steel Magnolia. The metallics go on a bit sheer, so it is a good idea to start with a similar chalk paint color. You could also use French Linen.
The metallics reflect light, but the overhead light I was under just makes the color look like a flat brown here lol.
The Moonshine Metallics are self-sealing, so two coats and that was it!
The After
Here is how this steal of a deal looks now:
I love the soft, subtle tone of this metallic.
This color reflects light in such a beautiful way that can be difficult to see until you’re up close:
Here’s a bit more of the top…
The lines of this table are so elegant that I wanted a soft, elegant look to match.
I swapped out the pull for this more ornate one:
It was brass and I just gave it a quick coat of the metallic to bring it into the same color family.
The drawer
Inside the drawer was in good condition, but I always like to add a little something extra there to pretty it up.
I started with a coat of Bonding BOSS followed by a coat of Fluff:
That is so I would have a nice, bright backdrop for…
Decoupage paper!!
How to Apply Decoupage Paper
I started carrying a ton more decoupage papers in my shop in the Fall, and there are so many pretty ones to choose from!
This Meadow View Farm decoupage paper is a new one that we just got in, and I loved it with this metallic:
See all the decoupage papers available in my shop HERE.
I first cut it to fit using my rotary cutting set:
To apply it, I used Redesign’s Matte Decoupage Gel this time:
I applied it in small sections so it wouldn’t dry too quickly, applying it with a Foam n Dandy sponge brush:
These brushes are available in three sizes and are awesome! This is the 2″ one which worked well.
I added the paper to the area I had applied the gel, and then used my transfer tool to smooth out any bubbles/ wrinkles:
This works awesome for this purpose! You can use a credit card or a plastic scraper also.
Then I added more gel…
and so on.
Once I had the paper added and it was all smoothed out, I applied another coat of the Decoupage Gel over the paper:
That was it! It dries matte and clear.
These particular papers are great because they have more of a mesh/fabric feel which makes them less likely to tear and any bubbles are able to easily escape.
They sure do dress up this little drawer!
I like that this piece still had all four wheels…
I hit the pieces that are holding them with a quick coat of the Steel Magnolia also just to tint them to blend with the table.
I’m so excited to call my first piece of this haul done!!
Simple, yet elegant for a simple, elegant table!
The Moonshine Metallics are available in eight shimmery colors:
Don’t forget to check out what my friends are sharing today!
My first piece crossed off, many to go!!
See everything in my new haul HERE including what each item cost!
As always, I was tempted to add a transfer to this table, but because I have a ton of furniture in my booth, I need it to sell quickly, so I wanted to keep it more simple.
But if you want to see what it could have looked like, check out this makeover:
See it HERE now!
I’ll be back with the number one requested item next…this shoeshine box:
See ya with it on Thursday!
UPDATE! No need to wait…see what I did with it now HERE!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!

I love the neutral of that table with the subtle metallic sheen! A modern, beautifully updated version of an old table!
And just a heads up on the sample sticks of metallics – not sure if it’s your samples, but having grown up in the Caribbean, I have to mention that it has 2 “b’s” and 1 “r” – named after the Carib indians who inhabited the area before the colonizers pretty much wiped them out.
Have a great week, Christy!
Christy says
Thank you, Janina! You are the best…so glad you are looking out for me lol! I fixed that graphic right up! I appreciate that! XOXO

Beautiful table!! Do you sand after you paint? It is so smooth looking!
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! I do not sand the metallics after. The secret is a good brush and a light hand on your final pass. 🙂 XOXO

It’s so elegant and timeless. I realllly love it !
And the decoupage paper is a perfect touch for this piece.
Adding that surprise to the drawers is always so fun.
I’m thinking the Gold digger, and the Deep woods could also be stunning !
I look forward to seeing you use them.
I can’t wait to see the Shoeshine Box !!!

I’ve loved everything you’ve painted in Steel Magnolia. The new drawer pull is absolutely perfect for this table and I’m glad you kept the whole piece one color and resisted adding anything else. It’s lovely and so recognizably Christy.

Christy says
Thanks so much, Debra! XOXO
Vicki says
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for testing the bonding boss with one coat. Also, glad to know you carry decoupage papers, I didn’t know they made papers with mesh that dried better without bubbles! Lining the drawers and adding gorgeous hardware really takes pieces to the next level!
Christy says
Thank you, Vicki! You’re welcome! I am all for less work lol. The one coat still stopped the bleed through, and now I am testing if one coat provides the adhesion properties just as well. Will report back! I am so glad I added decoupage papers to my shop. Redesign has so many beautiful designs to choose from…it really makes it so fun to create! XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
Lovely little table. You rescued it from becoming destroyed.
Christy says
Thank you! I’m so glad they donated it rather than put it out for the trash so I could nab it lol! XOXO
cheryl atkinson says
Hi Christy! I love how this table turned out. I have always wanted to try the metallics. Someday. That decoupage paper is pretty. I may have to order some. Thank you for sharing!
Christy says
Hi Cheryl! I need to try the other metallics, but I keep coming back to this one! Thank you! XOXO
Cyndi says
This is so gorgeous! I like the Steel Magnolias over Driftwood. (I’ve seen it done over DB’s Mud Puddle too for a similar look. I guess it depends on how deep a color you want in the end.) And I was happy to read your review of the decoupage paper. Sounds good!
Christy says
I’m glad you enjoyed this one! Thank you! I just love this beautiful metallic. You can use it over French Linen also…lots of options! And yes, these decoupage papers are really easy to work with! XOXO
