Welcome, beautiful friends! Today I’m sharing how I brightened up this cute glass cabinet I found at the thrift store for $10:
Paint
I wanted a bright white look for this piece, so I started with two coats of Dixie Belle’s Cotton chalk mineral paint:
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I taped off the glass with FrogTape since I was unable to remove it. I removed the tape as soon as I applied the second coat, while the paint was still wet.
Distress & Seal
When the paint was dry, I sanded liberally to get a really distressed look for this piece and sealed with Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in Satin using their sponge to apply it.
Add fabric to the back
To add fabric to the back, I made a pattern with paper first:
I used my cutting mat and rotary cutter set for the straight edges and my fabric scissors for the curvy part at the top.
I attached the fabric the same way I attach it to the insides of drawers or the front of drawer panels, using matte Mod Podge as a glue, applying it with a chip brush. I did not apply the Mod Podge over the top.
And that was that!
The result
This fabric started out as a set of curtain panels I found at Homegoods a while back, my favorite source for pretty decor fabric!
I love that it has a pattern, but it’s still neutral.
Tres belle!
This would be perfect for displaying the smallest of treasures!
What would you use it for?
Crossing off projects from lists never gets old!!

That is so beautiful now. I am so glad you did this piece in white, and I love the fabric you used on the back, its beautiful! You will never hear me complain about the beautiful white you use, it always gets my heart pumping fast. I just placed an order on your Etsy shop I have never used any of this paint line. I have been wanting to order it for a long time but haven’t gotten to it till now. I can’t wait to get the order!!! Thanks for the inspiration once again, it is beautiful!

Christina in SW FL says
Beautiful little cabinet Christy! I think it would look great in the bath with little accessories in it. Not unlike what you created. Or the kitchen for pretty spice jars.
I love the photo of Jack and Lyla. May Lyla have a wonderful vet visit. Only good news. 🙂
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! Oh yes…absolutely! Jack is so sweet with Lyla…I think she may have some permanent damage to one of her eyes, but she seems like a happy healthy kitty otherwise. Thanks for the well-wishes! XOXO
Janice Holt says
What a beautiful little cabinet. Love the fabric on the back and you distressed it just the amount to look great. Never disappointed. Sweet pic of your son and kitty.
Christy says
Thanks, Janice! I’ll admit I may have been looking for somewhere to hang this in my own home ha ha. Lyla seems to be doing well! XOXO
Kellie says
Beautiful cabinet makeover. I would use it for my vintage perfume bottle collection. I have a small cabinet in my stash to make over and you have inspired me to start it. So glad your fur baby is doing well. Such a sweet picture!
Christy says
Thank you, Kellie! That is the perfect purpose for this cabinet! Lyla is so sweet and Jack just loves her to pieces! XOXO
Shirley says
Christy, what a lovely piece; absolutely beautiful. I have a wall-clock in a case that looks a lot like your glass cabinet. The poor thing has resided underneath one of our beds for a number of years. I would like to do what you did and give this pretty cabinet a new lease on life. I will have to remove the clock which should be fairly easy but how do I add shelves? Any ideas? Can it be done? Any help you can offer would be greatly and most appreciated.I love ❤️ your blog and find it most inspiring.
Shirley
Christy says
Thank you SO much, Shirley! I LOVE that you are inspired by what I share!! You can most certainly add shelves. You’ll need to cut the wood for it or you can measure and have the guys at Home Depot cut it in the sizes you need. Then you can add them by using a nailgun from the outside, or by using a few small nails and a hammer. Turn the clock on its side, insert the shelves where you want them and hammer in from the side. Does that make sense? Hope so! Good luck! XOXO
Phyllis says
Gorgeous cabinet. Sweet pet photo.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Phyllis! XOXO
Sandra says
Thanks for keeping us up to date on the kitty.
Christy says
You’re welcome, Sandra! She came to us with one of her eyes pretty much crusted shut. It looks so much better now, but she may have some permanent damage in that eye. Other than that, she acts like a perfectly healthy happy kitty, so hoping for good news tomorrow! XOXO

Another beautiful piece. You are so creative.
Couldn’t get the link to Dixie Belle sponge to come up. How do I find this sponge?
Christy says
Thank you, Laura! So sorry the link wasn’t working. Here is a direct link to the sponge and I updated them in the post as well: https://www.etsy.com/listing/693460480/dixie-belle-sponge-applicator. XOXO

Cheryl Atkinson says
That is the sweetest picture of your son and the kitty. She is gorgeous. I have a cabinet similar to this that i’m not using at all right now. I would love to find some fabric like this and give it a makeover. What makes you decide to use Cotton or Fluff?
Thank you Christy!
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! She is the sweetest and Jack just loves her. What a good question! Sometimes it is the fabric that I plan to use as in this case. I liked the Cotton better with this fabric than the Fluff. Cotton is a true bright white and requires one more coat than the Fluff since the Fluff does have a little bit of pigment in it. So if it is a larger piece, I might go with the Fluff. XOXO
Micah says
Wow! This is so beautiful! I love the curvy top and fabric backing. As I’m writing this I’m looking at a flatware box that is siting on the table waiting to be lined with fabric. This gives me some inspiration!
Christy says
Thank you, Micah! Sometimes we need a little encouragement to get things done! XOXO

Marie says
I love that fabric! This is such a pretty makeover, Christy. Come on, how adorable is that photo of Jack and Lyla! Glad to hear she is doing well.
Christy says
Thank you, Marie! HomeGoods curtain aisle for the win ha ha! Aren’t they so sweet? She seems like a happy healthy kitty aside from one of her eyes. She came to us with an eye issue and she’s been on eye ointment. Hoping she checks out ok aside from that! XOXO
Debbie in TX says
Thanks to your magic, this little cabinet is now a stunning piece. Adding the fabric to the back made all the difference, and it is simply beautiful. I would put some photos or small beachy items to display on the shelves, those are just my faves.
What perfect timing on the photo of Jack and Lyla — so precious!!
Christy says
Thanks, Debbie! I love the idea of filling it with precious photos and beachy things. That is probably what I would do too! I’m so glad I captured that sweet moment! XOXO

This is a great makeover. I love the fabric. I’m going to have to start looking at curtains for inspiration.
That is such a sweet pic of your son and the kitty.
Love your ideas!

Kathy Bowles says
This is so stinking cute! I am totally jealous of how you get things at such good prices at your thrift stores. This would never be $10 here in TX the DFW area!
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy! We have a ton of thrift stores in our area, but some are definitely better than others! There are some that are so pricey, I won’t even go to them! XOXO
Patty says
Beautiful little cabinet, Christy! But I am a fan of all your furniture make overs!😊. The pic of little Lyla & sweet son Jack is definitely frame worthy❣️ I’m keeping ypu in my thoughts & prayers that she continues to heal. She is just so pretty!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Patty! Jack is so sweet on Lyla! She had a positive vet visit today. Looks like her left eye had some trauma to it before we got her, but she can finally open it all the way and it looks like it is trying to heal! Thanks for the prayers! XOXO

I’m so glad you like it, Robyn! Thanks!! XOXO
Kathy A says
Fabulous job! It inspires me to get going on a desk drawer than I want to redo to go over the toilet in the bathroom and display some figurines in. If I was clever, I would have gotten a cupboard with a door–to keep the dust out! I, too, love using fabric items for non-intended uses–I have “wallpapered” a dollhouse with calico prints and used a trimmed down shower curtain for a tablecloth. Used another one to make gorgeous gift bags!
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy! It sounds like you are very resourceful…that is a great trait to have! I hope you got started on that drawer! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
