Hello lovely friends, I’ve got another sweet makeover to share today! Take a look at this little fixer upper I found at the thrift store for $7:
It’s hard to tell by this photo, but it has a horrendous paint job and the black you see around the flower detail? It’s ink pen. The paint was put on so thick in areas that I knew I would have to either strip it or sand it. I chose the latter and gave it a good sanding with my orbital sander before repainting.
Here is its sweet makeover:
I painted the top white and used Annie Sloan’s French Linen on the rest. For the drawer, I decided to add a lacy detail using a lacy curtain panel and spray paint:
I love the soft feel it gives this little piece.
I found the curtain panel at the thrift store for $1. I tried to find one that had a pretty pattern to it.
I also highlighted the flower detail with white.
And the feet…
Luckily the hardware was in a bag inside the drawer. I gave it a couple of coats of spray paint and roughed it up a bit. I love this style of hardware…
As you can see I also added a pretty contrasting pink pin dot paper to the inside:
I always like to add pretty paper to drawers. It’s so easy to do that I usually skim over how to do it. But for those of you that haven’t experienced Mod Podge before, I put together a quick how-to to pin for later!
If you haven’t tried this, I will warn you that bubbles are your enemy, and there are a few you will just not be able to get out. Applying the Mod Podge in thin layers will help minimize bubbles/wrinkles. I smooth it out like crazy with a credit card as soon as I apply the paper. I love this method since there are so many beautiful choices out there. This is regular 12X12 scrapbook paper. If your drawer is bigger just match up the pattern and slightly overlap the pieces, starting with smaller pieces at the back of the drawer and working forward. If items to be stored in the drawer could possibly be put away wet, I would recommend sealing with a quick coat of polyacric or spray on acrylic/clear sealer.
From this:
To this:
It is kind of sweet, right? And if you missed my last makeover, it was also a pretty sweet one:
Both of these ideas would be perfect for a little girls room! Anyone want to lend me their daughter’s room to decorate? You have to live somewhere warm though. 🙂

That table is adorable! I love it, you are really hitting your stride Girlfriend! You should be proud! How clever, it makes me want to have tea or something….what a great job
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Sally! Hitting my stride or feeling the pressure to fill that booth up ha ha! 🙂
Sally says
P.S. I love the way you styled the table as well, maybe that quaint lamp made me want to dress up, wear a hat and have tea with the girls, know what I mean? Ha!
Christy K. James says
Isn’t that lamp so cute? Perfect for tea with the girls. 😉
Jeannette Olton says
What a lovely transformation! But how on earth did you get all that awful ink out of the little crevices?
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Jeanette…luckily I was able to paint right over it with a small brush. 🙂
Vivien says
Hi Christie, that is really elegant little piece! Love the lace detail on the drawer. When you spray over the lace do you wait until it’s dry to remove it or do you remove it immediately after spraying? TFS
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Vivien! I removed it right away, but I’m not sure which would be better. I risked smudging the paint, but leaving it to dry risks it sticking to the drawer. Just be careful when removing. 🙂
Heather @ Viral Upcycle says
Sweet little table Christy. I love the lace effect! You really churn out great furniture pieces.
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, my friend! 🙂

Thanks, Denyse! I snatched this mirror right up as soon as I saw it! 🙂

I am fairly new to your blog and just love the beauty of all your items! I am hoping to soon tackle my first small piece of furniture with chalk paint! I love the lace detail, so clever! Also that lamp *heart*. Did you make that?
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Mary! I’m so glad to have you following along! I found that sweet lamp at Homegoods. I just had to bring it home. Good luck with your furniture project! 🙂
Bev says
Beautiful!! So inspiring. Question, so were you able to wash the lace and re-use it or is in ruined forever? I love the effect though! -Bev
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Bev! I’m sure it could be rinsed out and used again, but I’m bad and it’s still on the garage floor right where I left it. 🙂
Heather J says
Both are these are so beautiful!!!! I have a 7 year old but you probably don’t want to come to cold Ohio:) lol ….I especially love that table….genius:) Thanks for sharing!
Christy K. James says
Ohio is not exactly the warm destination I had in mind ha ha. I’m sure it’s even colder there! These ideas would be great ideas for your daughter’s room though! 🙂
Linda J says

Marie@The Interior Frugalista says
Oh my Christy I adore what you did with this cute table! Lov’n the French Linen too (one of my favorite ASCP colors) and the pretty pink paper. Did you make that adorable lamp too?
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! I have had this nearly full can of French Linen sitting in my garage for over a year and figured it was time I finally used it! The lamp was a Homegoods find. 🙂
Paula@SweetPea says
Another awesome makeover! I love how you used lace to create a stencil for the drawer front.
This is just a thought. The next time you get a bubble when using Mod Podge, slice the bubble open with the razor blade, paint some more Mod Podge under the bubble, and smooth it out. That might work.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Paula! You are so smart! I might have to try that next time. 🙂
Sue Farmer says
Love the table!! How do you come up with such great ideas? The lacy drawer effect is gorgeous. And I love that color. Kind of blue-gray. Have a good evening!! Get some rest!!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Sue! How did you know I needed to rest? I have been outside in the cold painting a dressing table today, and this evening, rest is exactly what I need. 🙂
Lisa says
Hi Christy,
I love this little table. That is a great tric with the lace. This spring (it will arrive !) I am tackling my first piece of furniture painting/staining. YIKES! I was told latex paint is fine to use. I need to read up. That wonderful tea cup lamp, did you make it? My sideboard is envious!
Love your blog.
Kind Reagards
Lisa
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Lisa! Love your email address…clever! You absolutely can use latex for furniture. A light sanding and a coat of primer first though or you can make chalk paint with it which won’t require sanding or priming. So many options! The lamp came from Homegoods. 🙂
Lisa says
Thanks Christy,
The email is cool , I snitched it from my sister. 🙂 I will keep in mind your paint suggestions, I like the easy peasy idea of chalk paint. I have never really read up on it other than knowing there is that and milk paint. Will be doing some major reading up on it.
Thank you again.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Lisa

Here is the recipe I use to make my own chalk paint: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/sewing-stool-redo-chalk-paint-recipe-revealed/ Have a great weekend too! XO
Joanne Boulter says
I’m going to start calling you the magic lady. You are amazing. Question. I have a large wooden screen, the frame will be painted white and I want to do something similar that you did on the lacy drawer, but I afraid of over spray. So I thought I could stencil on the screen. Do you have any other ideas? Thanx Jo
Christy K. James says
Ha ha you are so sweet! I think a stencil would be great. I also think a cool idea would be to remove the screen and staple gun lace in place of it. Would make a pretty piece! 🙂
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Love it Christy!! That lace technique is one of my favorites…and I’ve never done it yet! But it’s so pretty.
xo
Nancy
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Nancy!! XO
Pam says
That poor piece needed some love and lace! Great job on it. I like it.
Christy K. James says
It was really sad, the pictures don’t do it justice. Glad I could love it back to life! 🙂
Robin All Things Heart and Home says
Christy that is just beautiful…truly my kind of makeover with the lacy stencil…and you added the paper to the drawer! It’s just perfect! Thank you bunches for linking to Shabbilicious Friday~ xo

I’ve been wanting to try the ole spray-paint-over-lace thing but haven’t gotten a round tuit yet…your table looks lovely!

Christy K. James says
Thanks, Andi! This was my first go at it and I it turned out pretty cute. Might have to try it on something bigger now. 🙂
Laura S says
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I’ve been saving lace or lacy things to do something like you did with this drawer & have the perfect project going but hadn’t even thought about using the lace. I have a wooden trunk I’m painting with Americana Chalk paint & thought I’d stencil it since I didn’t find anything else to put on it but this is the perfect thing for it. I’ve got a couple of different papers to do the inside (once I decide which one to use) & then I can use lace to decorate the outside. I even picked up so lace metal ribbon one of the craft stores just started to carry so now I know how to finish the trunk.
By the way, I adore this night stand, & the mirror, if I only had a daughter, you’d be more than welcome to come decorate her room. It’s been unseasonably warm in north central Texas, but as usually happens, that’s about to change. I keep telling everyone snow is a 4 letter word, but no one listens, lol.
Thanks again, from a new reader, I’ll be roaming around seeing what other projects you’ve done, Laura
Christy K. James says
Sounds like you’re working on a real treasure! I just bought some metal ribbon at Michaels! It was the first time I’d seen it. I’m not sure what I’ll use it on yet. Thanks for following along and best of luck with your trunk. 🙂
Laura S says
I’m sorry, I forgot to ask, is the lovely, fun lamp also one of your projects? I’d love to know how to do it, Thanks again, heading home now to try the lace on my trunk.
Christy K. James says
I found that sweet lamp at HomeGoods, but I’d love to learn how to make one!
Ann williams says
I love all your ideas and the finished furniture!! They are beautiful. The linen drawer is fantastic. Thanks so much for taking the time to share!!
One question. Did you wax over the gray paint and if so can you tell me how you do that? Thanks again. I love your blog!!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Ann! I did wax over the grey and I use Annie Sloan’s clear wax. I’ll be honest, I have four other brands of clear wax in my workshop that I haven’t even tried, because I just love this one so much. You just wipe it on with a soft clean cloth, working in small sections. Then go back immediately with another clean soft cloth and wipe it almost completely off, going with the grain of the wood. It should feel smooth, not tacky. Let it dry for 15 minutes or so, then buff to a shine. 🙂
Dani says
Hi, dear… just came across your blog and love it! Just started using Annie’s paint for the first time and sooo hooked. Lol. And guess what I have two girls and one just happens to be in line to have her room redecorated. Lol and I do live in Florida! So email me if you are interested to come down here. Private master BR & bath are all yours. Use the pool as much as you like… in return you decorate her room! Seriously!!!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha thank you, Dani!! Oh sunny Florida! That sure is tempting….it’s 34 degrees here this morning! Brrrr!
