Hello, sweet friends, and welcome to another Trashy Treasures Tuesday! I have a super cute updated picnic basket to share with you, and my friends have projects of their own to share. I’ll link to their makeovers at the bottom!
Updated Picnic basket
Here is how this picnic basket started:
It was $6.98, and while I thought that was a bit much at the time, there is a reason I bought it anyway which you’ll see in a bit.
Clean
To clean baskets, I usually just give them a good vacuum to get any dust out of the weave and I do that with my shop vac. I did, however, mix up some White Lightning to give the top of this one a good cleaning since it looked like it needed it…
This one had some damaged areas and you can see also that it had some sort of logo on it that had been painted over but was still showing through the paint:
So, rather than paint over that only to have it still show through, I planned to add decoupage paper to the top to cover it right on up.
But first, I still needed to paint the rest.
Paint
For the body of the basket, as well as the underside of the lid, I chose Weeping Willow:
The Best Dang Brush makes light work of painting larger baskets!
Once I had the body painted, I did just the top in Cotton as a base for my decoupage paper:
The colors in the papers show the best over a white background.
Adding Decoupage Paper to the top of the basket
I chose the Froggy Meadow Greens decoupage paper for the top:
This paper is pretty large at 23.4” X 33.1” so I had to choose which part I wanted to use on the top of my basket and settled on this portion right in the middle:
Remove the Creases
Before I could get to adding it, I needed to remove the creases, and I like to do that with my hairdryer, running it along the crease on the warmest setting.
Next, I applied one coat of Redesign’s Decoupage Gel with a 2″ Foam and Dandy brush:
I recommend wearing gloves as this stuff likes to stick to fingers!
I used 220 grit sandpaper to sand away the excess paper…
And then I added a second coat of decoupage gel:
Seal
To seal the painted portion, I gave it a quick spray with Rustoleum Clear Satin spray sealer and then I hit the top with a coat of Clear Coat in satin using my blue sponge to apply it:
While the decoupage gel is a varnish, I just like how it looks after being sealed with the Clear Coat.

Here is how this once weary basket looks now!
I’m not usually a fan of green, but I am loving this one!
The green before was a bit harsh, but this color is soft and lovely!
And the top really makes this basket so cute!
While this side is so pretty…
The frogs add some whimsy!
I recently used the same Froggy Meadows Green pattern in the smaller transfer on a basket HERE.
Painting an old picnic basket makes for fantastic extra storage that you can keep right out in the open!
What about the inside??
Well the inside is why I didn’t mind paying $6.98 for it!
It was already lined in this cute green gingham check!
It’s also the reason I kept this basket green.
The only thing I had to do was tape it off before painting the unfinished bits:
I love it having the work already done for me!
What a fun little update this was to do!

Oh my golly that is absolutely adorable, Christy!!!! You know how much I ADORE green – what a fabulous color – and the decoup papers goes so perfectly with it. And I squealed out loud that it was lined with the perfect fabric (in great shape too yay!) WELL done, it is absolutely beautiful.

What a difference. The previous color was seriously hideous lol. Love how it is lined also. Love the transfer and that color green. Just saw the transfer used by Nancy also. Love it! Wow I sure repeated the word love here lol.
