Hello awesome friends and welcome to Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday!! Ya’ll know I love this day because four of my treasure-maker friends are also sharing makeovers of their own! Who doesn’t love a good makeover (or five)?? Be sure to look for their projects at the bottom!
On Thursday I mentioned that I went thrifting last week in search of a couple of furniture pieces for my booth, dressers to be exact. They are great fillers and sell well for me. I did come across a few in my hunt but nothing that was a good candidate for a makeover.
When I got home I hopped on Craig’s List and came across a dresser for $40 that seemed to be in really great condition. I rarely look on Craig’s List, but I was running out of options.
I drove an hour each way to pick up this dated little chest of drawers:
I ended up hitting traffic both ways, normally I would have been there and back in an hour.
I have redone a few dressers similar to this and knew it could be updated pretty easily.
Children’s pieces generally sell quickly for me so I had a little boy in mind when I painted this one:
Stripes to the rescue! I use stripes a lot. They are such an easy way to add a little something to a piece of furniture. I have included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
But first I had to remove the old hardware that was really dating this dresser, and fill in the holes. I used Plastic Wood All Purpose Wood Filler:
The trick to getting a super smooth surface over those old holes is patience! Let the wood filler dry completely and then sand smooth. I use my orbital sander and 220 grit paper. Then I close my eyes and rub my hand across. If I can still feel where the old holes were, I add more filler and repeat the process.
You’d never know where the old holes were!
The color I chose is Behr’s Sparrow mixed 50/50 with Ultra Pure White, made into DIY chalk paint. (Find recipe HERE.) I love Sparrow by itself but I didn’t have quite enough left, so I added the white just in case. I used the same white for the stripes. I sealed with MMS Furniture Wax. I am enjoying her wax these days since it is not quite as stinky as what I normally use. It is a bit pricier though.
Find my tutorial for painting furniture with chalk paint HERE.
To add the stripes I used Frogtape for Delicate Surfaces:
I pulled the tape off immediately after my second coat of paint. See this dresser redo to see how I get my stripes just right!
My recently painted baskets made for fun props!
The white ceramic knobs I chose for this piece came from Hobby Lobby…
I chose not to line the drawers with fabric like I usually do. The original owners had added drawer liners, and they were in perfect condition underneath!
These pictures were taken in my dining room. As you can see I have yet to paint this room.
I’m still trying to find the best spot for taking photos in the new house. That wall is not the most photogenic backdrop.
It’s amazing what a little paint and new knobs can do!
This is the first piece I’ve painted for my booth since the move! I need to keep it going, especially with the Holidays creeping up on us soon!
Don’t forget to check out what my friends are making over today as well! 🙂
We pulled out our Halloween décor yesterday and got started decorating outside! I know Halloween is not for everyone, but if you’ve followed me for long at all, you know how much we enjoy it around here. I’ll be back on Thursday with a Halloween favorite I made with this mailbox post:
UPDATE: See what became of this mailbox post HERE now!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

There’s those signature stripes! Such a pretty makeover that would work in a boy or girl’s nursery. Pinned
Christy says
Thanks, Marie! You know I love me some stripes! XOXO
Debra Wise says
So gorgeous! Your stripes are matched up perfectly. Do you have a previous tutorial showing how you measure where to put the frog tape for the stripes and how to match up all drawers evenly?
Christy says
Thanks, Debra! I sure do and I’ll edit this post to include it as well: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/dated-dresser-makeover/ XOXO

Christy, it turned out fantastic! What a great way to start filling up your booth, but I know this piece won’t be there for long. I’m one of the Halloween geeks, so I can’t wait to see what the new house looks like all spooked up!!! Have a great week.
Christy says
Thanks, Debbie! We weren’t sure how we were going to do this house up for Halloween, but it looks pretty darn good so far! Still have some tweaking to do! 🙂 XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Love the dresser and the stripes! (and your nice, bright new photo area!! 😉 ) Can’t wait to see your Halloween goodness…you always do it so good! xo
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy!! I still need to figure out the best time of day to shoot in this house! We weren’t sure we were going to get it out this year, but we decided to go for it on Monday. Still have some tweaking to do, but it is almost done! XOXO

Christy says
Thanks, Linda! We have had a ball putting it together…still not quite finished, but I’ll be sure to share it when it’s done! XOXO

That basket looks so cute on top of the dresser! The dresser came out great! I had a dresser similar to that years ago, now I wish I had kept it. Good job!
Christy says
Thank you, MaryJean! I’m excited to have those baskets to use as props now. These simple dressers paint up so nicely, so when I see one I grab it! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
Much cuter now! That’s going to fly out of the booth, no doubt.
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie! I hope so! 🙂
Julie Briones says
The dresser looks great, Christy. And the background doesn’t look bad, at all… it kinda looks like a nursery. 🙂 Looking forward to seeing what you do for Halloween at your new place!
Christy says
Thanks, Julie! I think I am just used to the contrast of the wood doors from my house since I took most of my pics in front of them maybe? We are still working on our Halloween décor, but it is almost done. It has been fun decorating a new house! XOXO
Cyndy says

Christy says
Thanks, Kelly! I’m so happy to hear you enjoy my makeovers! XO
JudyCinNC says
I really love the stripes -it adds such character to an otherwise very plain dresser.
Are the old pulls like an antique brass? I need 10 of those old pulls for something I am making over so it will match the other furniture in the room. The piece currently has shiney brass. Please do not say you tossed them. Thanks for the consideration. Can we talk?
Christy says
Thanks, Judy! I sent you an email to the address you provided regarding the pulls. 🙂
JudyCinNC says
Good morning Christy – I never got your email about the pulls. Thanks from me to you Judy C
Christy says
Hi Judy! I resent the message to the email address you provided. I included a close up photo of one of the pulls. It does look like they could be brass. You are welcome to them for the cost of shipping. If you are interested and do not get my second email message, email me directly at christykjames@cox.net and I can reply with the photo there. 🙂
At Rivercrest Cottage says
Seems your tips always come just when I need them! I’m thinking of redoing some knobs and was fearful of messing them up. After reading your post, I feel confident I can do that “feel” test and get perfect results.
Christy says
So glad to hear it! You can definitely do it! XOXO
