Hello, gorgeous friends! I have a treat for you today!! Not only am I sharing what I did with a beautiful French provincial dresser, but I am also joining four other amazing furniture artists! We are teaming up to promote Dixie Belle’s brand new Cottage Collection Chalk paint colors!
There are SIX fabulous colors in all:
I can’t wait for you to see the color I chose!
This is the beauty I had the pleasure of working with on today’s makeover:
I couldn’t believe when I looked at the tag and it was only $75!
I measured it to be sure it would fit in my car since it is quite tall and then booked it to the register with the tag!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Clean
After removing the hardware, the first step to any makeover is always a good cleaning.
I used my go to prep cleaner, I TBSP White Lightning mixed into a half gallon of warm water, to give it a good cleaning using a terry cloth pad:
Gloves are recommended for this step. Then, I swapped out my dirty water for clean water and gave it another once over to remove any residue.
This thing looked pretty clean but that water says otherwise!
Paint
What color did I choose??
I’ve already used Cottage Door HERE, Weeping Willow HERE, and Secret Path HERE.
I thought I might try a new one for this dresser, but there was one that I wanted to use again on something much larger…Secret Path! I used my favorite brush for painting furniture the Mini Angle brush:
I used Secret Path on two smaller pieces already but just on the interior. This is such a beautiful color that I had to use it for this project.
No BOSS needed
As you can see, there was no need to prime first with BOSS this time. This piece is actually not that old, it has no red tones to it, and the finish was intact so I was able to get right to painting!
The coverage is amazing as you can tell by that photo above, but I did give everything two coats.
Blending
Since the goal was to highlight this gorgeous color, I didn’t want to use transfers, etc, but I did want to add a little something and decided to do some blending.
To do that, I added a fresh layer of Secret Path all around the edges of my drawer and then spritzed water across the surface with my continuous mister:
I then added a line of Cotton white to the center with my Best Dang Brush:
To blend the two colors, I started swirling the brush in circles all around the edge, pulling the paints into one another:
I kept going all the way around…
This step takes patience, and you may need to add more of one color or the other and you may need to mist again, but keep going until you get a look you’re happy with.
Sand
Once I was finished with the blending, I sanded all over using these sanding sponges.
They’re super fine grit and perfect for smoothing out a chalk painted surface when you don’t want to distress.
Plus, they don’t create a ton of dust and I love that. If you want a more distressed finish, I would opt for regular 220 grit sandpaper.
Seal
To protect my chalk painted finish, I used my favorite sealer, Clear Coat in the satin finish.
I applied it using the blue sponge applicator, which makes it so easy:
The After
Let’s see how this beauty looks now!
Isn’t this color gorgeous??
There are a couple of variations of this color in the photos depending on the light, but this is the most accurate representation.
I kept all the original hardware since it was lovely…
I wanted to use a gold or champagne color for it, but I thought using white will make it easier to match to solid white pieces in its new space.
I sprayed the hardware with Rustoleum spray primer first, then painted them in Silk Salt Water.
Then to give them a bit of sparkle, I added a coat of Pearlescent Glaze over the top. I tried to capture the difference, but it’s hard to see in photos:
The glaze acts as a sealer also for a little added protection.
The blending is really subtle, but adds some interest…
The drawers
The insides of these drawers were immaculate, but the outsides were pretty rough looking and they felt rough also:
I smoothed them out with 220 grit sandpaper while I was prepping…
Then I painted over all the ugly with this deep purple color, Dixie Belle’s Aubergine:
To add some fun, I used FrogTape for delicate surfaces for one of the easiest (and one of my favorite) additions…stripes!
I added two coats of Secret Path and removed the tape as soon as the second coat went on:
A little bit of unexpected whimsy!
See that chair makeover HERE if you missed it.

I can’t wait to visit their makeovers myself!

Beautiful as always! Love the color and the blending technique. So pretty on its own with no transfer 😁. When looking at your Etsy shop I saw a product I have not seen – terra tuff. Is is similar to gator hide without the shine? Have you done a post about that I missed?

Inspiring makeover. I have recently purchased a ‘Gentlemans’ waterfall vanity set, complete with wardrobe, dresser, large mirrors, seat. I’m guessing 1930’s-1940’s ? Its not in the best shape and I was looking for ideas on how to proceed. Your makeover of this dresser is most helpful, and quite beautiful. Thank you. Keep the ideas coming.
Christy says
Thank you, Karen! It sounds like you have some real treasures to work with. Here is a post that you may find helpful. It is an antique dresser that had ALL the issues. Even if you decide on a different color than the white that I used, maybe some of the tips will be helpful for yours: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/how-to-paint-an-antique-dresser/ XOXO
