Hello amazing friends and welcome to one of my very favorite days of the month, Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday! Not only do I have a fabulous makeover for y’all today, so do four of my favorite treasure-maker friends! That’s five great makeovers for the price of one!
I had planned to share a smaller project today, but I ended up getting my desk finished and I was too excited to share it to wait!
It is not exactly what one would call trash, but it was showing its wear for sure. I actually considered replacing it. I’ve included a couple of affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
It originally started out like this before I painted it several years ago:
Then I painted it in Behr’s Cottage White back in 2013:
But more recently it was looking a little worse for wear:
And it really needed a refresh to go with my new office space.
And a refresh it got!
Right????
I am so pleased with how it came out!
First of all, it got a fresh new paint job in Behr’s Bit of Sugar that I made into DIY chalk paint. (Recipe with video HERE. You can find my chalk painting tutorial HERE.)
I sealed it all with MMS furniture wax.
Then I decided I needed to cover that ugly bulletin board that was on the back, so I found this pretty fabric at Hobby Lobby:
That back piece came off with just a few screws, so I was able to stretch the fabric taut across the bulletin board and hot glue it in place all around the edges where it wouldn’t be seen. Then I screwed it back in place.
I found that fun block calendar at Hobby Lobby on the same trip.
If you look in the reflection of the computer screen, you can see I still have a few boxes stacked in the corner of my office!
When I was completely done and setting it up for photos, I was trying to decide what to put in the upper cabinets. They still had the glass in them so you could see what was in there. That’s when I had the idea to switch out the glass door panels for bead board like I did with this very dated hutch.
They were just held in place by these rubber pieces that I was able to pull out with pliers:
The beadboard was left over from when I added it to the back of my son’s cheap Target shelves. (I should share those!)
I used my Ryobi circular saw to cut them:
Yep in my socks.
I had forgotten all about this saw until we were cutting all the plywood to raise the floors. It cut those larger pieces in nice straight cuts and it is very petite so it is easy to handle. I need to remember I have this the next time I make a batch of chalkboards for my booth!
Ten minutes later I had new doors! I used the original rubber pieces that were holding the glass to hold these panels in place…
Now I have more much-needed closed storage space!
I also replaced the knobs.
I used a mix of glass knobs and pretty mirrored ones, both from Hobby Lobby:
And how about that chair?
It is pretty, but so hard it almost put my butt to sleep. Thank goodness I don’t have to sit in it for long periods while I blog ha ha!
This is one of my dining room chairs that I redid just for the photo. I LOVE my desk chair (See it HERE.), but it is going to be a bit more work to redo and doesn’t go too well with the desk at the moment.
This is how I am going to redo all the dining room chairs though. I found this fabric at Hobby Lobby also and I thought it would work well in my new dining room. What do you think?
Here is what the rest of the chairs still look like:
Only they look a lot more yellow in real life. One down, five to go. Grrr…
The desk won’t be staying in front of this window. I didn’t want you to see the feature wall yet so I moved it here for photos. I’m hoping to share a sneak peek of it on Thursday! I just love how it turned out!
It’s miles from where it started!
Oh and here is a peek at the curtains I chose for this room:
I also chose these for the dining room. I found them on clearance at HomeGoods. In person, they have a pretty silver thread that runs though them that was hard to capture in photos. The pretty florally print ones I shared a peek of not too long ago were just too skimpy at the windows.
And of course you can see our new floors as well. I still need to add the quarter round trim in both rooms.
These spaces are surely coming together though! Can’t wait to share more!
In the mean time, check out what my friends have been up to!
I’ll see y’all on Thursday with the makeover of this $3 thrift store lamp:
UPDATE: See how this lamp got a pretty makeover HERE now! 🙂
Have a fantastic day!

Shazaaaam, Christy! Not only refreshed, but oh so chic. I love it! Your home is coming along wonderfully. I love my little circular saw too…endless uses. 🙂
Christy says
Thanks, Larissa! I am so glad I didn’t go buy a new one! And yep the house is coming right along! XOXO
Christina in FL says
Good morning Christy, I adore your desk. 🙂 The beadboard is perfect in the doors and the new hardware… beautiful jewelry.
I adore your rolling office chair. 🙂 I suppose you mean you will have to paint and recover it. Nuts, I love that fabric. 🙂
Have a great rest of your week.
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! I do love the fabric on my desk chair as well. I’m not quite sure where I’ll go with that yet! We shall see! XOXO
Nancy @ Slightly Coastal says
It turned out beautiful! I do prefer the new color over the last one but wouldn’t have felt that way unless I had seen it. The new color is so soft and feels more luxurious…if a piece of furniture can feel luxurious. Changing out the bulletin board and updating the doors really did make a huge difference. Even the chairs…paint and fabric. Always amazing.
Christy says
Thank you, Nancy! I am so happy I decided to give it another go. It really is amazing what paint and fabric can do! XOXO
sonya says
I love this look, I have gotten many great ideas from you, but this one could use a pop of color to warm it up a little bit, there is too much white.
Christy says
Thanks, Sonya…it is a bit washed out in front of the window…so much so that the images almost look black and white. It will make more sense though when you see the feature wall it will be sitting against. 🙂
Diane Moody says
GORGEOUS desk makeover, Christy! I love every single thing. And what a brilliant idea to cover the back area in fabric. But tell us about the indirect lighting you used. That’s the first thing that caught my eye!
Christy says
Thank you, Diane! I wish I knew how to add lighting, but it is simply where the light is shining through from a small opening at the bottom of the corkboard. 🙂
Cecilia says
Oh yes! Much better. I love the fabric that covers the bulletinboard – really transforms the back! The chair is pretty too. I don’t envy you having more to do. 😉 but it will be so worth it. Love the curtains…ok, I love everything you’ve done, lol! Pretty!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Cecilia! I was thinking that redoing that one chair wasn’t so bad…maybe I’ll just do one at a time here and there and eventually they’ll get done lol! XOXO
Debra Wise says
Love the desk and the beadboard you added is just a gorgeous bonus. Your home is coming along beautifully! Thanks for sharing and for your inspiration!
Christy says
Thank you, Debra! I sure am glad for that extra hidden storage I got by adding the beadboard. The new house is humming right along, and you know it is always my pleasure to share!! XOXO
Donna says
The desk looks wonderful in her new coat of paint. The other changes, the fabric on the bulletin board and the beadboard to replace the glass make the piece just perfect. * Sigh*, the computer desk I am currently sitting at needs some serious work. Well, let’s be brutally truthful…the whole room needs some serious work…ha!
Changing the subject, I saw on another blog that the homeowners used cove molding instead of shoe molding to finish off the trim. It looked very nice. Enjoy your day. xoxo
Christy says
Thank you, Donna! I am SO happy I decided to give this desk another chance. I know there was nothing really wrong with it, just tired of looking at it I suppose, but not anymore! Maybe your desk could use a little paint love too?? As for the molding, I kept all of the original quarter round that was in the dining room in hopes of staining it darker to match the new floors and reusing it, so I will probably need to keep it consistent in the office too, but I do like the look of the cove molding…thank you for the suggestion! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Looks beautiful! Love the new knobs and so smart to remove the glass, much better!! xoxo
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy! I love having that additional hidden storage!! XOXO
Joan says
You are a champion!!!! Very well done.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Joan! XOXO
Linda Petersen says
Need to add new words to Webster’s Dictionary to describe your talent & inspiration! ???? It’s gorgeous ????! Love the new fabric over the bulletin board areas. ????❤
Christy says
Oh wow thank you, Linda!! XOXO
Kimberly says
Christy, once again you hit it out of the park. I love what one reader said, Christy’s furniture will last forever in many incarnations, lol. I have been getting traction on several projects lately and was feeling pretty smug…until I saw how much you guys have gotten done! Thanks for the challenge!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Kimberly!! Girl, any progress un the right direction is good, be it big or small! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
The first thing I noticed was that fabric on the cork board. Fabulous choice! Love the mirror knobs and the new doors and the socks and the sawhorse ????
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie! The socks and the sawhorse…I’m real fancy like that. 🙂
Karen L Moore says
Love the update. The fabric on the bulletin board is perfect. Really dressed it up.
Christy says
Thank you, Karen! I’m surprised I didn’t think to cover the bulletin board the first time! XOXO
Debbie in TX says
I really love all the work you put into this, and the details make it special. The bulletin board cover and beadboard doors are perfect. The chair and the new hardware really dress it up. My favorite picture is the one of you in your socks! Keepin’ it real!!!! You rock, Christy!
Christy says
Thank you so much, sweet Debbie! I just discovered those were two odd socks this morning when I pulled out the matches lol. One is a small argyle and the other is larger print ha ha! XOXO
Nancy says
I often wonder why some people are born with so much talent and others have to settle for wanna be’s. You are so talented and so willing to share, right down to the last detail. But I wanna be like you. This is beautiful. Would love to find a piece just like it for my computer work. Thank you.
Christy says
Aww thank you for such a sweet comment, Nancy! It is such a pleasure to be able to share…hoping it encourages others to tackle things they never thought they could! XOXO
MaryJean says
Hello Christy,
I love the desk! You did such a great job, as usual! My final day of work is Dec. 15th so I will be starting to work on some furniture of my own after that date, well, that and getting ready for Christmas!
Can I ask you how many times a week do you post? You can get back to me personally if you like.
Christy says
Thank you, MaryJean! I know you are counting the days!! I post every Tuesday and Thursday! 🙂 XOXO
Vicci Noel says
Did you use the same paint on the chair as the desk? All of it looks fantastic! Love it.
Christy says
I sure did, Vicci! Thank you! XOXO
Debbie says
What a pretty update!! I love the fabric on it and the new handles… beautiful!!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Debbie! XOXO
Beth says
Christy I love, love, love this! I wish I could find a piece like this for my studio:) I love how you distressed it and those knobs!!! So jealous!!:)
Christy says
Thank you, Beth! I can’t believe I almost gave up on it…guess I was just tired of looking at it, but not anymore! XOXO
Annie says
Love it! It’s always more inspiring when you have a beautiful space to work in 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Annie! I agree! XOXO
Mary Loveland says
Covering up the cork board made a great whopper of a difference, I was really amazed at the change. I miss the glass in the doors though, made it look more like a womans space. I really liked the new chair the very best but do you suppose there is a way to make an office chair “attractive”?? Could you skirt it? A good office chair is worth its weight in gold and if you could come up with a beauty solution it would be worth a million!
Christy says
Thanks, Mary! I loved the simple glass doors, but I do love the much needed closed storage I gained…all kinds of junk fills those cubbies now lol! As for the chair, this is just one of my dining room chairs I put with the desk for photos. My real desk chair which I LOVE just doesn’t match anymore. It needs to be recovered. I linked to it in the post which you may have missed. 🙂 XOXO
Dianne Gingrich says
Love how it turned out!!
Christy says
Thank you, Dianne! XO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
Christy, I love the new look!! I thought it was good before but the fabric and the beadboard really make it extra special now. I’m a little sad thinking that you might redo your desk chair though- that’s been one of my favorites!
Christy says
Thanks, girl! I’m surprised I never thought to cover the bulletin board the first time…and as for the chair…I know!! It is still in great shape. May keep it as is and swap it out with a dining room chair just for photos ha ha! XOXO
Susan Ronnfeldt says
Love what you did to your desk! You always come up with the best ideas, and are so handy to boot!! Can’t wait to see your office when you get it finished!
Christy says
Thank you SO much, Susan! I am excited to see it coming together! XOXO
Ardith says
You are so talented, you give me constant inspiration! I love the changes to your desk and the dining chairs will be beautiful. Do you have time to sleep?
Christy says
Aww thank you, Ardith! It seems I never stop, huh? I do call it quits at dinner time and relax at night ha ha…this girl needs her beauty sleep! XOXO
Cathy says
All I can say is WOW!!! What a great piece to begin with – love those feet!! Awesome, awesome job!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy!! I was so in love with this desk when I bought it and it has served me well, but I was actually considering replacing it. I am SO happy that I took another chance on it!! XOXO
Marjorie Martinez says
love the transformation. what is the original wood? i have an old oak desk, looking a bit tired and drab, of similar style. should i paint over oak?
Christy says
Thank you, Marjorie! I am not sure what it was originally since it had such a thick factory finish. It is so heavy that I would not be surprised if it was pressed board. This is what I say about paint…don’t ever be afraid to paint because something is made of good wood…if you no longer love a piece and want a fresh new look, paint it! There is also the option to stain your desk a new shade to update it, or restain the top to refresh it, and then paint the base. I love that look too! XO
Ann says
Love the new color on the desk, and love those knobs too. I notice there seems to be a light fixture mounted to the hutch. Would have like more detail about that–how to hide the cord, where to find the fixture. Those available in Home Depot and Lowe’s are all flourescent, and the bulbs show. Thanks!
Christy says
Thank you, Ann! The light you see is actually coming in from the window behind. There are holes in two of those cubbies and along the bottom of the bulletin board that are meant for cords where the light is shining through. 🙂
Carrie says
Wow, amazing transformation! at first my eyes thought I was seeing a window/glass there where your bulletin board is. So many great ideas all pulled together!! I love your desk, you definitely need a comfy chair since your desk is SO inviting! 🙂 Everything else is looking so good too!
Christy says
Thanks, Carrie! Yes I need to decide if I want to recover my actual desk chair…it is super comfy! XOXO
Ashley Brown says
Amazing re-do. Well done!
Christy says
Thanks, Ashley!
Sandi says
The desk looks so beautiful! I love the bead board and the fabric that you added! You continue to amaze me with your talent!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sandi! So happy to hear you like the changes. I have really had fun working on my own furniture pieces for a change! XOXO
Marie says
What a lovely desk space to blog at! Love the addition of the fabric covered bulletin board and the beadboard makes the doors look less officey. Very pretty and Pinned. Looking forward to seeing the feature wall you’ve hinted about and the entire room all put together – I know it’ll be gorgeous.
Christy says
Thank you! I am so relieved to have this space pretty much done. Because I will take most of my photos in here, we only have my desk and the small sofa that came out of our old master in here. Love that I no longer have to move my entire dining set into the kitchen to take photos like I did at the old house! XOXO
