Hello beautiful friends! Today, I’ve got a super simple makeover! I’m sharing a blue and white painted sofa table that I found like this at an estate sale last Friday:
I have really been jaded by estate sales in recent years. The ones in my area are all typically obscenely overpriced. So much so that I rarely stop when I see a sign for one beacuse you know, I’m cheap.
However last Friday, as I was turning into our neighborhood, I saw a sign at the entrance to the neighborhood across from ours for an estate sale, and it was a company that I didn’t recognize, so I did a quick u-turn and headed on over.
While there wasn’t a ton of things left, I’m so glad I stopped because I picked up this sofa table for only $20!
And, I also scored a vintage stool in the garage for only a dollar!
I had planned to share the dresser in my current haul for Furniture Fixer Upper Day today, but I decided to play with this table instead! Be sure to look out for three more fabulous furniture flips from my friends at the bottom!
Clean
The first order of business was a good cleaning with White Lightning, and these terrycloth sponges are perfect for the job!
I just mix one TBSP of White Lightning with a half gallon of warm water in this small tub I saved from my Mr. Clean sponges:
One jar will do a ton of projects! Once I finished wiping down my table, I swapped my water for clean water and gave it one last wipe down to remove any residue.
Then, I filled the holes in the drawers with Dixie Mud in brown since I planned to change out the hardware:
I let them dry outside in the warm air for most of the day before sanding the drawer fronts smooth.
Paint
I gave the bottom three coats of Cotton white, Dixie Belle’s whitest white, and I gave the top two coats of Savannah Mist:
When I went to paint the drawers, I got major bleeding from the sanding:
So, I added a coat of white BOSS to block the bleeding and allowed it to dry overnight before painting, and that one coat took care of it! No smelly products necessary to tame that bleed-through!
Once the paint was dry, I lightly sanded all over with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth and distress a bit.
Seal
I then sealed with two coats of Satin Clear Coat using the blue sponge applicator to apply it:
And that was it!
Blue and White Painted Sofa Table the After
I often use stencils, transfers, decoupage papers, resin moulds, etc in my makeovers, but it’s amazing what paint alone can do!
Right?
So bright and fresh, and this table now has a totally diffferent vibe!
I really love Savannah Mist, and I love it even more paired with white!
Changing up the hardware made a huge difference too!
I don’t usually paint the entire drawer, inside and out on my pieces, but these were just small, so I did…
I had originally planned to stain the top, but when I was deciding on a color to use on the drawers, I knew I wanted to paint the top in this soothing color also!
I love when I find something and can get started on it right away!
I hope y’all enjoyed this simple makeover today!
Don’t forget my friends have three more furniture flips to share with you today!

Hey, Miss Christy… This table turned out great… But, question on what you did to the drawers…. The final picture isn’t the original drawers from the “before..”… They fit or fill the large drawer openings…. Say, what…???? !!!!…. Thank you for your blog & sharing your love for make overs…. 👌 💞 🎶🌹
Christy says
Aww thank you, Judith! The drawers are the same, I just filled the old hardware holes and changed out the hardware for simpler ones. 🙂 XOXO

Vicki Clem says
Pretty makeover! I agree that estate sales can be quite expensive these days! Since I’m really wanting to get into furniture flipping, can I pick your brain as to why you didn’t do Boss all over on this piece since it was a darker stain? Is it because some dark stains don’t have that issue? Or is it because it saves time and product to just wait and see and touch up where needed? I have a very old drum table I want to paint a lighter color and it’s a dark reddish brown stain now. Thanks so much! I know the Silk has a built in primer, but I’m not sure what color or type of paint I’m using yet. I enjoy your makeovers!
Christy says
Thank you, Vicki! Yes, they are crazy overpriced these days! I did not use BOSS all over because it was not a super old piece. It is usually older cherry or mahogany pieces that give us trouble, unless the sealer has been compromised which is what happened when I sanded the drawers. If you’re not sure if it will bleed, you can paint it first and then BOSS if necessary. I hope that helps! XOXO
Patty says
Just agreeing with everyone else, Christy – this table is so lovely!! I’m never disappointed in your creations! I can’t imagine why your booth doesn’t stay sold out! 🙂

Carrie says
This turned out great! When I saw the “before” I was hoping you left the top dark and painted the bottom, but didn’t add any flowers/stencils. (I like things that are a little less frilly.) I LOVE how it turned out. You do beautiful work.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Carrie!! Funny, I was intending to do just that…stain the top and paint the bottom. I even sanded the entire top, but after selecting that color for the drawers, I knew I wanted to use it on the top too! XOXO
Bonnie says
My girl has came through again. No joke I have been following you for years and out of all I follow your stuff is closest to my heart. Glad you painted the top instead of stain. This makes it more elegant.
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Bonnie! You have been with me a long time and I truly appreciate it, my friend!! XOXO
Maurice says
I really enjoy your work. I am new to painting furniture with chalk paint. I read a lot of things about it in a lot of people say a primer is a must before using that paint. And I see a lot of people say there is no need for a primer. Can you please tell me your view on this situation I would really appreciate it not priming. It would save me a ton of work. Thank you in advance and I hope you have a very merry Christmas.
Christy says
Hi Maurice! When using chalk paint, generally, primer is not necessary for adhesion unless you are using it on a non-porous surface like metal, glass, laminate, etc. Then I would prime with Slick Stick, an adhesion primer. For most wood piece, it is not necessary. However, the exception is for older cherry or mahogany and sometimes oak where the finish has worn in places. For those pieces, if you do not use a primer, you will see the tannins bleeding through, so you will need to prime with a stain blocking primer like BOSS. The good thing is, you can get started painting and if you see those spots starting to come through, you can then add a coat of BOSS. That will happen with any kind of paint. But if you are working with a piece that is newer as in the 80’s or newer, you are usually safe to go straight to painting. You can see more on painting with chalk paint here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/how-to-paint-furniture-using-chalk-paint/ It’s an old post, but the information is current. I hope that helps! XOXO
