Hello, amazing friends!! Are any of you done with your holiday shopping?? I feel like I still have a ton of shopping to do! I had family in town this weekend and shopped a bit, so no work got done ha ha! I pulled from my archives of 1000+ makeovers and picked a pretty one from 2018 for ya today! I’m sharing how to turn a twin bed into a bench! Even if you never plan to actually do this, it’s still a fun before and after to see!

Here is how the twin bed I used started. It was a $15 thrift store find:

 

I often skip already-painted pieces, and the paint job wasn’t so hot, but the white did make a great base coat for this makeover, so I decided to bring it home with me.

Turn a Twin Bed into a Bench!

I started by cutting the foot board in half. This would become the new sides. I then attached them to the back by drilling pocket holes with my Kreg Jig. (Visit this post HERE to see more details on what these steps look like if you plan to do this.)

Then I it a roadblock because the headboard, which makes up the back of the bench, didn’t have a piece across the back that was the right height for a seat like most headboards have:

Instead, it had two slats across the back…one was too low to hold the seat slats and the other too high. Also, to support the seat slats at the front, I would need to add a piece of wood across the front. The issue on this one is that the support piece would butt up next to the rounded, spindly parts on either side, which I thought could be weird.

I did it anyway!

I decided that I didn’t have too many options and started working on attaching the 1×4 across the front into those rounded parts. I drilled a small pilot hole first for my screw, then drilled a shallow hole with a drill bit large enough to allow my screw heads to sink below the surface…

I used 2 1/2″ wood screws.

Then I filled the holes in with wood filler. (This was before I found Dixie Mud.) I added another piece across the back the same way:

Make sure everything is level as you go!

Now I had both a front and back piece for which to attach my seat slats, and the front piece didn’t look too weird against the spindle parts after all.

I used pre-primed 1X6 boards from the Home Depot for the seat pieces and attached them using my nail gun.

Everything got two coats of paint very similar to Driftwood mixed 50/50 with Cotton. Then I painted the white spindle details, taped off the stripes on the back using FrogTape for delicate surfaces, and gave them two coats of white also:

You can see that attaching that front support piece to the rounded part doesn’t look odd at all now that it’s done…

It was 20 degrees when I was choosing what to share today, and I needed some warmth ha ha, so this summery piece was perfect! 20 degrees is cold for us!
