Amazing friends, welcome to another edition of Trashy Treasures Tuesday where I join three of my favorite treasure maker friends to bring you four brand new trashy makeovers in all! Look for the links to their projects at the bottom! My contribution is a $15 console table makeover.

Let’s get started, shall we?
I am indeed cheating on my current haul once again. I had a busy January in my booth and I need inventory ASAP! While surviving the frozen tundra that our lovely beach town has become ( I know many of you have it way worse, and you have my utmost respect!), I have been looking for project pieces I can easily bring indoors to work on.
I found two such pieces at the thrift store a couple of weeks ago, including this glass door cabinet I recently shared, and this console table:

The salesperson at Goodwill had just pulled this piece onto the floor and I was checking it out when she mentioned she had another piece I might like in the back. That was the cabinet I linked to above, and I immediately told her I would take that one.
This table had been priced at $24.99, and she asked me if I wanted this piece also. I told her I was trying to decide if the damage would be an easy fix…

I could see it wasn’t real wood and it looked like it face planted at one time. She looked at the price on it and said she could give me a better deal and how did $14.99 sound? SOLD!
Sand
Like the cabinet that was made of similar material, this surface was super slick, and I knew I wanted to either use Bonding BOSS or give it a good scuff sand. Chalk paint has excellent adhesion properties, but it only took me a few minutes to give this whole piece a once over with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old foam sanding sponge:

If this piece were wood, I would not have sanded.
Clean
After vacuuming up any sanding dust, I cleaned with White Lightning, mixing one TBSP into a half gallon of warm water. I used a terrycloth applicator pad which is perfect for this task:

You can see where I sanded the front there to smooth out where it had damage from face planting. I have no idea why those wild colors were under this factory finish.
Paint
Time for paint! I knew I wanted to use the new Chirping Charm large transfer that was just released, so I pulled out my CMP fan deck to choose a color:

That’s Savannah Mist, Dusty Blue, and In the Navy.
I decided on In the Navy! I went digging through my stash of paint and came across one very old jar:

I determined that the last project I used it on was this sewing cabinet makeover back in 2019 almost seven years ago!
Would you believe I was able to add some water and stir, and this came right back to life??
Yup!

I have had a jar or two dry up too much in that time if it had a lot of air in it, but this one was still about 2/3 full.
That’s amazing!
Sand
Next, I sanded all over to smooth using a fine grit sanding sponge:

I didn’t want any distressing, and these are great for that. And don’t worry if your sanded piece looks awful after sanding! Sealing it will make it beautiful again!
Adding a transfer
I loved this sweet Chirping Charm transfer as soon as I saw it and knew I wanted to use it on something! It comes with four sheets and they all meet to create one large image if you want a continuous pattern:

I rarely use them that way though. I like to be able to get several projects from one transfer.
Redesign transfers are often limited run, so this design may no longer be available if you are viewing this long after the posting date. See all the large transfers available in my Etsy shop HERE.
I decided that for this table, I would add a splash of transfer across the left side, both on the front and on the top…

Be sure to rub well with a soft cloth on darker surfaces to reduce the halo effect of the transfer. Sealing will also greatly diminish that.
Seal
Once I had all the transfer pieces that I wanted to use in place, I sealed all over using Clear Coat in Satin.
Because this was a dark surface, I added just a dollop of paint to my sealer:

This gives a nicer finish and prevents that “ghosting” effect you get when you run your finger across a dark painted surface.
I applied it with the blue applicator sponge:

Try not to keep going over an area once you apply it. If you miss any spots, get it on the next coat. I usually do two coats.
TIP: If you can, don’t stand in front of a wide piece like this when you apply it. The natural arc of your arm will cause it to be applied in a slight arc. Instead, bring your sponge from one side to the other bringing the sponge towards you as I am in the above photo. You will get a straighter application.
$15 Console Table Makeover Reveal
Here’s how this $15 thrift store find turned out:

So sassy now!

I kept the transfer to just the left side both on the front and continuing onto the top…

Although I was definitely tempted to keep adding, I like that this allows the right side to be free for a lamp or a vase of flowers without covering the transfer.

The drawer
The inside of the large drawer was painted in Savannah Mist:

It was just the right amount of contrast with the Navy:

I already had this hardware, and I love that the large size is so unexpected:

I hope you enjoyed this trashy treasure today!

Oh my it is BEAUTIFUL! I guessed black, so I was wrong, but I love the in the navy color and it is still a dark color that looks so great with that transfer! I love this piece and it wouldn’t even go to your booth if I lived closer, it would go right to my home!
Christy says
Ha ha thank you, my friend! I loved seeing it against the black on the package as well! Hope your week is off to a great start! XOXO
Janice Redden says
Christy, great find and beautiful makeover!!! I’ve been hunting quick turnaround projects, too; so “cheating” on your haul is ok — we will get to enjoy those makeovers a few weeks longer!!! Stay warm!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Janice! It has been really nice to have some easy pieces to work on for sure! And we are finally thawing out today, thank goodness! I’m not built for the tundra ha ha! XOXO
Christine says
Love how this turned out!
Christy says
Thank you, Christine! XOXO
Cecilia says
Oh! Navy! No, that’s not what I guessed. Purple crossed my mind but then I was like, nah. Maybe white, lol. So I was wrong! lol. But navy is perfect on this piece. The transfer adds just the right bit of fancy and I do adore the large knobs! Great job on this trashy piece. My daughter is over that direction and she said she’s ready for it to warm up! We hit 80 yesterday. Crazy weather.
Christy says
I rarely use navy, so I’m guessing many did not guess that lol! Thank you, my friend! We have had below freezing temps for so long, and that is so unusual for us! We had a 30 degree warm up from yesterday…it was like summer with temps in the 50’s ha ha! 80 is crazy too! XOXO
Jackie C says
yep, really, really like this one. I love the colors you chose, and I especially like just the sprinkling of transfer. Beautiful
Christy says
Thanks so much, Jackie! It was hard to stop where I did with the transfer ha ha! XOXO
Linda says
Your chosen elements create such a winner here and work together extra well! Color, transfer placed asymmetrically, knobs, inside drawer color, staging. Wow!! I really like this one.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Linda! I’m so glad you enjoyed how this one turned out! XOXO
Laura J. says
Just so pretty Christy! Love the hardware – go big or go home! LOL! Beautiful navy color. Always look forward to seeing your emails in my inbox, thank you! You are as amazing as your makeovers!🩷
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that SO much, Laura, thank you! And ha ha yes…I love the large hardware too! XOXO
Lizzy says
That’s beautiful. I like the subtlety of the transfer. Really nice.
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! XOXO
Cheryl says
I love this table! It’s a classy looking piece of furniture and you made it look fabulous! I have a question. You said if it had been real wood you wouldn’t have sanded it. What would have been your steps then? Thanks so much! I love seeing how you make things beautiful again!
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! I usually only sand to prep a piece if it needs smoothing out in areas or if I had to fill damaged areas. Otherwise, I clean and paint! An exception would be an older cherry or mahogany (and sometimes oak) piece that may have tannins that will bleed through the paint. In that case, I start with a layer of Bonding BOSS to prevent any bleed through (and wait 24 hours), but I still do not sand. Chalk Mineral Paint has excellent adhesion. Silk Paint, on the other hand, does require a scuff sand to give it some grip OR a layer of Bonding BOSS first. Because the surface on this piece was non porous much like a laminate, I chose to play it safe and sand first. XOXO

So sassy and beautiful, Christy! I always love your transfer placement as well – looks gorgeous! Pinned. Stay warm my friend. XOXO
Christy says
Thank you so much, my friend! I know you live in freezing temps all winter, but I am not used to that lol. I have so much respect for you guys in the north! We had a 30 degree warm up today…temps in the 50’s and it felt SO warm lol! You stay warm now though! XOXO

I love the lines of this cute table. You gave it the perfect amount of character. I also love the hardware! Perfect update. 🙂
Christy says
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one, P, thank you! XOXO
Petra says
Christy, I love that you kept it dark and that transfer is divine 😀 xo
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! I love this transfer against the dark too! XOXO
Kathy Owen says
I want this table! It is absolutely stunning Christy. I’m an asymmetrical girl, so I love the placement of the transfer. The knobs are perfect, and I love the navy color. Glad you were able to save the paint. I never knew that about the arc of your arm and applying the sealer. Learn something new every day. Kathy
Christy says
Aww thank you, my friend! I too love an asymmetrical look. I usually overlook these fake wood pieces you have to assemble and opt instead for the vintage pieces that are so needy. Now I’m asking myself why lol! And yes, I figured that out about the sealer a couple of years ago, and it really helps! Always fun touring with you!! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
That is so gorgeous now, Christy!! I love the transfer you chose and glad you did it only on the one side! xoxo
Christy says
Thank you, Nancy! It was hard to stop there lol, but it really didn’t need any more! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
I don’t know why, but I guessed it would be pink! I can’t believe it’s been that long since you painted anything navy, Christy. The table is just divine now, with that bit of transfer, and it is impossible to tell there was ever any damage.
Christy says
Oh funny! Maybe for Valentine’s Day? That would have been fun! And I can’t believe it had been that long since using Navy either. Thank you so much, my friend! XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
So lovely! A truly authentic look to enhance any home!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Rose! XOXO
Jeanne says
LOVE IT!!! Quite a transformation and a perfect example of breathing new life into an existing item.
Christy says
Thank you, Jeanne! I enjoyed giving it new life! XOXO
