Hello, lovelies! I’m back to my haul today sharing a trio of painted baskets! Let’s jump right in!
They started out like this:

Sometimes I find the best baskets, but there was nothing spectacular or unique about this bunch.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Clean
I start all basket makeovers with a good vacuum to remove any dust:

And that’s pretty much it.
Painted Baskets Makeover #1
This first one was a thrift store find for $6.99 and was 50% off that:

I wasn’t in love with this one, but for $3.50, I took a chance on it.
I wasn’t sure where I was going with this one when I started, so I gave it a spray prime using Rustoleum Spray Primer in flat white just to get a quick first coat on it:

Spring is really in the air and one of my favorite spring/summer colors is Farmhouse Green, so I went over the primer with that using my Best Dang Brush:

The large, flat head of this brush is great for covering a large surface on this weave quickly!
I gave it two coats and then chose to add a simple stripe across the handle in Cotton for some whimsy:

I also went back and dry brushed a little with white, but it was cute enough without that:

To seal, I chose the easiest way, with Rustoleum’s Clear Satin Spray:

I sealed all three baskets this way.

Here is how the first basket turned out:

So fresh and light!

I could see this by the door holding shoes, or in a bathroom holding TP…whatever you can imagine!

Of course the striped handle is my favorite!

Painted Baskets Makeover #2
This next one was also $6.99, but it wasn’t on sale:

This one may have been the most unique if I had to pick one because it did have these dividers, which I haven’t seen before:

But they weren’t super sturdy in there and I ended up removing them.
I painted the entire basket inside and out with Cotton from Dixie Belle once again using the Best Dang Brush:

I worked in sections and after painting, I went over it with a clean cloth to remove some of the paint:

This is a great technique for painting baskets!
This one was sealed with Rustoleum’s Clear Satin Spray also and this basket makeover was complete!
Painted Basket #2 After

I did go back with my French Tip brush to hit the deeper parts of the weave a bit. The pointy tip on that really helps.

I like that this one has handles also:

Painted Baskets Makeover #3
And finally, we have this one that cost me $3.99:

I originally thought I would keep the lining, but I had to remove it to paint anyway. I ended up not adding it back because it wasn’t a great fit on the inside.
This one got two coats of a 3:1 Cotton to French Linen ratio. Then, I added a stripe with Rustoleum spray paint:

I pulled the tape off immediately:

I didn’t love that second stripe, so I ended up painting over it.
This one got a little extra embellishment on the front that I painted white first:

It was sealed the same as the other two.
Painted Basket #3 After
Here is how this final basket turned out:

I see these baskets all the time, but just a little paint magic can really update the look!

I added a small, glass knob to the center of this piece…
That’s how it is being held on:

How did you trim the post on the knob?
I get asked that often since these posts can be really long. I use a Black and Decker rotary tool with a metal cutting wheel attachment:

It comes with a bunch of pieces, but I believe I had to purchase the metal cutting wheel separately. I usually cut once the knob is already firmly in place. I also use two hands for better control…this is like a mini saw, so you have to be careful!

The peachy gingham was cute, but it’s more versatile now.
And that’s three painted baskets for my shop!

Do you have a favorite? I think I like the green one the best!
And that’s three more crossed off the list woohoo!

I need to get shopping…I only have two chairs for my next haul so far!
And after nearly 14 years of blog photos, my camera finally bit the dust, so I need to buy a replacement. At least I got through these photos, thank goodness! I’m hoping to have a new camera in time to photograph for Tuesday, but I’ll have something for you either way!
Have a wonderful spring weekend!

Oh all of them are so fresh and pretty now! I love the green one also, and love the 3rd one with the stripe and knob. You get pretty good prices on your baskets. I remember when used baskets were like $2.00 each!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! That green is so fresh. And yes, everything has gone up for sure, including baskets! XOXO
Cyndi says
I’m a sucker for a basket anyways, but these are all so pretty! (And I’m glad you shared about the spray sealer AND the cutting tool. Good to know!)
Christy says
Thank you, Cyndi! I like easy, and a spray sealer is just so much easier on things like baskets. It will leave an uneven finish on large, flat surfaces, so I only use it for smaller items. And that cutting tool works great! XOXO
Geri Davis says
I like them all, probably the green one best, I seem to get pulled to painting things in green, really loving the Briar Patch color!
Thanks for sharing, I appreciate the ideas!
Christy says
Thank you, Geri! Dixie Belle has so many lovely greens now! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Gwen says
They all look so much better!
BTW, the one that had dividers is for forks, knives, and napkins.
👏
Christy says
Thanks so much, Gwen! I gathered that, but the sections were so deep that it didn’t seem that functional. At least now its use isn’t as limited. Have a great weekend! XOXO
Laura J. says
LOVE all 3 baskets Christy! So, so pretty! Think the gray one is my favorite. I love your photography & staging as well. I knew the baskets were going to look so much bigger in your reveal!!! It’s always a nice surprise. Really enjoyed these makeovers!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Laura! I’m so glad you enjoyed them! They are always so much bigger when staged ha ha. And the staging is my favorite part!! XOXO
Debbie Pokerwinski says
You are so clever and inspiring! I just love watching your process, I always learn something about mixing paint colors, adding stripes and cutting off the knob posts. I collected some baskets for gift basket donations. They will look much more updated and appealing with a fun coat of paint! The green one is my fav but the gray/white stripe is a close second!
Christy says
I appreciate that so much, Debbie, thank you! I’m glad you find what I share helpful! Yes, it’s amazing what a little paint can do for a dated basket! XOXO
Michele M. says
Boring to beautiful!!!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Michele! A little paint magic does wonders! XOXO
Mary Loveland says
They all look great; I think the magic in those baskets is that they are all in such wonderful shape.
You know, you haven’t made one of those tool box-carryall totes for a long time, I thought those were so so cute!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! These baskets were in really great shape. I might have to make some of those totes…it has been a while! XOXO
Cecilia says
Those turned out pretty, Christy. The green one is probably my favorite too but all look nice. Such an easy but effective upgrade!
😊Cecilia
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! All thanks to a little paint magic! XOXO
Kathy from JAX says
All of these baskets are so cute and useful. I can just imagine them in a bathroom filled with towels or goodies for a guest. Love the little glass knob add on. I’m a green girl so it’s my favorite. It would look so good with flowers in it too! You always inspire us to paint and reimagine. Have a good weekend.
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy! Oh yes, perfect for goodies for guests or even to use as a gift basket filled with a fun theme of items for someone special. I do love the little glass knob addition on the last one for something different! Enjoy your weekend as well! XOXO
