Hello beautiful friends! I’m back today with another box from my haul. I’ve got an upcycled tea box for y’all this time!
I found this tea box priced at $7.99, but luckily, all yellow tags were half off, so I got it for $4:
It had been bumped around a bit but nothing paint couldn’t fix…
After giving it a good cleaning with White Lightning while I was cleaning this farmhouse table I shared in my last post, it was ready for paint!
I’ve included affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Paint
For this box, I chose a super fun color….how about hot pink??
This color is Peony by Dixie Belle, and I just love it!
It did take four coats for solid coverage. I have painted this over white before and it only took two coats.
Once the final coat was dry, I sanded all over with a sanding sponge:
These sanding sponges are super fine and are perfect for smoothing out a chalk painted surface without distressing, and I did not want to distress this one.
Adding a Transfer…or two?
Transfers are such an easy way to give these boxes a new look, and I chose this Bright Meadow Middy transfer for this one:
I decided to add it on an angle this time instead of centering it like I did on the last box I redid…
If you haven’t used a transfer before, it’s pretty simple.
- Get an idea of where you want it first. Transfers can be cut apart and combined anyway you like.
- Peel off the white backing.
- Lay it onto your surface.
- Use the enclosed stick (or this fancier tool) to burnish (rub with pressure) to release the image from the clear top sheet onto your surface.
- Once the image has been transferred, peel back the clear top layer and remove.
- Then take your fingers, a clean cloth, or a finishing pad and rub it across the surface to be sure it is adhered well all over.
Once I had this one transferred, I added a few of the single blooms to come down the front a bit more.
Then, it was time for TRANSFER #2!
This is one of Redesigns newest Gold transfers by Kacha. There are four designs in all and this one is called Perfume Notes:
These transfers are so ooh la la and as you can see, the gold is nice and bright.
You apply them to your surface the very same way as a regular transfer. I cut a few lines from this one to use on my tea box:
When you pull back the top layer…it’s bling bling bling!
How cool is that?
Seal
I sealed inside and out with Clear Coat in Satin, using the blue sponge applicator to apply it on the outside…
For the inside, I used a small brush since a brush gets into the corners more easily.
The after
Ready to see how it turned out??
How about those pretty feet?
I had these feet that I found on Amazon HERE in my stash:
They didn’t start out gold, but I wanted them to have the same bling as the letters on the box.
Imitation Gold Leafing
For that, I reached for two things, Dixie Belle Stick with Me Glue and Redesign’s Imitation Gold Leaf:
I’ve never used real gold leaf, but I have been wanting to try this imitation version since we got it in ages ago!
It’s very reasonable and comes with 25 super thin sheets:
I just applied my glue and then waited for it to turn from milky white to clear…
Once the glue was clear, I laid a piece of the imitation gold leafing over it and used a small dry brush to push it into all the details:
That was it! The result is super blingy which is exactly what I wanted!
In that photo above, you can also see the flowers and leaves that I added to hang down over the front.
I used E6000 glue to attach the feet.
I love the gold layered over the floral!
The Inside
Here’s how the inside looked when I found it:
Luckily, the liner that held the tea came out pretty easily.
I was able to paint most of the interior, but I still needed to cover the damage on the bottom.
To do that, I covered a piece of foam core that I had cut to fit in fabric and secured it with hot glue:
Fancy!
I used hot glue to secure it to the inside of the box as well:
The inside top didn’t really need to be covered, but I did it anyway. It looks more finished.
And this fabric is just so cute! I had it left over from another project I redid a while back and it matches the Peony so well!
This knob was one I took off of something long ago. It got the same leafing treatment…
I really enjoyed playing with this super fun color today!
You can barely see this box below the other box on the left, but I still get to cross it off!

Hi Christy! So many yummy products used on this box. I have that transfer in my cart now. I have tried using fabric to line boxes. Gone over your tutorials over and over and I cannot get it right. It is very frustrating. LOL. Thank you for sharing all of this goodness
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! I’m getting new things in all the time but don’t always have a project to use them on. This box was perfect to try out that imitation gold leafing.
