Hello lovelies, and welcome back!! I’ve got a fun mirrored wall shelf to share with you today!
This mass-produced piece was $6.50 at the thrift store:
I knew it could be so cute, even with just a new paint job, but I did a little bit more than that to it.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I noticed on closer inspection that it had these velvetish disks covering over the screw holes:
That is a sure sign of quality right there!
I removed those disks and filled the areas with Dixie Mud instead:
After letting it dry for several hours, I sanded the area smooth with 220 grit sandpaper.
I had sanded this piece a bit all over because I had planned to use Silk mineral paint which needs a little something to grip onto, but I ended up going with Chalk Mineral Paint instead.
You can also see in that photo above that I removed the mirror to paint:
Clean
Then I vacuumed up any dust and cleaned all over with White Lightning, avoiding the areas where I added the Mud since it is water soluble. Normally, I would clean first, but I was so darned excited to fill those holes!
BOSS for bleed through
Because I had sanded down below the original finish where I filled with the Mud, I decided to run out to the garage the night before I planned to paint and add a coat of BOSS just in case to prevent any possible bleed through. (That is where the reddish tannins bleed through your paint, resulting in random pink splotches.)
BOSS works best if you allow it to dry overnight, and I usually only need one coat.
This is a newer piece, so had I not sanded, there would be little risk of bleed through.
Paint
Finally, the fun part!
I’m always excited when I can get to painting!
For the plans I had for this piece, I wanted a white background, but I went with Fluff this time instead:
I love Fluff, but I have been using Cotton a lot more lately. Cotton is a bright white, while Fluff is more of what I like to describe as “Vintage White”.
I used it on our bedroom furniture HERE.
What I love most about it is that it usually covers in just two coats, while Cotton takes three coats.
I also flipped it over and painted the back, including the groove that will be reflected in the mirror where the mirror sits:
Sand
Once the second coat was dry, I sanded all over with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth everything out and distress ever so slightly.
Add the mirror back
I decided to add the mirror back before getting to the next step.
I’m only showing this part to share that since the backing was ugly before, I used matte Mod Podge to added this cute patterned Kraft paper to that back panel before adding it back to the mirror:
It just makes the back look nicer!
This backing was stapled in place previously, so I used my staple gun to secure it the same way.
Adding a Transfer
Then, I pulled out the sheet I had left of this Blossom Flight transfer:
I wanted to put the mirror back in place so that I could take the transfer right onto the mirror…
To cut the transfer nice and even to fit in the corner, I enlisted the help of my rotary cutter set:
I first discovered this set when I was a quilter WAY back when. This rotary cutter can actually cut though several layers of fabric! It made light work of cutting all those quilting squares, but I use it ALL the time still for paper, transfers, etc!
I continued adding pieces here and there.
To fit the narrow space I had to work with, I had to get creative with how I cut the pattern apart…
Seal
Once I was happy with the transfer placement (It’s so easy to keep going and going!), I sealed with Clear Coat in Satin using my mini brush this time to get into those inside corners more easily than the blue sponge would allow:
The after
This mirrored wall shelf has a totally different look now!
I wasn’t sure how the transfer would do on the mirror, but I like it!
It will need to be cleaned with care, but if the mirror portion ever gets messed up, the transfer can always be scraped away from the mirror with a razor blade, so the pattern is just on the frame.
This would be great in an entry for leashes, keys, and to give yourself one last mirror check to make sure that cupcake you swallowed whole while your kids weren’t looking didn’t leave any frosting on the side of your face.
I swapped out the original wooden pegs for these glass knobs that came off of another piece:
Much better!
Pin it to save for later!
That is another one done woo hoo!!

Shop News
In shop news, Dixie Belle has a released several brand new decoupage papers, and they are all available in my Etsy Shop now! They are all each one large sheet measuring 23″ X 33″.
Ancient Marrakesh/Woodland Nursery
Lovely Sonnet/Late Aurora
Blooming Iris/Sunflower Sunset
I had originally planned to replace the mirror on today’s makeover with one of these pretty scenes, but mirrors sell so well that I hated to ditch the mirror. I hope to get to use these on something soon!
Dixie Belle has also released a product called Dixie Shine. It is applied with Stick with Me glue and burnished to your surface much like a transfer to give your piece a gold leaf effect without the mess of traditional gold leafing.
It comes in Gold, Silver, and Copper, and I can’t wait to play with it!
Dixie Shine/Stick with Me glue
Today’s makeover was a fun one and ended up in a different place than I originally planned, but that is how makeovers go sometimes!
I hope you enjoyed it!
I’ll be back on Thursday with a piece that I brought home from my booth to revive. Here is how it started:
UPDATE: See makeover #2 for this piece HERE now!

Awe, Christy, I hope you know how talented you are. I long for the vision that artists like you have. My mom had vision, my sister has it, my brother is an artist, but I do good just to get a piece painted. I was born late in life (surprise!) and I always joke that God poured out all that talent on others in my family thinking He was done and then oops!, let Me scramble to see what I can do for this little surprise package. I say all this just to say, you are blessed to be able to create and reap the satisfaction of a beautiful finished product. I have the desire, just not the vision. I am superbly blessed, I just admire your particular abilities and talents. Have a blessed and creative day!
Christy says
Aww your kind words mean so much, Georgia, thank you! And you were blessed with a kind heart for sure! XOXO
