Hello, lovelies! I have an unexpected makeover for y’all today! I promised a round of smalls, but I realized that the new Silk Mineral Paint Countryside Collection would be releasing just before this post, and I really wanted to show them off! What better way than to use one of them on a makeover today? I’m doing just that on a vintage side table redo from my booth that was in need of ANOTHER redo!
This vintage side table redo started out like this when I originally found it for the bargain price of only $5.99:

That was in February of last year, and it has just been sitting in my booth with no takers, so I brought it home to give it a redo.
When I saw that we were getting seven brand new Silk Mineral Paint colors, I knew I wanted to use one of them on this table.
New Silk Mineral Paint Countryside Collection

Prepping for Silk Mineral Paint
Silk does require some prep, and you have two options.
- The first option is to scuff sand well with 220 grit sandpaper to give the surface some grip. You do not need to sand to bare wood, just enough to remove any sheen.
- The second option is to prime with Bonding BOSS which is an adhesion primer as well as a stain blocking primer. (No sanding required with this option.)
Sand
I decided to sand since I already had a painted surface. I did that with 220 grit sandpaper:
The original finish was one of the Moonshine Metallics which are a bit shiny, so I just wanted to give the surface some grip.
After cleaning away the sanding dust, I was ready to paint!
Paint
For this piece I chose Oxford Fog!
Did you guess correctly?
It looks green in the jar but almost appears to be more of a gray blue when it dries. And that photo is after just ONE coat! I did give it two though.
Be sure the first coat is completely dry before applying a second since Silk dries from the top down. It may appear dry on the top when it’s not beneath. It is suggested to wait two hours between coats, but it was so hot out that I went ahead with my second coat in about an hour.
No Sealer Required
Once the final coat of paint goes on, that’s it!
Silk Mineral Paint has a built-in topcoat that dries to an eggshell sheen, so no additional topcoat is needed. It’s between a flat and satin.
You can add a topcoat though if you want a different sheen or just additional protection.
Use with care for about the first three weeks while it fully cures.

The Drawer
In the original makeover, I lined the drawer in this pretty Meadow View Farm decoupage paper:
Instead of removing it, I decided to paint over it in the Oxford Fog and chose a different decoupage paper, this gorgeous Mystic Blue Florals paper:

This is such a fun surprise when you open the drawer!
Silk is the perfect option when you want a clean, sleek look without any distressing.
And the eggshell sheen is so soft and lovely!

I was right, I guessed Oxford Fog!!! I love that color, I think it reads green, but in different light could see where it would look more blue! I LOVE the second makeover way better, and love the paper you changed to in the drawer! Bet it will sell fast now!

Christy, woohoo! I saw the Oxford Fog and that was my first guess; Elderflower was my backup. I think you chose the perfect color — you always do. It does have green-blue hues which makes it perfect for a soft coastal vibe option other than white. It’s a great option, as well, for grey, when you want a more sophisticated grey. I bet it doesn’t sit in your booth very long this time! Keep us posted…..

Lovely. So I will be curious to how quickly it sells with just that tiny hint of hue change to me. I do like it more this color, but I also think that if I were in your shop and had to pick just one piece to purchase, I would pick a fancier piece… I think in my mind I would say, I can do that (paint Oxford fog).
Okay question. I have a living room with a black painted low chest of drawers, that the white primer is starting to show through (probably the first thing I ever painted black 20 years ago and only had white primer). I have very nice book cases that are painted white. I have a fireplace and I have two pieces that are not refinished but need to be. (one is a nesting end table and the other a second but different style, low chest of drawers). How do I decide what color to paint?

Thanks, Debbie! You make a great point! There are some people that just don’t want to paint something themselves though, so I’m hoping it gets snatched up now! Deciding what color to paint is a tough one. Pieces that are built in like bookcases and fireplaces I think should match all the moulding and trim, probably a clean white. Painting all the furniture the same color will unify it, but you can have fun with the furniture pieces if you like. It really depends on your style and personal preference, so I can’t help much more than that. Best of luck deciding! XOXO

Haha, I guessed right! It is a pretty color. Blue? Green? Yes! More on the blue side though. Reminds me of a bird egg shell I found once. Highlands or Wicklow Glen might be my favorite color but Oxford Fog is a close contender! I think the table looked pretty before but I like the new version/color. And that paper! ❤️

I love it! Steel Magnolias is a favorite of mine, but it seems to me this table looks better with a “simpler” paint, if that makes sense. Either way, it’s pretty!

Question about Silk Paint….can you use a transfer over it and if so, any special directions? Thanks in advance!

You know how I like my whites lol! I was excited to try this one though. Yes, you can use a transfer over the Silk, so special prep needed. However, while Silk doesn’t normally require a topcoat, you would want to seal at least the areas with the transfer to protect it. Christy!!!! Oh how i have missed you. I love this new color. It reminds me of Vintage Duck egg a little. Definitely like the second makeover better. I saw a picture of candlesticks painted in Truffle with gold and it looked so pretty. You know i stopped painting furniture but I held on to a few pieces that I do want to paint so I may have to try one of these new colors.
