Hi there, amazing friends!! Since I’m working feverishly to get my yard sale stuff together, even though it looks like rain is heading our way on Saturday boohoo, I decided to pull an old favorite out to share today!
I first shared this back in 2016 and it’s been a while since I shared a hutch, so here ya go:
This was one very dated hutch!
I love these older hutches because they have so much charm, but one thing I didn’t find very charming on this one were these plastic amber door panels:
I suspect these were the reason why this piece was marked significantly lower than similar pieces at the thrift store. Not a problem for me!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use. Read my full disclosure here.
I ditched the door panels for beadboard and gave it a fresh new look!
They really gave this pretty piece a cottage feel.
Another dated feature of this hutch was this area for hanging silverware…
I tried my best to whack this shelf out so I could just replace it, but it wasn’t budging. I had to come up with another solution, so instead, I decided to add a piece of molding across the top lip to camouflage it:
That made the slits look a bit like deep dental molding instead, and that worked for me.
This piece has so much more charm in its new coat of white. The original paneling on the back even looks great in white. I used Behr’s Ultra Pure White, straight off the shelf, in flat with my DIY chalk paint recipe for this one. After sanding, everything was waxed with Annie Sloan’s Clear Soft Wax.
See my How to Paint Furniture with Chalk Paint tutorial HERE for more details on painting with chalk paint.
These pretty glass knobs from Hobby Lobby were perfect for the little drawer up top:
I filled in the holes on these bottom drawers so I could attach something prettier than what was there. I used Elmers Wood Filler for that part.
These pulls were also from Hobby Lobby and were perfect:
The insides got a little fabric treatment using Mod Podge in matte …
I also put this on the backs of the beadboard panels in the cupboard doors but didn’t get a picture.
I also scored this wire caddy at the thrift store. It was a great addition to my Farmhouse Kitchen in our old house and it looked pretty here too!
It sits on our built-ins in the living room holding seashells in our new house.
This little enamelware kettle and wire cloche were also thrift store finds, as were all of the ironstone pieces.
I hope you enjoyed this makeover, maybe for the first time, or perhaps as a rerun!
It was definitely worth pulling out to share again!
Oh and did I mention it was only $75?

Thanks so much for stopping by today, Friends! Cross your fingers and toes for me that it doesn’t rain on Saturday!!
I’ll be back with my Trash-to-Treasure girls on Tuesday sharing what I did with this mirror:
See ya then!

Christy, I don’t know if I saw this the first time but I sure enjoyed it this time. 🙂
You know how much I enjoy the white paint. A bit more distressing on this one but it works! Great idea to put the trim on the spoon notches. Very nice touch.
Have a great weekend and hope the yard sale is a soaring success!!
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! I’m so glad you enjoyed it this time around! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Sandra says
Will we get to see pics of your yard sale? Would love to know what you get rid of. It’s supposed to rain in Raleigh as well. Rains every weekend it seems. Fingers crossed for you!
Christy says
Thank you, Sandra! I’ll try to remember to get pictures to share! It is now supposed to rain in the afternoon…hoping it holds out till a bit later! XOXO

I painted my first hutch recently and it was a BEAST! The original owner had painted it with white latex paint without removing the hardware and drawers. Plus I had to replace the back, the top and the hardware and the inside of it smelled like candles and was full of glitter. That was serious blood, sweat and tears. You make yours look like a walk in the park! Or perhaps I was just a glutton for punishment. However it turned into a wonderful farmhouse piece and has gone to a good home! Thanks for sharing!
Christy says
Oh wow…sounds like you totally earned that sale for sure!! I promise mine are not always a walk in the park, but I’ve learned a few things along the way…like to avoid already-painted pieces! Sometimes I still get suckered into a painted piece though if it’s a really good deal. Good for you for sticking with it! XOXO

I have just one word for this makeover: A M A Z I N G! This is a real stunner and your given me new ideas. Thanks for the re-run!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Linda!! XOXO
Linda says
Oh crap! I hate typos! I meant to say ……and you have given me new ideas.
!!!!!!! Now I feel better and don’t appear ignorant! lol
Christy says
Ha ha no worries, my friend! That auto-correct can be evil lol! XOXO
Barb says
You are truly amazing. I wish I had half your energy!!!
Just a thought…. It might be fun to actually use some mismatched old silver spoons in some of the notches.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Barb! That would have been a great solution! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Christy, I would love to paint an old hutch like that. They have such good bones and you made it sparkle. Don’t you just love finding staging material in thrift stores? I’m not sure what a “cloche” is but i love that wired bird thingy. 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! This was one of my favorites for sure! And yes! I love finding great staging pieces in my searches! I forgot I had that bird thingy till I reread this post lol! XOXO

I enjoy seeing all of your transformations of thrift shop purchases. Can you do a blog giving us some of your secret tips of treasure hunting in thrift shops? How do you manage to find items so cheap? I love going to thrift shops, but I have never found great prices like you do. thanks!
Christy says
Thank you, Teresa! I am very lucky to find the great deals that I do, but I also find outrageously priced things…I just don’t buy those so you don’t hear about them lol! We also have a ton of thrift shops in our area so there is more competition maybe, and some are definitely known to be cheaper than others! XOXO

I always see these hutches for sale, or for free, on FB Marketplace. Most people just want them out of their homes. If they saw these makeovers, I bet some of them would think twice! The transformations are beautiful. Btw, I LOVE Behr’s Ultra Pure White. I used it on my shiplap. It’s so crisp, fresh & clean with no undertones.
Christy says
Oh wow…for free? I would snatch them right up lol! I’ve had a bit of a hutch drought lately lol. I love Ultra Pure WHite also…I did our kitchen cabinets in it and it is so fresh and clean! Thanks, Lizzy! XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
DEFINITELY an improvement! It was a no way item for me before the changes!
Christy says
Ha ha thank you so much, Rose!! That amber bottle plastic was an odd trend for sure! XOXO
Jerri says
What sweet makeovers. As always, you amaze me! Thank you for sharing.
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Jerri!! XOXO

Christy says
I appreciate that so much, Char, thank you!! Yeah I don’t miss the plastic amber doors at all! XOXO
Maureen Deaton says
Such an inspiration! I purchased a similar hutch at an on-line auction with your creative ideas in mind! I’m waiting for a good weather weekend to tackle it (: Hope it turns out as beautiful as yours.
Christy says
Oh that’s awesome!! Good luck with it…I’m sure it will turn out amazing!! XOXO
Sandi Wagner says
Glad you reposted since I didn’t know about you in 2016…so happy that I do now! I LOVE it!
Christy says
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one, Sandi, thank you! It’s a shame sometimes that those older makeovers never get seen again! XOXO
Linda Johnson says
LOVE THE END RESULT…OF COURSE!! Question: How many coats of Behr paint and did you spray or brush it? I did a couple of cabinets similar and brushing was a lot of work…I finally got paint sprayer, and now that the weather is finally paint weather…I want to get started!!! So, just wondering what you do for these amazing results…Thanks for your ever inspiring posts!!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Linda!! It took three coats of paint, and I brushed it on. It is a lot of work using a brush, but I enjoy the quiet business of painting if that makes sense. Plus I’m too lazy to pull out my sprayer and spray tent haha! XOXO
