Hello amazing friends!! I’ve got a pretty one for y’all today! It’s a painted dresser with transfer makeover in a color I’ve never used on furniture before in the almost ten years I’ve been blogging!!
I’m also joining my Furniture Fixer Upper crew today, so not only do I have a fabulous furniture makeover for you, so do three of my favorite treasure maker friends as well. Be on the lookout for their makeovers at the bottom.
Today’s dresser started as this pretty lady:
One of my dear local readers, purchased this dresser here from me, and in exchange for delivering it to her, she said she had a dresser for me.
I was so pleasantly surprised to see this pretty dresser awaiting me when we got there! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
The prep
I began this makeover with a good cleaning with White Lightning. Just add one TBSP to a half gallon of warm water.
Dixie Belle’s applicator pads are covered in soft terrycloth and are perfect for this step…
Once everything was clean, I swapped my water out for clean water and gave it another wipe down to remove any residue. White Lightning is a cleaner and deglosser, so gloves are recommended.
This is all the prep most pieces need when using chalk paint. See my chalk painting tutorial HERE.
However, because this piece had a red tint to it, I decided to be cautious and go ahead and prime it with clear BOSS to prevent any potential bleed-through issues:
It goes on milky and will dry clear on lighter or unsealed woods, but it dries to a very slight haze on darker pieces…
It comes in a clear formula, white, and gray. I use the white the most because I use white paint often, but for today’s project, I didn’t want the white BOSS to show through when I sanded.
I allowed it to dry overnight before painting. Proper dry time is key to its success!
Paint
Any guesses as to the color I used for this dresser??
Did you guess purple??
I have this gorgeous transfer that I have really been wanting to use on something:
There are three purples in Dixie Belle’s Chalk Mineral Paint line, but none were exactly what I was wanting for this piece.
I decided to mix a custom color using half Mason Dixon Gray and half Lucky Lavender:
I got a gorgeous subtle lavender that I call Dusty Lavender!
If you missed the announcement, all 64 Chalk Mineral Paint colors are now available in 4 oz sizes making it easier on the budget to mix custom colors!
It actually covered beautifully in just one coat, but I did give it two coats:
(Those mini furniture dollys are fantastic for painting furniture…I found them on Amazon HERE.)
Once the paint was dry, I sanded everything smooth with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old sanding sponge:
I had a request for a Lyla sighting, so here ya go!
She’s healthy and happy and thinks I brought this in the house just for her!
I actually brought it into my office so I could stay up and work on the transfer.
Adding the transfer
This transfer is by Redesign and it is called Vigorous Violet. You can find it in my shop HERE! I only ended up using half of it on this dresser.
To make it easier to apply, I laid the dresser on its back:
I ended up cutting it in sections to make it easier to apply. I cut the first drawer and applied it by using the included burnishing tool.
Then for the piece between the drawers, I found it easier to cut that section into smaller pieces since this dresser has a curve to it…
It’s pretty easy to match it up to the piece next to it after it is cut.
I also had to be sure the strip I cut for those areas was wide enough to cover it with all the ridges.
Seal and Protect
To seal this piece, I used my go-to sealer for furniture pieces, Clear Coat in Satin. I applied it with the blue sponge which makes it super easy:
I’ve been cutting mine to give it a flat edge, so I can get right into those inside edges…just the slightest amount needs to be removed…
I gave everything two coats of the Clear Coat.
Painted Dresser with Transfer
The After
Here is how this pretty lady looks now!
I absolutely love this muted lavender color!
I decided to keep the original pulls because I really like this style.
These just got a couple of sprays of Rustoleum’s Champagne Mist:
(Oopsie blurry pic…that’s pretty much how my vision is these days ha ha!)
I thought the painted pulls added just a touch of bling.
This transfer is just gorgeous!
I know y’all like to see what I do with the drawers, but these were immaculate inside, so I didn’t do a thing to them…
Plus, I didn’t have any fabrics on hand that would compliment this pretty color.
I did tape everything off neatly though as I like to have all clean edges!
And here you can see how well the transfer covered over all the ridges for one seamless image:
Pretty!
I hope y’all enjoyed this makeover today!
I loved playing with color for a change! And thank you, Cheryl, for giving me such a sweet dresser to love on!
Don’t forget my friends have makeovers to share today too!

I’ve seen a lot of stunning transformations with transfers, but this is THE best one I’ve ever seen. Being more of a fan of decoupage I’ve never bought any transfers before, but this incredible piece has convinced me to give it a try. Thank you Christy, for your inspiration.
Christy says
Oh wow! Thank you so much, Sherin! I truly appreciate that, and I am so thrilled you’re feeling inspired to give transfers a try! XOXO

Denise Cox says
I’m utterly speechless! You continue to outdo yourself. This is such a true beauty! I have fallen in love and if I lived close by I would swoop her up. Purple is my favorite favorite color. The chest was a beauty to begin with. But the “dusty lavender” you concocted (I love it) , along with yet another stunning transfer, sealed the deal. You have such an eye for knowing how to arrange a stencil. AMAZING! If I had a list of Top 10, this gal would be in the top 5…🙃😉!!! You go girl…lol 😘😝
Christy says
Aww you are the sweetest, Denise! Thank you, my friend! This piece has me crushing on purple for sure…I just couldn’t envision any other color with this beautiful transfer! XOXO
Petra says
Well I’m super impressed, and I did not guess lavender – I thought maybe yellow 🙂 and I couldn’t remember if you’d painted anything in yellow! However…this piece is lovely and also particularly lovely was spotting Lyla hiding in the drawer section – she’s such a beautiful cat 🙂 Have a lovely weekend, I’m off for a very long drive, from the top of Australia to the bottom – will take quite a while!!!
Christy says
Aww thank you, my friend! I don’t believe I’ve used yellow either? I will have to add that to my list ha ha! I don’t catch many photos of Lyla while I’m working because I’m usually in the garage, but I brought this one inside. Of course, she though I did it just for her! Safe travels and enjoy your trip!! XOXO
Julie A. Henry says

Christy says
Thank you, Julie! You too!! XOXO

CeCe says
I love what you done to the Dresser. As I looked at it I have the same Dresser and other pieces that match in one of our guest bedrooms. The set was my Grandparents and I always loved playing in that bedroom at grandparents house. I felt like a Queen in that room with the big Poster Bed. As I got older I ask for it and when the time come I received it. I love it and memories come flowing back when I am in the bedroom in our home.
Thanks for all the pieces you transfer. I get some great ideas.
CeCe
Christy says
Thank you, CeCe! How wonderful that you have those pieces that remind you of cherished memories! XOXO

Cecilia says

I’m so impressed how you managed to cut it to fit the curves and also attached each section so well. Wow !!

Vickie Rider says
very pretty, my first guess was orange, still don’t remember if you’ve done orange. Then my second guess was purple, was pretty sure I hadn’t seen you do it. then I thought it had to be red. I should have stopped guessing at purple, your work is always beyond nice. I always look forward to seeing what your next project is.
Christy says
I appreciate that so much, Vickie, thank you! Those were all great guesses! I’ve never done orange and I’ve only done one piece in red and it was a Christmas chair ha ha! XOXO

Denise says
Absolutely gorgeous! I don’t know what else to say. I love it!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Denise!! XOXO
Laura says
Beautiful piece, Christy! By any chance would using the White Lightning and Clear Boss, then using a latex paint work on old dark stained wide plank paneling? Would this prevent bleed through? Really don’t want to use Zinsser Cover Stain Primer because of the intense fumes. Not much ventilation in the area where the walls need to be redone.
Christy says
Hi Laura! I think you definitely could, but for a large area like walls, I think it would not be very budget-friendly to go that route as the BOSS is pricier than what you can buy in a gallon can at Home Depot. You will have to contend with the smell, but I think it is a better option for a larger area like that. XOXO
Joanne says
Awesome job!
Christy says
Thank you Joanne! XOXO
Ivana says
I think this is the best thing I’ve seen you do!
Just beautiful!!💗
Christy says

Rebecca Payne says
AWESOME JOB! GORGEOUS!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Rebecca! XOXO
Laura says
You are so meticulous! Here is a question for you: when you spray a pull/handle with a moveable part (like today’s dresser) how do you make sure the moving part gets sprayed? Sometimes I get goobers where the handle touched the backplate. Many thanks!
Christy says
Thank you, Laura! I sprayed them with the handle part up first and then let that completely dry, then I sprayed them with the handle down, if that makes sense. XOXO
Connie says
That lavender dresser is the most beautiful piece you have ever done. So much work and it shows. Thank you for sharing. Had spinal surgery and have not followed for a while but I’m back.
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Connie! I am so glad you’re back and that you are on the mend! XOXO

Laura
Christy says
Thank you so much, Laura! This is one of those pieces that I won’t mind having hanging around my booth for a while ha ha, but of course, selling it is the goal! XOXO
Addie says
A beautiful surprise!!! Would be the star of the room.
Question for you: Since this color is so specific, if years down the road you change the room up….is it hard to get the color off? To remove that kind of paint?
I can’t believe how clean those drawers are…like brand new!!!
Good job!!
Christy says
Thank you, Addie! It isn’t hard to remove chalk paint at all with a little sanding. And yes, the inside was immaculate! XOXO
Carol Iskenderian says
Oh my gosh Christy, this lavender dresser is stunning!! You make it look so easy but I know there is a great deal of skill required. I love this project so much and when I ever feel like I can do something like this too I will attempt it. I so enjoy seeing all of your projects. Thank you for sharing your work. Carol I.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Carol! This is totally doable! As you saw, I even cut the transfer smaller in areas and adhered it in pieces. 🙂 XOXO

Sandra Walby says
Absolutely beautiful! I love your work!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Sandra! XOXO
Debra Hubbs says
That is absolutely perfect and gorgeous! That color is made for that transfer. Growing up my bedroom was lavender. How I would have loved this. I have the same style piece in a vanity I’ve been doing. Had trouble with the gilding wax sticking to the hardware. I will try this metallic spray instead so thank you for that. So glad DB now offers all colors in the small jars! I suggested that ages ago when I saw many painting canvas art with them. Also, Lyla is so pretty.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Debra! I just couldn’t envision any other color with this gorgeous transfer! My room growing up was green ha ha! It was my favorite color at the time. And yes, I was so excited to see the chalk paint available in the smaller sizes…I’ve already sold a bunch! Thanks for the love on Lyla…she’s such a sweet girl! Have a fantastic holiday weekend, my friend! XOXO
Debra Hubbs says
You’re welcome. You have a great weekend also.
Christy says
Thank you!
Kay says
This lavender you created is beautiful! I know this will sell quickly because it is unusual and the transfer is perfect for this dresser. I need to try a transfer on a small chest I am painting, and I might use the paint as you suggested.
Christy says
Thank you, Kay! Transfers are so fun to create with! XOXO

Christy says
Oh wow, thank you so much, Annamarie! It will be for sale in my booth, local pick up only. I’m in Virginia Beach, VA. XOXO
Patty says
Absolutely gorgeous!! I think it has all been said above – we are all in agreement about this piece – color is perfect. Of course, seeing sweet little Layla makes it even better. She is a little love❤️
Christy says
Aww thank you, Patty! I am usually working in the garage, but I brought this piece inside to my office to apply the transfer, and she thought it was just for her ha ha! She is such a sweet girl! XOXO
Robin says
Such a refreshing change, Christy! I have a tiny sticky question, though. Since you were going to paint the dresser why didn’t you use DB Mudd to fill in the missing corner on the front foot? Maybe it doesn’t work on a corner? (We can always say it adds ‘character’ to the piece, lol.)
Christy says
Thank you, Robin! You can use Mud on the corners like that and had I wanted to get absolute perfection there, I could have busted out the Bondo, but I didn’t think it would detract from the final look at all, and it is barely noticeable…less work too lol. XOXO
Caye Cooper says
PERFECT!!—as always! Kudos.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Caye!! XOXO
Deanna says
OMG! Stunning! I can’t stop looking at it. You inspire me to try new things every day. 🙂

Oh my gosh, I love that so much, Deanna! Thank you!! XOXO
Lizzy says
Oh my gosh! Those 2 colors mixed together turned out gorgeous. It’s an outstanding piece! Pinned.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Lizzy! I will definitely use this color combination again! XOXO
Jeanne says
I’m commenting two weeks in a row which I don’t do. Ha!
Christy, you choked me up on this one. When I saw the original picture, I wondered why you would paint over a pretty good looking dresser. Then when I saw what you did, I realized you made it look even better. I knew my mom would absolutely love it, if only she was still with us. Brought tears to my eyes. It’s truly perfect!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Jeanne! Pieces like this that are in such beautiful condition are the most difficult to take a brush to, so I better have a good plan ha ha! I’m touched that this made you think of your sweet mama. XOXO
Marietta says
“Be still, my beating heart.”
Christy says
I love that response, Marietta!! XOXO

Robyn Wright says
Christy! That is BEAUTIFUL!!
Christy says
Thank you, Robyn!! XOXO
Susan says
This dresser is literally the match to my dresser (in the original finish). The bedroom set I have is over 100 years old. It was my great-grandparents set. I love the original but your transformation is beautiful. And I’m a big fan of purple too!!
Christy says
Oh wow! I absolutely love this style, and you are so blessed to have your great-grandparents’ set! I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t want to paint yours…it is really lovely in the original finish too. Thanks, Susan! XOXO
Karen Moore says
OMG!! I had my doubts when you said purple, but it is stunning. Perfect for the transfer and the champagne pulls were gorgeous.
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Karen! Purple is a stretch for me lol! XOXO
LORRI says
Well you can tell by the comments of everyone that we Love the color and the transfer you chose.😍 Stunning, breathtaking, gorgeous I could go on and on..lol…
I have one question when you paint..do you have to sand between the coats of the chalk paint? Then do you have to sand when you have put on your 2 coats of paint? When sanded do you sand until you have some powder from your piece? I did paint with Cotton Chalk on a old luggage..and it chipped on the edge after a little time. Grr. I painted it again..you couldn’t see it but hate doing things 2x.
Thanks for all your ideas.😻
Christy says
Thank you so much, Lorri! It was a treat to try something totally new! When I paint with chalk paint, I do not sand in between coats. I just sand after the final coat to smooth everything out. When you do that, you can sand lightly as to only smooth the finish or you can be a bit more heavy handed if you want to distress the edges. Did you seal your paint finish? Wax works wonderfully to seal painted luggage and it will protect it from chipping. The paint should fully cure in about three weeks, so you want to use care with your pieces until then, I hope this helps! XOXO
LORRI RAUSCHER says
I used the Satin Clear coat not the wax and I didn’t wait 3 weeks ..eeks..I put a candle on it and when I removed the candle it sort of stuck.. lesson learned..

I haven’t tried the clear coat on suitcases, but I imagine it should have been okay. The wax works really super on them though, and yep, you just want to use them with care until they cure. It is a learning process for sure! XO

Hi Christy
This dresser went from nice to absolute WOW, GORGEOUS!!!
I’ve never seen such a beauty in all my viewing of Before and After!!
I’m redoing my dresser and my mom and I loved Lilacs, so, now I’m thinking of doing something like this.
May I ask you a question? You wrote,
I did tape everything off neatly though as I like to have all clean edges!
Is it special tape that you use to do this?
Thank you and have a great week!!
Pam
xo🥰

Thank you so much, Pam!! It would be lovely to recreate something with your mom in mind. My favorite tape for painting is FrogTape for delicate surfaces. You can find it on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/3MbJCaG and The Home Depot has it also! XOXO
