Hello, beautiful people! I’m having a bit of a stay-cation the rest of this week since Brennan is on Spring Break, so today, I’m sharing a painted night table makeover from a couple of years ago that is super sweet!
I came across this night table in excellent condition for $20 at the thrift store:
It’s getting more and more difficult to find nice quality pieces at a decent price, so I grabbed this one right away.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Clean
The first step in any makeover is a good cleaning with White Lightning. I just mix one TBSP of White Lightning with a half gallon of warm water and stir.
White Lightning is a degreaser and a deglosser and gloves are recommended.
I like to use these terrycloth applicator pads as they are perfect for the job, and then I can just toss them in the wash!
Fill Holes
The net step was to fill the holes left by the drawer pulls since I had plans to go with simple knobs instead.
To do that, I enlisted the help of Dixie Mud. One of the things I love about Dixie Mud verses traditional wood filler is that 2/3 of the way through the jar, it is still in great shape, not hard like most wood fillers would be by this point:
I moved the drawers into the warm sunshine and let them completely dry. I did have to add a bit more filler to a couple of the holes as the Mud can sometimes sink a bit in these larger holes as it dries.
Once that was dry, I used my Ryobi Corner Cat sander to smooth them out:
This sander is great for light duty sanding and for reaching hard-to-reach areas. I have the cordless one, but it is also available in a corded version.
I vacuumed away any sanding dust with my shop vac and gave them another wipe down with a clean, soft cloth.
Paint
Then I was ready for paint! I wanted to go feminine with this night table and knew I wanted to use pink.
Dixie Belle has three pinks in their Chalk Mineral Paint line that I considered. Pink Champagne was a bit too light, Tea Rose was a bit too dusty of a pink, and Soft Pink was a bit more pink than I wanted…it is very pink!
I decided to use a custom mix of Soft Pink and Cotton to get a softer color:
This is about two parts Soft Pink to one Part Cotton. After a good stir you can see how it compares to the Soft Pink:
This is more what I have in mind when I think of Soft Pink!
I had originally painted in Soft Pink, so this was one coat over that:
Bleed through
Often, when you sand the original finish, you will get bleed through in those areas when you paint over it.
I knew that would be the case here, so to prevent that, I gave the drawers where I had sanded a coat of White BOSS primer:
As you can see, bleed through did occur through the BOSS, but not to worry. I let that dry overnight, and then came out in my jammies and slippers the next morning and painted like normal. NO bleed through!
** UPDATE** While I do still have regular BOSS in stock, Dixie Belle has switched to the new Bonding BOSS which is not only a stain blocking primer, but also an adhesion primer.
Then, for the sides, I love a sweet stripe, so I added one using 1.88 inch FrogTape in Pink Champagne:
I removed the tape as soon as I applied my second coat of Pink Champagne.
See how I get perfectly measured stripes every time HERE.
Once everything was dry, I sanded very lightly all over with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth, being sure not to sand beneath the paint. I didn’t want any distressing since I wanted a clean, crisp look for this one.
Adding the Hello Baby Transfer
This is the Hello Baby Transfer:
Isn’t it absolutely adorable? I was so excited to use it on something when I ordered it!
Once I opened it, I immediately fell in love with the bunny and set out to add it to this night table.
I did have to cut it into separate pieces to make it work over the different surfaces:
I also added some leaves and flowers to her sweet head:
I kept going adding the florals that came in this set in various places. I was trying hard to add another animal somewhere, but I decided to save the rest for future projects.
Seal
To seal, I used my favorite go-to sealer for furniture, Clear Coat in Satin.
If you haven’t tried the blue sponge applicator to apply sealer yet, I highly recommend it!
I’ve started cutting the edge of mine on both sides lately, so I can get right up against the top and bottom straight edge surfaces.
These can be rinsed and used over and over. I’ll even keep mine wrapped in saran wrap for a week or two in between uses sometimes. It has stayed perfect and ready for the next use.
The After
Ready to see how this pretty in pink night table turned out??
I absolutely love this custom shade of pink!
ALL colors are available in 4oz sizes, so that makes it a bit more affordable to mix your own custom colors!
I love the flowers that came with this set. I do wish there were more though…
And here’s a closer peek at that sweet bunny! I hate that I had to cut her poor face, but it worked out in the end.
I added one of these flowers to the top too…
And how about those stripes?
Stripes are such an easy way to add a little something extra.
I always get asked about the window with the decorative sheet metal in it when I share it.
I did this with some leftover sheet metal my hubby had purchased years ago.
You can see that makeover HERE. I also did a similar makeover on a set of mirrors HERE.
You can find the how-to for that super simple wreath that I made for $7 (without the roses) HERE.
These baskets were thrift store finds that I painted.
Y’all know I love a painted basket!
The Drawers
For the drawers, I decided to paint them in Silk Endless Shore…
They weren’t the prettiest inside and for a sweet baby’s room, I wanted them to be perfect!
Silk paint is the perfect choice for the insides of drawers since they are usually raw wood, so no prep, and the built-in topcoat means no need to seal either!
See all 30 Silk Paint colors HERE.
And, I saved one special floral transfer piece for the top drawer…
And of course I had to change out the hardware. I picked up these simple glass knobs at HomeGoods:
I am so in love with this sweet piece!
I hope y’all didn’t mind seeing it again!

I am adding NEW items all the time…I just recently listed 12 BRAND NEW Belles and Whistles transfers!

Thank you, Kathy! It was too sweet not to be shared again lol. And I sure will, thanks! XOXO

Well I kinda cringed initially seeing how perfect and gorgeous that wood was on this piece………………but, per usual, you knocked it out of the park. I’d much prefer to see a dinged ruined piece be transformed, but I honestly love this one very much. What sweet little girl’s bedroom this will make!
Enjoy your son’s break. I know you will!!
Christy says
Ha ha ME too…it is always harder to take a brush to these pristine pieces. That’s why I often drag home the worst ones lol. I’m glad you enjoyed it though! Thanks, Michele! XOXO

So sweet!

Thank you, Christine! XOXO

Simply beautiful! Love the pink color, the rabbit/flowers transfer, and the beautiful glass knobs. You do a super job renovating these pieces. This nightstand looks a lot like my Kincaid bedroom furniture, and I could paint it, but I’d have to choose something more masculine for my hubby!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Barbara! I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! And yes, I don’t think the hubby would be too keen on the pink ha ha! XOXO
Laurie says
I love this 💕🐇 your attention to detail is amazing. The inside of the drawers are as beautiful as the outside.

Just as cute and sweet now as it was then. Hope somebody is enjoying this in a little girl’s room. Have a good time with Brennan.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Janice! I was actually in my booth the day this sold. The sweetest tween had brought her dad into see it and he bought it for her. I imagined it in a little girl’s room, but she just loved it! XOXO

You are so correct! That nightstand is so sweet. Your attention to detail is absolutely amazing and you have such a good eye for what is really going to bring the piece (or any piece you do) together. It is so very pretty.
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much, Denise, thank you! This was a really fun one to do! XOXO
Donna Christensen says
Have you ever tried to put a sticker on a piece of furniture and then gave it a couple coats of poly? Got the most beautiful hydrangea sticker from dollar stare and was hoping this would work. Love all your work!!
Christy says
Hi Donna! Thank you so much! I have not tried that with a sticker, so I am unsure how to advise on that, I’m afraid. XOXO

Hi Girl,
I had forgotten about this beautiful piece and it is still just that as when I first saw it.
Those glass pulls were made for this piece.
Hope you had a great Easter (I know I am late) Did you get to spend it with your Mom and Dad?
Thanks for helping me with the e-mail, can’t lose track of my Christy💕
Christy says
Thank you, Bonnie! I’m so glad you enjoyed this one again and that you found me in your email woohoo! XOXO

Loved seeing this cute makeover again, Christy. It’s so sweet, like cotton candy! This morning I just happened upon one of your posts from 2016 (July I believe) where you so graciously walked through your first floor showing all of your thrifted finds and your amazing and beautiful reimaginations. One of them was a stool for your kitchen that you scooped up at Lucketts. I love Lucketts – such a fun and unique place. Hope you are enjoying your spring break!
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! Oh yes…that was our old home…that was an oldie for sure! XOXO
Vicki says
Christy, well! The upside of being one of your “older” followers is I’m not sure I remember this one the first time around and absolutely love it! I’m in awe of your mad skills! Your vision and attention to detail is perfect! It also made me happy that you were there when it was bought. Thank you for your great posts!
Christy says
I’m so glad you didn’t miss it the second time around, Vicki, thank you so much! I was so happy to see the joy in that young lady’s face when her Dad told her she could get it! XOXO
