Hello awesome Friends! It’s Thursday and if you saw my super sweet makeover on Tuesday, you know I’m back today sharing what I did with this pretty hutch:
You may have seen this on my Facebook page last week along with some other fun finds I scored.
I sold almost all the furniture I had left in my booth in January, so I needed furniture to flip, and fast! I decided to head out for a day of thrifting last Thursday. I stopped at seven stores and found a few treasures to help get me started on replenishing my booth.
I found this hutch on my last stop. It was only $99 at one of my favorite thrift stores, and I had a $5 off coupon too! Coupons at the thrift store? I have no shame! 🙂
$94 was a steal for this beauty:
You were expecting white weren’t you? I went full on blue on this one, and I just love how it turned out.
I love hutches anyway, and rarely pass on a good deal on one when I see one. They are so charming and offer a ton of storage!
White hutches do sell great, but I decided this one needed my favorite blue, Behr’s Gray Morning (mixed 50/50 with Pure White) that I made into DIY chalk paint.
I did start out painting this one white:
But that was just so that when I sanded, white would show through the blue. Isn’t the first coat always so ugly??
It was a beautiful and unexpectedly warm weekend here last week, so I spent all weekend outside with my paintin’ pants on!
I only needed to add one coat of blue over the white…
It’s kind of hard to see, but after sanding white showed through on all the raised parts…
You can see better in this close up:
Anyone for tea?
I removed the glass in the cabinets to make painting them easier. This is easy to do if you have these rubber pieces holding the glass in place:
They just pop in and out.
I kept the original handles after spray priming them, then painting with Rustoleum’s Satin White:
And you can see I lined the drawers with this pretty drawer liner I found at the thrift store for 99¢:
I only had enough to do the top two drawers, but the other drawer is in great condition inside.
I had a few of these knobs left over that I found at HomeGoods for this girly dresser:
Some pretty coastal inspired ones like little starfish would have been really cute too. I sealed everything with Annie Sloan’s clear wax, and now it’s all set to head to the shop. Just need some muscles to help me get it there. 🙂
I hope you enjoyed today’s makeover!
But wait, there’s more!!
I’m hanging out with my new Furniture Fixer Upper crew today!!
That means there are FIVE more awesome furniture makeovers for you to see!

I’ll be back here bright and early Tuesday sharing what I did with these pretty china pieces:
I bet you can already guess. 😉

I wasn’t sure what color you would use on it, but I knew it would turn out amazing! I wish you would just make a road tip and bring it to my house. It is Lovely and I could use all that storage. I look forward to both your post over my morning coffee, your the best.
Christy says

Beautiful makeover!! I am so glad you chose blue!! 🙂 The white hardware is just the right touch with the crystal knobs. 🙂
How long do you think it took you from start to finish? I’m just curious because it looks like an intense makeover.
Thanks always for sharing your art!!
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! I am SO glad I abandoned the white this time for this pretty blue too! I started this on Saturday morning and finished by Sunday afternoon, but I was working on a china cabinet at the same time. A couple of days is totally doable if you have the whole day to paint. 🙂
Christina in FL says
Fantastic Christy! Thank you for your insight and more details! Create on!! 🙂

Dang girl, you are GOOD. I always get sucked into your emails, then a few clicks and I want to redo everything in my house. I recently redid a hutch and tried to use polycrilic over and it was HORRIBLE. I see you do clear wax. Do you have a tutorial you could share on it? Or a favorite Youtube video of it being done?
Christy says
Aww thank you, Susie! I love to hear that you enjoy what I share around here. Polycrylic can work great, but only if you use the right brush. You can see what I used here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/how-to-paint-a-laminate-kitchen-table/. The right brush will make all the difference as I learned the hard way! I do love the finish of wax though, and I share how I apply it here in my chalk painting tutorial: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/how-to-paint-furniture-using-chalk-paint/. I hope this helps! XOXO

Candy says
Great job! I rarely comment but always read. Cant wait to see what you do with the china. BTW, that drawer liner can be found at Dollar Tree, I use it all the time and love it.
Blessings
Christy says
Thank you so much, Candy! I truly appreciate you following along with me. And thanks for the tip on the liner. That makes sense now why the roll was so small…I’ll be on the hunt for more now! XO
Kimberly says
Great job as always! I guess this is about my favorite color as far as home dec goes. My living room walls are about this color and the accents in our main bath.
Christy says
Thank you, Kimberly! I LOVE this color too, and it is my favorite to use in my home as well! XOXO
Marie|The Interior Frugalista says
Holy Gray Morning, you are so pretty. It completely transformed this dated hutch. Who would’ve thought that could turn into this fresh beauty. Beautiful makeover, Christy!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Marie!! I’m so glad I took a break from the white for this one! 😀
Karol says
Love this piece and the color is great. I’m in VB and would love to know how much you’re selling it for. As always, thanks for sharing your talents.
Christy says
Hi Karol! Thank you! It’s priced at $425, and we just dropped it off this afternoon to my booth. One of the knobs broke in transport so I’ll be stopping by tomorrow to replace it. 🙂

Julie B. says
Ok… One of my new faves!!!! The color is perfect… and, yes, I was TOTALLY expecting white. 🙂 Good trick on your part! 😉 Love the way you kept some of the hardware blue, and then added the glass knobs. 🙂 I bet this sells fast!
Christy says
Aww thanks, Julie! So glad you like it…I am loving the blue on this pretty piece. We just dropped it off today so hoping for a quick sale! XOXO

Christy says
Thank you, Cyndi! XO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
Christy, I love it! (I came very close to using Duck Egg Blue for my dresser, so ours would have been similar, Ha) The layered look of blue and white is just beautiful. xo
Christy says
Thanks so much, Jen! That would have been funny, especially since Marie used a similar hue too! XOXO
Suzanne says
Another beautiful piece!! I just love it. Since people in other states are interested in your pieces, maybe you should consider selling to people far away because I know they sell pool tables on Ebay, so why not sell/ship furniture….just a thought. Keep up the fabulous work!
Christy says
Thank you Suzanne! That would be awesome and I know it can be done, but it so much easier to drop it off at my booth and let them do the rest! Maybe some day. 🙂
ROSE LEFEBVRE says
WOW! What an amazing change! The piece no longer looks heavy. Love the hardware now!
Christy says
Thank you, Rose! It’s amazing how paint can change the entire feel of a piece! 🙂

Christy says
Well thank you, Patty! I appreciate that! 🙂
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Love the color Christy! 🙂 It’s a gorgeous makeover! I love these big pieces you do! I am usually by myself (in my car) and end up passing these bigger pieces by these days. I need a delivery service! Lol
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy! I had several smaller pieces in my car when I found this, so I had to go back and pick this up, and it took two trips. I agree it really is a lot of bother, but my booth was so pitiful I needed a couple of big pieces! XOXO
lori says
love the color. is the mixture end result more of an aqua color or is it a very light gray? looks to have an aqua hue? also, i am trying to locate an old post of yours to remove laminate from a piece using a wet
towel method. can you recall?
Christy says
Thanks, Lori! This color is more of a muted aqua blue than gray. I wish I was smart and patient enough to use the wet towel method ha ha, but that was my friend Larissa’s trick that I linked to. You can see her use it here: http://prodigalpieces.com/damaged-veneer/ She swears by it! 🙂
Kendra says
