Hello amazing friends and Happy October!!
Today’s shelf makeover is brought to you by Home Interiors. (Not really) Remember them?
This must have been very popular back in the day because this is about the fifth time I’ve come across this exact same shelf:
I’ve been told it was an old Home Interiors piece. I have made over two of these already which I will link at the bottom, and I’ve passed on a couple that were priced too high. This one was $4.25, so I decided to get it this time. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
When I was redoing the first one, I had originally planned to add a piece of bead board across the open area at the back. At the time, I didn’t have a piece wide enough, so I ended up doing something different.
This time, I decided to go with the bead board and used my small circular saw to cut a piece to cover the opening.
I took part of the shelf apart by removing a few small screw to make it easier to paint. Then I gave everything a coat of Fluff, followed by a coat of Vintage Duck Egg Blue mixed 50/50 with Cotton that I had left from the clock face I used it on in Tuesday’s smalls post:
I started with Fluff because I wanted a bit of white to show through here and there when I sanded. To sand, I used 220 grit sandpaper (that is my favorite kind and pretty much what I always use for my final sanding) and as always, I wrapped it around an old foam sanding sponge to make it easier to handle…
It comes in 9 x 11″ sheets that I cut into fours. (Anyone else work in their jammies? 🙂 )
I sealed with Dixie Belle’s Best Dang Wax in Clear.
What sealer should I use?
I’ve had people ask when to use wax and when to use Clear Coat or Gator Hide. I’m going to put together one informative post on all of the products I use that can be a good reference guide soon.
Basically, you can use the clear wax or Clear Coat interchangeably to seal most pieces. I usually reach for the Clear Coat for larger pieces because it’s much less labor intensive than applying wax, especially for furniture.
If I have a small piece though, the wax is pretty easy to use and sometimes if I have it out already, I’ll just use that. I go for Gator Hide when I have more of a high traffic piece that really needs to be durable.
I reassembled my shelf and screwed the bead board into the back, added a couple of sawtooth hangers, and voila:
The bead board adds instant coastal-cottage charm:
And those hooks?
They came from this guy:
I found this for $1.98! I always keep my eye out for pieces that I can steal the parts from! I spray primed them with Rustoleum Spray Primer first just to get a quick first coat on them and then I followed up with a coat of Cotton.
They are attached by screws from the back that were a tad short for the thickness of my shelf, so I grabbed a drill bit just a bit bigger than the screw head and drilled some out of the back where each screw would go so the screws would work:
This area was covered by the bead board.
Ah my sweet babe…this is one of the photos I like to photocopy to stage frames that I sell in my booth.
And as promised, see what I did with the other two shelves I found just like this one HERE and HERE!

Wow it turned out beautiful. Back in the day when Home Interiors was around I use to have that same shelf, I haven’t had it for years! I sure wish I still had it because it would get the same treatment. Turned out great!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! Oh darn! Well I have come across them several times, so maybe you will find another! XOXO
Becky Fischer says
I fell in love with the shelf as it was when you purchased it. I am more in love with what you did with it. How ingenious to put other hooks on it. Now I’m going to be on the hunt so I can do what you did. I am always impressed with what you. To me you are a genius and I just love that you always see what an object can be. It is no wonder that you are so successful with your booth. Great job as usual. Hugs
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Becky! Yes, I have seen this same shelf several times, so there’s a good chance you may come across one eventually too! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Christina says
Christy, this is my favorite of the 3 shelf versions. 🙂 The other two are charming but the colors on this one really speak to me. Plus the bead board. 🙂
Have you ever worked with wallpaper which has bead board texture?
Love that photo too… so soft and adorable! 🙂
Be well and create on!!! (Hope your son is enjoying his college time yet looking forward to coming home for the holidays).
xo
Christy says
Oh yay, I’m so glad you like this one! This one would fit in more with my own decor as well. I have not worked with the textured wallpaper. I wonder how it takes chalk paint? It certainly would be fun to try out. Jack is doing very well at college so far. He really loves it, but he says he is looking forward to coming home for a bit also…and I am really looking forward to having him home! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Janice Holt says
What a great job on the shelf. What a little paint can do. I also loved all your smalls Tues but didn’t get around to commenting on them. Have a great week-end.
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! Glad you enjoyed the smalls too! Enjoy your weekend also! XOXO
hollicus says
So cute. Love the color. Question: Could you use one of the sealers on a dining room table to prevent scratching?
Christy says
Thank you, Hollicus! You could apply the Gator Hide to help protect the surface. It is the toughest topcoat and is water repellent also! XOXO
Hollicus says
Thank you! 🙂
Christy says
You’re welcome!

How well I remember Home Interior Parties! I’m showing my age.😀 I use to have many of their pieces. I’m sure I had at least one party.😀
Your talent always amazes me. You think of the best ways to bring a piece up to date. As as always, I love this one too.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Nancy! I think those parties were more of a really good way to get a bunch of your best gals together. I didn’t do Home Interiors, but certainly hosted my share of Pampered Chef parties. Now they even do those online…just not the same! XOXO
Sue Mellette says
Love all your shelves. This one is particularly attractive with the addition of the beadboard and the color. Definitely the coastal vibe! I always look forward to your posts on Tuesday and Thursday! Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Sue! You know how I love coastal anything ha ha! Enjoy your weekend too and I’ll see you Tuesday!! XOXO

Toby Peplow says
Love love love!! Will def be watching for your piece on the products you use and how you use them. Have a good day Christy!
Christy says
Thank you, Toby! Yes, that will be really helpful for sure! XOXO
Paula says
Love the addition of the beadboard and the hooks. The photo taken from the side is so lovely with all the curley cues. I wait with anticipation for your reference guide! Sometimes its hard to start something when there are too many choices and I don’t have product on hand.
Christy says
Thank you, Paula! There is so much you can do with just a few simple products. I think the guide will be very helpful! XOXO
gwen says
aaaah, what a simple and HUGE improvement Christy! this one makes me feel good too about buying and/or saving a piece just for the hardware. Yay, i’m not alone!
(i don’t work in my jammie, but i do read your posts every morning they come in while still in my bathrobe!)
Christy says
Thank you, Gwen! Oh yes…I always keep my eyes open for good hardware that can be salvaged too! And ha ha…bathrobes are totally allowed! XOXO
Deanna says
I love what you did with this shelf. The bead board was the perfect touch in the transformation. I also love the idea of using the hardware from the other “parts piece”. Now…. that’s food for thought!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Deanna! Oh yep…often someone will donate something that has one hook broken or missing too and I nab those when I see them! XOXO
Robyn Wright says
All 3 of them came out perfect!
Christy says
Thank you, Robyn! XOXO
September Whisenant says
I actually had this shelf, and a ton of other Home Interior decor, back in the day. Unfortunately, I don’t remember whatever happened to it so no sweet makeover for me unless I spot one while thrifting. Great job and I love how the bead board of the shelf lines up with the bead board of the wall for the photo shoot. Those are the kind of details that drive me nuts if they are ignored!
Christy says
Oh darn…well since I have happened upon several myself, there’s a good chance you might find another too! Thank you, September and ha ha I totally get it! XOXO
Vicki says
Pretty! That definitely looks like vintage Home Interior to me, I sold it for a while in the late 90’s. I think it was before my time, but my mother in-law had a lot of older pieces, and it’s pretty recognizable. One thing about it, they are good quality items, I have spray painted older brass pieces as well to update them. Of course, now antique brass/gold are on trend; I think the modern versions are less shiny yellow brass and more matte/antique gold, but at least it’s a good base color to work with. Love how you added the beadboard and hooks! Home interiors also used frames on their prints/mirrors that had really pretty detailing that can really be highlighted nicely with dry brushing/glazing/waxing. I recently painted a dark brown one navy blue, dry brushed with gray, and topped with brown glaze to give it the look of antique washed denim. I currently have a HI mirror (I plan to paint the frame) I found at a garage sale for $5, that I’m pretty sure was about $50 when I sold it! Thanks for sharing!
Christy says
Thank you, Vicki! Yes, their items are very nice quality and no doubt they weren’t cheap to buy. Your frame sounds really pretty! Great yard sale find too! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Great makeover Christy. I too always buy cheap things with great hooks. I love these shelves to hand my jewelry or my hats. I even have one by the door with the dog leash and flashlight. Please do the 2 baskets next. I have the exact ones as square 2 and 15. Lol. You can tell who I get my great ideas from!
Christy says
Thanks, Cheryl! Oh yes…hooks can organize so many things! The baskets are on my agenda for tomorrow, so we will see what I come up with! XOXO
Constance Colvin says
Another bingo! for you Christy!
Christy says
Thank you, Connie!! XOXO
sharon austin says
LOVE, love , love! That’d look great in the bathroom at my cottage!! I’m gonna be on the hunt now for an old shelf like that. LOL
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon! Ooh yes…perfect for a cottage bathroom! Good luck in your search! XOXO
Mary says
Wowza! Beautiful transformation! Now I wish I would have kept that shelf that I donated long ago…I didn’t have your vision! Great job Christy! 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! When I think about all the things I’ve sold for next to nothing at yard sales over the years before I had the painting bug when a little paint could have done wonders! XOXO
Janine Darby says
Love your ideas and your blog, Christy! Thank you for all the advice as I got started on some rehab items while here in Virginia Beach!
Christy says
Thank you, Janine! I’m so glad we got to chat while you are here! XOXO
