Hello, beautiful friends, and welcome back to another edition of Trashy Treasures Tuesday where my friends and I all bring you trashy makeovers! Today, I’m bringing a painted vintage side table that I scored for only $5 at a yard sale! Be on the lookout for what my friends are bringing to the party at the bottom.

Let’s get to it!

Here is how this little vintage side table started:

Pretty trashy! It might even be an antique, but I called it vintage to be safe.

I found this table last fall while yard saling, but it didn’t make it into my Fabulous 50 Fall Haul back in October because I was using it in my dining room Halloween display at the time mwah ha ha!

When I was assessing what I have left in my haul that was pretty trashy, this was better than anything else!

The veneer was literally popping right off, and it was missing most of the tiny corner details that you can see on the front view:

But for $5, I was game to take it on!

Remove the loose veneer

I ended up whacking off the rest of the corner details and used a multitool to remove the rest of the veneer, which luckily, came right off:

Clean

A thorough cleaning was in order next, and I did that with my go-to paint prep cleaner, White Lightning. I mix a fresh batch for each makeover, mixing 1 tablespoon into a half gallon of warm water.

White Lightning is a degreaser and a deglosser and gloves are recommended. These terry cloth sponges are perfect for this job. It looks like this may have belonged to a heavy smoker at one time:

I knew I would need to prime this table with Bonding BOSS to be safe.

Sand

Before we could get to that though, I sanded around the band where I had removed the veneer:

That yellow I got when cleaning is likely cigarette smoke stains, although it has no smell. It’s never a bad idea to start with a coat of Bonding BOSS to be safe:

And if it DID have an odor, Bonding BOSS is an odor blocker as well!

To Use: Apply ONE coat and then wait 24 hours for it to fully do its thing.

Paint

Next, it was time to paint!

Remember when I chose Tea Rose for the last little side table I redid to match it to the dresser I had just completed before that:

They did not sell together though. The table sold right away and the dresser sold a few days later to a different buyer.

Well, I decided to redo this little side table to match the armoire I shared on Thursday!

That meant a coat of Gardenia from Dixie Belle:

Here is how it compares to the rest of the Dixie Belle whites:

It covered amazingly well in one coat, but I did give it two.

Sand

Once it was completely dry, I sanded all over to smooth and hit the edges a bit more to distress a little just like I did on the armoire.

Seal

Then I sealed all over, using Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in the satin finish, applying it with the blue sponge applicator.

Adding a touch of white

I painted the armoire in a two-tone look using Gardenia and Cotton, and so to bring in some white on this piece, I decided to add a decorative piece using the Josephine Redesign decor mould:

My favorite medium for casting these decorative pieces is Amazing Casting Resin. One kit will do lots of pieces, and it so user friendly!

I painted it in the Cotton, of course, and then used the cheat distress method to make it appear that it had been wood underneath to match the table:

This is Chocolate by Dixie Belle, but I often use Coffee Bean for this also.

I spray sealed the resin piece with clear satin spray from Rustoleum to make it easy and then attached it using Titebond Quick and Thick glue:

Simple and sweet!

And it is a perfect match to the armoire I shared on Thursday!

Adding this small embellishment to the front was just enough to tie everything together!

I love the charming raised piece along the back of this table…

You don’t see details like that on newer pieces.

 

Now maybe these two will sell together? Or maybe they won’t, but at least they’ll look pretty together in my booth!
