Hello, gorgeous friends, and welcome back! It’s that time of the month again where I join my Furniture Fixer Upper friends to bring you furniture flips in need of some TLC! I’ve got a painted hutch makeover, and then be on the lookout for my friends’ makeovers at the bottom!
Painted Hutch Makeover
My contribution this month is this red painted hutch I picked up at the thrift store:
It was originally $74.97 marked down to $49.94 :
I honesty would have paid $75 for it because I just love hutches since they take up a good amount of space in my booth but come in two pieces for easier handling,
As most of you know, I don’t usually buy already painted pieces. Why give yourself more work? But the price was right and the paint job on this one wasn’t terrible, so I knew I wouldn’t have to remove all of the paint first.
It appeared that this coat of red was spray paint…
And while it was a great shade of red, I knew I wanted to change it up.
At first look, this doesn’t appear to be much of a fixer upper, but the finish was a bit beat up…
The real issue though was the inside! It stunk, likely due to mold growing on the door…
It’s difficult to see, but it’s there, trust me!
Also, there was this??
The first thing I did was remove the backing on the top piece, so I could get rid of that burlap:
It had been added with spray adhesive to the back and then reattached. What was originally there was so much better than that burlap!

Clean
Although I knew I would need to sand the existing painted finish to give it some grip, I went straight to cleaning first with White Lightning. It is a degreaser and a deglosser and comes in the concentrated granules you can mix or a ready-to-use spray.
I prefer the granules and mix one TBSP into a half gallon of warm water and get to cleaning!
These terrycloth sponges are perfect for this step. They can be tossed in the wash and used again and again.
The inside was especially dirty!
How??
Sand
Next, it was time to sand. I know it sounds counterproductive to clean first, but you don’t want to smear anything into the surface when sanding, and I didn’t want to take any chances on that area inside. Plus..,the mold!
I sanded all over the existing paint finish using 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old sanding sponge:
I was able to smooth out a lot of the imperfections that way.
Then, using my shop vac, I sanded away any sanding dust and gave everything another wipe down with a clean cloth.
Paint
Now for the fun part! I knew from the start I would be going with Dixie Belle’s Caviar on this hutch. I gave it two coats for solid coverage using my favorite brush, the Mini Angle from Dixie Belle:
If I were to paint over this red in a lighter color, I would have used Bonding BOSS in gray to neutralize the red.
I finally sold the black secretary desk in my booth, and I had just taken the telephone bench to coordinate with it, so this will replace the secretary.
I also painted the backing. It was a creamy color before, and this was after one coat of Caviar:
Two coats covered perfectly.
Sand
I don’t sand in between coats, but I always sand after to get a buttery soft finish. If I want distressing, I use traditional sandpaper in 220 grit and hit the edges a bit harder. However, I did not want any of that red to come through, so I used a fine grit sanding sponge instead here:
These sanding sponges don’t create much dust, so I just wiped away any dust with a soft cloth.
Seal
Next, it was time to seal!
When sealing darker pieces, I like to add just a touch of paint to my sealer for a nicer finish and to prevent the “ghosting” you get when you wipe your finger across a dark painted surface…
This is my favorite sealer for furniture, Clear Coat in satin, applying it with the blue sponge applicator:
The first coat isn’t always great, but the second coat is where it smooths and levels out for a beautiful finish. I try to go from edge to edge without overworking it to get the nicest finish possible. Applying it with the sponge allows you to apply it in thin, even coats.
Painted Hutch Makeover Reveal
Let’s see how this hutch turned out!
I’ve done a couple of black hutches before, and I just love the way they look staged with my white ironstone against the black…
These are all thrifted, and I just love them!
I don’t know if people covet china the way they once did, but I always see beautiful sets at the thrift store!
The Hardware
Instead of filling the original hardware holes, I opted instead to cover over them with this Enlightened Etchings mould instead:
I made it using Amazing Casting Resin:
I then painted it in the Caviar also and sealed with Clear Coat in Satin using a small brush.
It’s held in place with Titebond Quick and Thick glue.

The inside
Remember how the inside looked before? Here’s a reminder:
They had moved the shelf up weirdly high, so I chose to remove that.
And here’s how it looks now:
I went ahead and just painted the interior black as well. That camouflaged the indent that was left from where the shelf originally sat.
It’s now clean and new looking!
The Drawers
The drawers had overspray on them before:
I’m always bummed when people do this because it’s so easy to avoid that with just a little prep.
I sanded those areas down to remove the red…
Then, I hydrated them with Big Mama’s Butta, in the Ginger Zen scent, hitting the drawer slide while I was at it:
I chose to line the bottoms with fabric by attaching it with Matte Mod Podge:
And here is how they look now!
I use this Waverly Fabric I picked up at Walmart often. It’s black so it coordinates, but it’s really pretty too!
And no more overspray!
I’m excited to have another large piece for my booth! Black hutches don’t last long, so maybe this will sell quickly too!

It makes me so happy to see hutches and china cabinets saved and given new life. For some reason they seem to have fallen out of favor over the past few years and I don’t understand why. I go to a lot of auctions and estate sales and they practically give them away. Many of them are beautiful and such a smart and practical way to display china, glassware and other valuables. I have three – one left to me by my late mother, one from my sister and one full of uranium glass. Oh, and another one that is a project piece. LOL I hope and believe they will make a comeback. Thank you for helping others see how beautiful and functional they can be!
