Hello, beautiful friends! I am SO close to being DONE with my latest Haul!! Only TWO pieces left!!
Can you believe I started with all this??
The piece I’m sharing today is a quick and easy makeover. When I originally found it, I figured I would share it with a smalls post. However, it got buried in the garage and I kept forgetting about it!
Stay tuned after because I have a fun BONUS makeover to share today as well!
Today’s makeover is this pretty magazine rack I picked up at the thrift store for only $5:
After vacuuming away any dust and giving it a quick wipe down, I pulled out one of my favorite custom paint color mixes.
I pulled out this gorgeous aqua color I had originally mixed for this chair:
It’s a mix of 40% The Gulf, 40% Duck Egg Blue, and 20% Cotton to lighten it a little.
(Don’t overthink that… half Gulf, half Duck Egg, and a good splat of Cotton 🙂 )
I got right to painting this magazine rack with it, purposely not covering the entire surface completely:
And that was it! Technically, Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paints do not require a sealer. As long as you give them adequate cure time before regular use (about three weeks), you will have a long lasting, durable finish. But, the finish is very flat. If you like that look, great, but I love a softer finish with a bit of sheen, so I always follow up with a sealer.
This magazine rack didn’t need it though as the flat finish looks great on this piece!
Shortest. How-to. Ever.
The After
Here is how this cutie looks in its pretty new color!
Cute, eh?
Although, instead of using it for magazines, how about as a spare TP holder??
Luckily, this magazine rack didn’t have a divider down the center, so that worked out great!
A fun addition to any coastal home!
And not painting the entire surface gives this a bit of a chippy look…
You could also use it to store a few of your favorite books:
I’m liking the TP idea though!
BONUS MAKEOVER!
And here is that bonus makeover I promised!
I’ve included a couple of affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
One of my friends in the neighborhood is moving next month, and she reached out to me last week to see if I wanted to look through some things she no longer wanted. Um…yes, please!
One of the things she was letting go of was this set of prints:
I thought maybe I could paint the frame of the beachy one and take it to my booth, but the other one was a bit weird because the girl appeared to have no face.
Then, I got in my order of BRAND NEW transfers from Redesign (Find them in my Etsy shop HERE!), and I knew exactly what I would do with these frames!
Getting started
I started by cutting the paper on the back along the frame to keep it neat and clean, and then removing the staples (with this handy tool) that were holding the prints in place:
Once I removed the prints from the frame, I separated the mat from the prints. They were glued together, so I had to pull them apart to separate them.
Paint
Then, I painted the backs of the original prints in Cotton. I went across on the first coat and then up and down on the second coat:
This gave my surface a linen-like look once it dried. And yes, that is cardboard!
I also gave the mats a couple of coats of White Rustoleum spray paint to freshen them up.
The Transfer
I chose this new Lavender Bunch Middy transfer:
Redesign is embracing the lavender lately, and I am here for it!
I cut all the pieces apart and played around a bit until I got what I thought was a frame-worthy arrangement:
Because my painted surface was just cardboard, I wasn’t sure how the transfers would do, but they adhered beautifully!
Painting the Frames
For the Frames, I chose this gorgeous purple from the Terra Clay Line called Wisteria Mist:
I painted two coats and let it dry overnight before sealing with Clear Coat in Satin using a small brush:
The Terra clay dries very light, but will darken again some once sealed.
See more about Terra Clay paint in this makeover.
I added the prints back to my frame and secured them with my Logan Point Driver:
Making the backs pretty!
To make the backs pretty and ready to sell, I covered them with brown Kraft paper.
To do that, I added Matte Mod Podge to the entire frame with a chip brush…
Then, I lined the paper up flush with one of the sides and smoothed it across the surface.
To make it easier to trim away from the other three edges, I ran the side of a screw driver along the edge. Then I used a razor blade to cut away the excess (handle with care or use an exacto knife):
You could sand it away also.
I added a sawtooth hanger to the center, top of each for hanging and this makeover was complete!
THe After
It is SO easy to update outdated prints with something fresh and new using transfers!
How cute would these be in a bathroom? Or a bedroom?
I photographed these without the glass so you can see them better without the reflection, and so you can see how vibrant the transfers are:
I added it back before sealing up the backs.
And how pretty is this Wisteria Mist color?
It’s very similar to the color I mixed up for this gorgeous dresser last year.
With over 130 transfers in my shop, there are SO many possiblities! And, I only used a small portion for this project! I still have a ton of pieces left!
Thank you to my sweet neighbor, Rosalee, for looking out for me!
I shared another set of frames that became art with transfers HERE if you missed them!
I only have one piece left. It is this final frame:
I have zero ideas for it yet, but I’m hoping an idea comes to mind!
UPDATE: I came up with something!! See how cool it is HERE!!
If you missed the last frame I repurposed and shared on Tuesday, you can see that HERE!
Have a lovely weekend, dear friends!!

Oh my I Love both of these makeovers! The magazine rack is so much better as a spare TP holder than magazines. What a pretty color. The frames with the lavendar are amazing. I love the lavendar, and I love the color you used on the frames. Great transformations, and also great inspiration for me!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I love lavender and I was excited to use that transfer…so glad those prints were given to me…they worked great! Have a wonderful weekend, my friend! XOXO
Janis says
Ooh! Christy! Beautiful new prints. I love all things purple.
On that last frame, it is such a pretty edge! Maybe a lovely summer drink tray? Or I can butt out too, lol!
Christy says
Thank you, Janis! And I always appreciate ideas! This frame is quite large though…but I do have an idea in mind yay! XOXO

Christy, love all your creative projects!!!! The magazine rack turned out so cute!!! I agree, it’s perfect for storing extra TP. Now all I have to do is find one like it to paint and store my TP. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, techniques, and incredible projects.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Kathy! It really is so cute for TP! Makes me want to keep it lol…but of course I want to keep all the things ha ha! XOXO
Jackie C says
Oh wow, I really love both these makeovers! I especially love the idea of tp storage!
Christy says
Thanks, Jackie! Isn’t that such a cute magazine rack…perfect for TP! XOXO
Cecilia says
Oh yeah, those turned out great! I’m with you – I like the magazine holder as a tp holder. Great idea! The new “art” looks wonderful too. Haha, laughing at your comment about the girl with no face…it’s an artist trick to have just the suggestion of facial features in a painting. Properly done, it works. Not so much in that one, lol. I like the linen look you achieved on the mat. I have lots of framed prints I got from my mil. She’s cleaning out. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them. The frames might work for my artwork but I’m not sure. However, you’re giving me all sorts of ideas! Have a great weekend!
😊Cecilia
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! Yeah…this print is giving me a little bit of a creepy vibe ha ha! It’s nice of your MIL to pass along what she doesn’t want…hopefully there’s some treasures in there! XOXO
