Welcome to this month’s edition of Furniture Fixer Uppers, amazing friends! I have a good one today. I’m sharing the prettiest antique dresser makeover!
When I first spied this dresser at the thrift store back in the fall, I wasn’t sure if it was hideous or gorgeous, but what I did know is that I have never seen anything like it before:
I reached out to y’all on Facebook to get your opinion and overwhelmingly, you said yes! $75 later, it was in my car on its way home with me!
I honesty love it. You just don’t see detail like that anymore!
Of course, it wouldn’t be a fixer upper unless it had some issues, so let’s dive in!

All the issues
What I noticed first is that this dresser was missing this very detailed trim on one of the drawers:
Obviously, I could never find more trim to replace that, so I knew I had to deal with that somehow.
The center drawer was much darker than the others, and it was also missing this trim:
There was a mish mash of hardware as well:
And there were a ton of areas where this antique dresser had been banged around over the years, including both corners:
Other than that, this dresser was solid, and I was excited for the chance to bring it back to life!
Addressing the missing trim
Before anything else, I started with the missing detailed trim issue. This piece from the other side was coming off, so I pulled it off all the way…
I had two choices:
- Remove all of this very detailed trim OR
- I could try and replicate it
You know I am always up for a challenge, so I set out to attempt to replicate it!
Replicating missing trim
I used Crayola air-dry clay for this. (My friend, Nancy from Artsy Chicks Rule just shared a how-to for making DIY air dry clay HERE.)
I spread some out and pressed the piece of trim I had removed from the dresser into it:
Clearly, I am not a professional lol! (I think I was supposed to add a little corn starch so the clay wouldn’t be so sticky, but I didn’t.)
I knew if I let it dry completely, I may not be able to get that very detailed piece of trim out of there, so I left it for about an hour and then gently removed the piece of trim.
Now I had a mould in which I could pour my Amazing Casting Resin into to try to replicate this missing piece…
You could also probably allow the clay mould to dry completely and then use that as a mould with the clay. I had resin on hand and it dries in less than 15 minutes, so that was much easier. The clay was still very pliable once my resin was dry, so I was able to remove it easily.
After sanding it some to smooth it out, here is how it turned out:
Not too bad, right?? The real test would come once it was painted!
Clean
This piece, like most antiques, was so in need of a good cleaning! I mixed a TBSP White Lightning into a half gallon of warm water and got to work!
It’s been a while since I shared my dirty was so there you go! I swapped that out for clean water and gave everything another good wipe down inside and out. These terrycloth applicator pads work great for this, like a sponge covered in a washrag, and they can be tossed in the wash.
Fill in Dings and scratches
The areas around the pulls on the drawer had worn away over time from the original hardware. I filled those areas and a few dings with Dixie Mud which is a hole and scratch filler. I sanded with 220 grit sandpaper once it was completely dry:
Replacing the rest of the missing trim
The other missing trim piece was much easier to replace than the more detailed trim since it was just a straight piece.
I decided to replace it all and headed to Home Depot while my Dixie Mud was drying to find something that would work and got lucky with this:
It was at least the same width as the original.
I used my miter saw to cut all the pieces, using the originals that I had pried off as guides…
Then, I used wood glue to secure the new trim and let it sit with my spring clamps until it was dry:
Prime with Bonding BOSS for Possible Bleed Through
I’ve learned my lesson when it comes to antique dressers. Their stain just loves to bleed through.
To prevent that, I gave both the dresser exterior and the drawers a coat of Bonding BOSS in clear:
I didn’t want any of this to come through from the drawers:
The drawers were pretty gross.
(Luckily, the inside didn’t smell at all, but I would have coated the entire interior with this as well if it had as it will also take care of any musty odors.)
I let the Bonding BOSS dry for 24 hours and I was finally ready for paint!
Paint
What color did I choose??
This was such a hard decision!
I was originally thinking neutrals like French Linen and Magnolia, but I really wanted to lean feminine with this one and chose Tea Rose instead:
I applied it with my favorite Mini Angle brush and then went back with a tiny brush to get into the details I couldn’t reach:
It took two coats for solid coverage.
And how did the detailed piece I replicated with clay and resin turn out?
Not perfect, but not bad…
I added a bit of Dixie Mud in white to the seam there to fill it in better:
Then, it was time to decide where to go next!
- Do I add a transfer?
- Do I add decoupage paper?
- Highlight some areas with a coordinating color?
So many choices!
In the end, I went with what I love, stripes!
This is a 50/50 mix of Fluff and Tea Rose that I still had mixed from this child’s desk I shared a couple of years ago. And this is the 1.41″ size of FrogTape for Delicate Surfaces, my go-to tape for paint projects.
The drawers
The drawers looked dirty and old, especially with many areas of spilled stain on them. I shared this photo earlier:
That’s why I started with a coat of Bonding BOSS on them also, inside and out.
I usually get fancy with the drawers, but this piece had so much fancy already, I just went with a simple paint job to make them fresh and clean, using the same Fluff/Tea Rose mix I used on the stripes:
Painting them seemed to take forever because they are very large! Everything got two coats.
Sand to Smooth
Sanding everything with a fine-grit sanding sponge was next. These are what I use when I don’t want to distress the piece I’m working on….it just smooths out the finish beautifully…
Seal
And finally, it was time to seal this pretty lady!
I used Clear Coat in satin, applying it with a blue sponge applicator that I cut straight across on one side so I could get right up against the straight edges:
After a couple of hours, I applied a second coat, and this piece was complete!
The Prettiest Antique Dresser Makeover Reveal
Here is how this $75 thrift store find looks now:
One thing I had planned to do from the beginning was to highlight all the details with Gold Gilding Wax. However, once I was done, there is so much detail on this dresser already, that I didn’t think it needed it!
What you do think?
I did use Gold Gilding wax on the hardware. I used a combination of Hobby Lobby pulls and a couple of the originals:
Gilding wax worked wonders on them and made them all cohesive:
I especially loved these original pulls, and just look at those details on that drawer!
Can you tell where I replicated the fancy trim?

I’m amazed at how well that worked out! I asked Jack to point to where I replaced it, and he couldn’t tell!
And the trim I replaced with Home Depot trim worked out nicely as well:
There were so many possibilities for what I could do with that center area, but I’m glad that I kept it simple. I think it lets all the detailed trim be part of the main focus.

I kept the drawers simple also, just giving them a fresh coat of paint.
If I had enough of the Timeless Blooms decoupage paper, I would have added that to the drawers. Unfortunately, I only have one left and Redesign is currently out too.
But at least they look nice now…I couldn’t imagine putting clothes in them in their before state.
I sure hope someone comes along who will love it for many years to come!

I absolutely LOVE this piece! When you said you were adding stripes, I cringed. I didn’t see how it would go with the detail, but the stripes are just enough to add a little more interest without competing with all the beautiful wood details. WOW Christy, that is one GORGEOUS piece. I wasn’t sure if I would love the pink but you knocked it out of the park as usual. The stripes are very much in-keeping with the style of furniture and it really was the perfect choice. I think any gold highlighting would have been too much – always admire your ability to not overdo things. I don’t have that gift lol. All of your choices on this piece were perfect. No guilding was good choice. The details on this piece are amazing.
Wow. It IS huge! Great storage for sure. Love the knobs you picked.
I also was leary of the stripes – but it did give just the right detail that doesn’t diminish those beautiful carved details.
Other options would have been too much.

It’s very pretty and can tell you spent a ton of time on this one. I would have loved a slightly lighter or darker, using the same ‘pink’, where you have the stripes. I feel like the wide stripes competes with and takes away from the pretty feminine details.

Love this so much! Wouldn’t change a thing. Normally not a big fan of stripes but they really work with this piece. And mixing the fluff with some tea rose makes the stripes more subtle. Just beautiful!!

It’s a good thing I wasn’t with you the day you bought the dresser, Christy, because I’d have said to leave that hideous monstrosity behind! I actually have a cedar chest that looks like the bottom of your dresser and I cherish it because it was an old family piece. Otherwise, I don’t think I’d choose it for my house 😄 But no one has to know what a hulking ugly duckling that incredible dresser used to be! You put an amazing amount of work into making it appeal to a contemporary buyer while retaining its character. I don’t miss the gilding wax and I don’t think the new owner will, either. Well done!

Hideous was my first thought when you showed the original piece. I would’ve kept walking, maybe even have run away from it! However, you, in your typical Christy way, have shown me that just about every piece deserves a chance at love. You took the ugly duckling and made her a beautiful swan. Nice job! So many comments, that I’m sure you don’t need one more, but this is truly stunning. I am not a huge fan of pink, but it was the perfect choice for this dresser. And I love, love, love stripes, so also perfect! And no to gold guilding! It is perfect as is! Honestly, what a gift to reclaim a tired, old, beat up piece and have it live a whole new life! So much better than buying new. Someone is going to absolutely treasure this piece. Thank you for sharing! I love it!
