Sweet friends, today I am sharing my first holiday project of the season!! I’m joining the Seasonal Simplicity Series hosted by my dear friend, Krista of The Happy Housie! Today I and several talented friends are all sharing DIY projects you can do for the holidays. You’ll find links to my friends’ projects at the bottom.
The weather here has finally decided to cool down, so I am actually starting to get excited about the holidays!!
Of course, y’all know I looked to my latest haul to see what I could transform to participate in this fun tour, and I chose this mirror:
It was on clearance at the thrift store for $6.98. I rarely pass up a good deal on a mirror, especially one on clearance at the thrift store! When I found this one, I figured at the very least I could turn it into a chalkboard for my booth, but for this project, I decided to keep it as a mirror.
Here is how I added some Ho Ho Holiday charm to it:
Fun, right?
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I love pops of red for my own Christmas decor, so I chose to paint the frame of this mirror in Honky Tonk red by Dixie Belle:
As you can see, I removed the mirror first. That way I could paint the backside as well so the mirror would reflect the red instead of the original wood finish.
I wanted a black waxed finish for the frame, and since I didn’t have any black wax on hand, I mixed some clear wax with black gilding wax to get a black wax:
I applied it with a clean soft cloth to seal my paint finish:
To create the faux etched lettering on the mirror, I found this pretty Christmas design in the Silhouette Store HERE. If you own a Silhouette Machine, you can access their online store that has endless designs that you can purchase and download. This one cost me 50¢. I’ve had several people ask me to share how I use my Silhouette, and while I have shared how I upload my own designs in the past HERE, the software continues to change. I encourage you to check out YouTube as there are a ton of tutorials on using your Silhouette.
It took a little patience to apply the cut-out to my mirror:
I used a 12″ X 24″ cutting mat and printed out the design in two pieces since it was so large. I like to use contact paper since I’m so cheap. Transfer paper makes this an easier project as well, but I was out.
Once I had my design where I wanted it and made sure the rest of my mirror was covered, I sprayed in the design with Rustoleum Frosted Glass Spray:
I applied two light coats, allowing the first one to dry before applying the second. Then I removed the contact paper immediately.
If you don’t own a silhouette, a stencil will work as well. Spray Loctite Spray Adhesive to the back of the stencil to hold it firmly in place.
I added the mirror back to the frame and that was it!
From clearance thrift store mirror to brand new Christmas decor!

That is so beautiful now!! I LOVE how that turned out, such a pretty red. So surprised at the red, but I think it is perfect for Christmas. I wonder if your keeping this for yourself or taking it to your booth. If your keeping it I would love to see where you use it in your home. You inspire me every single time I read one of your post, and I am so thankful for you and your inspiration!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Mary! I think I might just have to keep this one! I hope you have a wonderful day, my sweet friend! XOXO

Your mirror is a great kickoff for Christmas.

Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much, Carolyn! Thank you!! XOXO
Tracy says
Very pretty & festive. Does the etched glass paint wash of the stencil?
Christy says
Thank you, Tracy! I haven’t used the spray with a stencil, but my guess would be no. XO
Patricia Wilson says
I love your mirror. So pretty. You’re like me in the fact that when you see something you can always visualize what it can become. Just like I see a greeting card in everything. Thanks for sharing!

Super festive and easy! I’m beginning to think I should have replaced my original cricut with the silhouette instead of the Maker. Looking at your link, there are so many cute projects available-CHEAP, way more than I’ve found on cricut design space. Plus the machine is much cheaper! 🙁 Maybe I should ask Santa for one this year! lol
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon! I used to have a Cricut back when they still used cartridges. I do love my silhouette now though! I say add it to your Christmas list LOL! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy! I love this red mirror.

Christy says
Thank you so much, Ange! I’m so glad you like this one! XOXO
Cate says
Oh my gosh, I LOVE this!! I feel sad that I don’t have a Silhouette! This is one of the prettiest things I’ve seen in a long time using a mirror. If I had the way to do it, I would immediately go out and look for a mirror that was “just right”. Great job!
Christy says
I’m so glad you like it, Cate! Thank you! There are so many beautiful things you can create with a silhouette, but I think you could do this with a stencil as well! XOXO
Patty says
Absolutely beautiful, Christy!! I love the way you think! I hope you keep it – this one is too special to sell:)
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Patty! I think I might have to keep this one! X ex L

I look forward to seeing what’s next.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Michelle! I’m so glad you found me! XOXO
KATHY BINKLEY says
Oh wow Christy, I wasn’t expecting that beautiful red because your colors are more of a soft pallet but I must admit, how beautiful. So pretty and it really pops. Do you only spray in the stencil the etch spray because it looks like you only covered alittle of the mirror with the tape. I would love to make one like that for my mantel. Thank you so much for sharing
Christy says
I’m so glad you like it, Kathy! Thank you! It is definitely out of my normal color palette, but so pretty for Christmas! Yes, I only sprayed in the stencil and covered the outer edges with the tape. XOXO
Denise - Salvaged Inspirations says
Love this holiday mirror and can’t wait to see what you do with that adorable table!
Christy says
Thank you, Denise!! It was so fun to work on a Christmas project!! XOXO
Kimberly Wollmer says
May I ask why you used the black wax? Does it add a bit of black texture? It’s hard to tell on my computer monitor. Love this!
Christy says
Thank you, Kimberly! I was hoping to add a little depth to the red. It is a very subtle difference. XO
Rhonda Hallstrom says
So Cute! We love Mirrors!
Christy says
Thank you, Rhonda! You rock the mirrors! XOXO
Sandra says
I really like this….I wonder if Michael’s sells the adhesive…..my Goodwill doesn’t have sales…ever. keep up the good ideas.
Christy says
Thank you, Sandra! Our Goodwill marks things down if they’ve been sitting too long. I’m surprised this mirror didn’t sell…even at $9.98 it was a good deal! XOXO
