Hello, dear friends, and welcome to another thrifty makeover! Today, I’m repurposing Hobby Lobby art that started out like this:
It was $9.99 at the thrift store, and I just loved that herringbone pattern!
I completed this makeover with the help of this fence picket:
I used one of these on this repurposed tray a couple of weeks ago and mentioned these came off the curb in my sister’s neighborhood, but those were actually smaller ones. I forgot that these were my sister’s old fence pickets! I have a bunch of them that I uncovered when I organized our garage.

The first thing I did was remove the arrow from the art, which was just held on with two screws:
(Find that petite drill HERE. It’s my favorite!)
The next thing I did was cut that fence picket to the size I needed using my miter saw:
I don’t know if you knew where this was going, but this was the idea I was playing with:
But first, I needed to fill in the tiny holes left by the screws, and I did that with a little Dixie Mud in the white:
While that was drying, I lightly sanded the fence picket using 220 grit sandpaper:
After the Mud had dried, I sanded that smooth also. I used my shop vac to remove any dust from from sanding, and it was time to whitewash!
Whitewashing
I absolutely love a whitewashed finish! To do that, I mixed a little water (about 1/3 water to 2/3 paint) in with my Cotton white paint from Dixie Belle:
I didn’t dilute it on the fence picket project I referenced earlier, and the finish was much more opaque, but I wanted more of the wood to show through this time.
I started by applying the watered down paint:
Then, I used a clean rag to wipe it off right away…
Because this had a pattern, I then went right back in with the cloth in the direction of the pattern.
I whitewashed the fence picket the same way:
I love this look for an old fence picket!
Painting the Brackets
The shelf brackets came from Hobby lobby, and I just gave them a quick prime with Rustoleum Flat White Spray Primer, followed by a coat of Blossom White Rustoleum Satin Spray Paint.
I do prefer chalk paint to spray paint, but I mentioned on Tuesday that I was looking for easy projects this week lol, and that was just easy!
Seal
I decided to seal everything before assembling it, and I did that with Rustoleum Clear Satin Spray. (Easy!)
Assemble my new shelf
All that was left to do was assemble my new shelf, and this project was complete!

And here’s how my new shelf looks now:
I am such a sucker for a classic herringbone pattern!
It’s hard to see the shelf there, actually, so let’s get in closer…
I had considered keeping it upright and adding several smaller shelves, but that would have cost more for all the brackets. That would’ve been a cool shelf for a narrow space though!
This would be great for above a sofa, or above a doorway maybe?
Remember how that old fence picket looked?
Just a light sanding and a simple whitewash, and it looks so much better!
Now I need to find a purpose for the arrow I removed!

Oh I love how that turned out. I love that you can still the wood grain from the wood, but it is fresher with the whitte wash. You can use the arrow to make a beach sign “beach this way” arrow to point the way LOL! Great job on piece #3.

Well that turned out so cute, and I love that it was quick & easy. Didn’t know what you were going to do at first, probably haven’t had enough coffee yet lol. I was picturing this in an entryway, with some hooks on it to hang coats/purses, some colorful little trays or baskets on the shelf to hold keys, mail, etc. I agree, someone will scoop this up, I would! Nicely done, love the whitewash as well. 🙂

Thank you, Allita! My original plan did include hooks, but I think the wood on the front is very thin and the backing is a very thin MDF type material, so I was afraid it wouldn’t support a lot of weight. That would have given it more function though for sure! XOXO

I was surprised to see how big the original art piece was. That’s a substantial shelf now. I also am interested to see the telephone table/bench redo. I have noooo ideas !!

So inventive; this turned out great! I love whitewashing too; I used it on our barn doors in our cabin. Even though they’re a farm-ish style, they now match my light and beachy theme and you don’t think barn when you look at them.
