Hello sweet friends! Today I’m back sharing this steal of a deal Bombay table that I scored for less than $8:
It started at the bargain basement price of $15.25 and then it was 50% off that!
That made it $7.60 before tax…insane! This is the Goodwill closest to our house and they have a really small area allotted for furniture, so they price it to move! An old pilled sweater will be $6 though…not cheap! Go figure.
After getting fancy with my last two makeovers HERE and HERE, I was just going to paint this piece in Fluff and call it a day, but it had a few deep scratches in the top.
I decided instead to give the top a whitewashed finish:
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
To get this look, I sanded the top down with my orbital sander using 120 grit sandpaper first, then 220 grit…
The top piece was not solid wood, but the very top was a thick veneer so I was able to sand as much as I needed.
And after a good clean up with my shop vac and a clean cloth, I gave the top a coat of Dixie Belle’s VooDoo Gel Stain in Up in Smoke:
This is the perfect base for a coastal white-washed finish. I followed up with Dixie Belle’s Fluff watered down with water (about three parts paint to one part water). I brushed it on and immediately wiped it off with a clean cloth:
I shared this process in a video you can see below:
If you have trouble viewing, find it on YouTube HERE.
The rest of the table was painted in two coats of Dixie Belle’s Fluff.
I sanded all over, including the whitewashed top, with 220 grit sandpaper. Then the top was sealed with Gator Hide. I imagined this piece in an entryway catching keys and wanted to give it an extra durable topcoat.
It’s hard to tell in the photo above, but Gator Hide does have some sheen to it. The rest of the table was sealed with Clear Coat in Satin.
This stone wall is Airstone Veneer. I did a feature wall of it in my office. You can see more about it HERE.
Piece number three done!
See the first two makeovers below if you missed them!

That table is absolutely beautiful now! I will never get over how much a little bit of paint can do miracles to make something beautiful that once was so ugly! I love how you staged the set up for your photos, absolutely stunning! Looking forward to the tray on Tuesday! Thanks for doing what you do and always for inspiring me!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! Paint never ceases to amaze me either! Have an amazing weekend!! XOXO

Beautiful table !!! What a bargain at Goodwill !
Christy says
Thanks, Pamela! It was a steal! XOXO
Sandras says
First…the Goodwill s in Raleigh never reduce things….rats. I have noticed people buying stained furniture more often lately. Last…would any stain be okay as a base for the washed look? Love your stuff…wish I had great ideas like you.
Christy says
Yes…people are catching on to this painting furniture thing and it is getting harder to find good pieces! You can use any gray stain. I used a weathered wood finish stain to do my kitchen table a couple of years ago. You can see that here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/pedestal-kitchen-table-makeover/ Thank you!! XOXO
Christina in SW FL says
Wow, tah-day a beautiful table! You did a gorgeous makeover here, as always. Love the white wash top. Truly a new life for this cutie. The mirror on the top is beautiful as well.
Christy says
Thank you, Christina!! I almost wish I had a place for it as I like it with the mirror too lol! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
I’d have trouble letting that one go, Christy! I loved the shape before and it looks so fresh now. Speaking of love – that mirror! They go together beautifully. Is that one you did and I’ve just forgotten?
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie! I know…I love it paired with that mirror! It will be hard to say goos-bye to this one. The mirror came from Kirklands several years ago. I gave it a quick wash of white paint when we moved to our new house to whiten it up! XOXO

Sue Mellette says
Love the white-wash finish you did on this table. It looks so fresh and entirely different. I have several pieces of dark furniture, side tables, sofa table, etc. I am thinking about doing something similar. Christy, you are so talented and your work is so inspiring to me. I look forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays to see what magic you have done with your “haul.”
Christy says
Thank you SO much, Sue!! I say go for it, but I’ll warn you…it is quite addicting ha ha! Thanks so much for following along with me!! XOXO
Addie says
Hey!!! You said, “this was $7.60 before tax……the Goodwill doesn’t charge tax…right??? At least not in California and Arizona. I am curious to know about where you live if they do…..Virginia???
Good redo on that Bombay table……not my favorite quality of stuff. I stay away from it. You can always spot it a mile away.
Have a good weekend!!!!! Go Niners!!!! (even though B-ball is my game!!!)
Christy says
Thanks, Addie!! The good thing about pieces like this Bombay table is that you rarely have to worry about bleeding issues which makes them a dream to paint! Yep, everywhere charges sales tax in VA. I have money on San Fransisco! I’m a Redskins fan, but they will probably never make it to the Super Bowl with their luck lol! XOXO
Addie says
You should check into that tax and ask them why? They rely on donations and they are a non-profit. Everything they sell in their store has already been taxed when it was new. I would be curious what their answer is. I have never heard of a thrift store ( from many states)charging tax.
I am an EX- Bay Area girl so of course loyal to my 49ers AND
MY WARRIORS!!!!! If 49ers weren’t in it …I wouldn’t watch. I don’t think the Cardinals and the Suns will be going for a while!!!
Christy says
I guess it is a state thing. Many states charge sales tax on everything, including thrift stores that are not-for-profit. Your reasoning makes sense though! Go 49ers! 🙂
Cecilia from Georgia says
I shop Goodwill everywhere I go and the last 4 states I have bought anything in has charged tax. I guess the East coast had more revenue needs! Good for CA!!
Sheila DelCharco says
Simply stunning! I love the coastal feel to it!
Christy says
Thank you, Sheila!! XOXO
Naomi Shelton says
Christy, when I saw the first picture of this black table I tho’t even at that low, low price I wouldn’t have bought it. It just looked too, too heavy and out of date. Gosh, what a little white paint and a vision can do! The thing that really makes the table unique and beautiful is the treatment you gave the top. You have such great vision for updating the pieces you re-do. Thanks for sharing this one!
Christy says
Thank you, Naomi!! I am so happy you like the final results! I couldn’t imagine why nobody had bought it even at $15, but maybe others thought it was a bit dated as well in its original finish. Paint works miracles for sure! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
I agree with all the other comments! The grey wash is so classy with the white. Tuesdays and Thursdays are so fun to look forward to. I have just sold 2 pieces in my booth and I’m giddy with excitement! They were both aqua and one had stripes and the other was stenciled. You should be proud of me as I get my inspiration from you! Thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge!
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia and congratulations, my friend!! How exciting! It is always a good feeling when you sell something!! XOXO
Rosie says
Beautifully done!! I wish I can score deals like that in Canada lol… looking forward to your next project😊
Have a good weekend!
Christy says
Thank you, Rosie! Enjoy your weekend too! XOXO
ROSE LEFEBVRE says
There is a gracefulness to this piece.
Christy says
It does have pretty lines! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Teresa says
When you whitewashed the bombay table did you use the gray gel stain also. Do you always use gray when whitewashing pieces.?
Christy says
Hi Teresa! Yep! I used the gray stain as a base. Probably any gray stain or weathered wood finish will work. If you go straight to whitewashing without tinting the wood gray first, you will get the look you see in this makeover: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/whitewashed-cabinet-makeover/ Hope this helps! XO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy! I love the table. I am looking for a small entryway table to my new apartment and i am definitely going to create the driftwood top with Up in smoke. Thank you for all of your inspirations and creativity. Don’t know where i would be without you.
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! You are the sweetest! I just love that finish…enjoy making your new apartment your own! XOXO
Debbie says
Hi Christy, as others have said it is a lovely table. Since I have 3 or 4 Bombay pieces I would like to know if you used primer on the base of the table first and then painted? I plan to copy your method to update a piece. I did not realize it was possible to sand Bombay furniture. Thank you for all the great DIY posts as this encourages me to get going on my projects.
Christy says
Thanks, Debbie! No primer needed…this furniture paints up like a dream. The top sanded nicely, however, the rounded edge appeared to be more like MDF, so the top is probably a thick veneer. Have fun with yours! XOXO
