Hello sweet friends! I have a sweet little child’s chair makeover to share with y’all today!
Here is how this cutie pie child’s chair makeover started out:
A tiny little chair for a tiny little behind!
I found it at a yard sale in our neighborhood, and I thought I had only paid $5 for it. I found this chair that I shared HERE at the same yard sale and that was $5, so I guess I assumed this one was also. However, I noticed the $10 tag on there when I was photographing that photo.
The gal told me it was really old, but I would have offered less in the condition it was in.
But here we are!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Test for Lead paint
The very first thing I did was test for lead paint since it was suppose to be super old. I use these test strips on Amazon, and they are so easy to use!
Luckily, this was negative for lead paint. If it had been positive, I likely would have just tossed it and just kissed my $10 good bye lol.
Clean
Next, I gave it a good cleaning with White Lightning cleaner.
Fill cracks
Then, I busted out the Dixie Mud to fill in all those cracks:
I let it sit for a couple of hours and then sanded it smooth with 220 grit sandpaper using my Ryobi cat sander:
This is perfect for smaller jobs. I have the cordless version that uses their multiuse batteries, but they make a corded version too.
Paint
Time for paint! I chose a fun color for this piece, Dixie Belle’s The Gulf:
I painted two coats and then sanded it smooth all over using a sanding sponge.
Transfer time!
I chose this color to go with these remnants of the Cosmic Roses transfer I had left over from this dresser and nightstand set…
I keep all the scraps!
That larger piece was perfect for the seat of this chair…
Seal
Once I had the transfer where I wanted, I sealed with Clear Coat in Satin using the blue sponge applicator:
The sponge makes sealing those spindly legs much easier than trying to use a brush.
The After
Here is how this cutie turned out!
Can you tell how tiny this chair is?
Too bad Brennan was in school or I would have had him demonstrate ha ha!
Let’s see that transfer a bit more…
How pretty is it with this gorgeous color?
This transfer is HUGE and comes with six sheets. It’s perfect for a large piece like I used it for on this dresser, but imagine all the smaller things you could use it on!
Lyla arrived right on cue as I was setting up my camera…
Hi sweet girl!
Much better!
One more done…

Super Cute! What a darling little ‘time out’ chair. Love that color and adding the decal made it even more beautiful
Christy says
Thank you, Colleen! Isn’t it the cutest…so tiny!! XOXO
Mary Kaiser says
It is so cute!! I love that transfer with that color. I wish Brennan would have been there, that would have been a funny picture! I don’t think that litttle chair would have survived that, I remeber a basket that he sat on! That chair looks like the perfect size for Lyla! I will keep checking my email for your notification that I have won the gift from the contest! Fingers crossed!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I wish he was too…it would have been so funny! But yep, maybe it’s a good thing he wasn’t ha ha! I was trying to get Ms Lyla to move her big bum out of the way, but she was staying strong lol. Have a great one! XOXO

Those transfers take a lot of time…I’ve had success with just a few seconds of waving my hair dryer over the area .it sticks faster.
Christy says
Oh that’s good to know…I’ll have to try that next time! XOXO
Janice Holt says

Thank you, Diana! Isn’t it the cutest? So tiny! And yes, well worth the price! XOXO

PRECIOUS and so is the chair 😂.
I’m really thinking of re-doing a highboy chest like so many you’ve done. I’m scared 😳.
I will study your work again right before I start.
I always look forward to your surprises and never get tired of them.
Thank you for you inspiration!❤️

Bright and cheery! It’s a sweet little chair. Days are getting shorter and colder and a burst of color is a welcome little, …happy to see you today! Thanks Christy!!

Christy says
Thank you so much, Charleen!! XOXO

I don’t believe you paid $10 for the chair, Christy. I’ll bet you got a deal by buying a bunch of stuff and just forgot, because that doesn’t sound like you at all 😉 I never would have thought it could turn out so cute! The transfer seems very “adult” but works perfectly here. Someone is going to love pulling that up to their coffee table for a little one instead of some horrible plastic chair.
Christy says
Ha ha did I mention I was on drugs? It was day three of my gum graft surgery lol…I was not in my right mind. You know me so well! It does seem worth it now though ha ha! Thank you, my friend! 😀 XOXO
Caye Cooper says
Good save on this cute chair, Christy! Love that transfer, too.
Tell me, if this piece was a keeper and it tested positive for lead, how could it be saved?
Christy says
Thanks, Caye! I would have likely tossed it especially because this is child’s piece. You cannot sand it or it will release lead particles into the air which can be toxic. Lead paint can be painted over, but it requires a special kind of paint. XOXO
Cyndi says
That is so pretty! It’s so cheery. It’s one of my favorite transfers. (But Lyla looks like she’s thinking, “Why are you fooling with that gadget instead of petting me?” Ha ha!)
Christy says
Thank you, Cyndi! I love this transfer too! Lyla actually looks like she’s thinking I’m some kind of idiot 🤣. XOXO
Addie says
Well…..you should have had your other son, Jack, try the chair. If he broke it, he would have fell down and broke his crown!!!
Have a good one!!!!….the Adster!!! xoxo
Christy says
Ha ha you outdid yourself on that one! XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
I love the new life you gave to this chair! So lovely!
Christy says
Thank you! These little pieces are so much fun to work on! XOXO
Michele M. says
That is so super cute!!!! Funny, when I was in third grade I had a crush on a boy who had the longest eyelashes and curly dark brown hair. He was so adorable. He gave me my first “lovey” Valentine. And he lived in a little cottage house by the water in that very color. Kids. What can I say?
That chair is just so so cute. And a BIG grats to lucky Charlotte D! Whoot!
Christy says
Thank you, Michele! What a sweet story and funny how things can trigger memories! XOXO

Hello Christy Just wanted say thankful for all the tips and ideas you give. I’m retired but like to keep busy with a project. We resently had an extension built which we named The Garden Room . I saw the dresser ( you call a hutch) that you painted black and absolutely loved it so my colour theme was black white and gold. So thankyou again and l look forward to Tuesday’s and Thursday’s to see what ideas you have.
Best wishers Josie Derbyshire England
Christy says
Hello Josie from across the water!! Thank you so much! I love that. I bet your garden room is gorgeous!! XOXO
Petra says
The chair is very cute now but oh my, Lyla is looking gorgeous 😀 More photos of her please haha!
Christy says
Ha ha thank you! My sweet girl is always nearby. I swear she follows me around like a puppy. I’m surprised she doesn’t make it into more photos! XOXO
Mari says
So today is Thursday but when I click in the picture of the small chest (this one involved swearing or something like that) your site loads this small chair again ????? Hard to find a way to let you know about this.
Christy says
Thank you for letting me know, Mari! Hopefully, you got the updated link but if not, here you go: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/vintage-brother-sewing-machine-cabinet-makeover/ XOXO
