Hello, lovelies!! Today’s redo involves two HUGE mirror makeovers. And they are heavy too! Mirrors are great sellers, so I always look for them while thrifting. I found both of these for super cheap while yard saling last month:

When I’m deciding what to redo next, it’s usually a case of what does my booth need right now? Or, if I need space in my work area, what large item/s can I work on next to clear up some room? In this case, it was both!
I just sold two mirrors in my booth, so I knew I could use some in there, and these are both HUGE mirrors that I really wanted to get out of my workspace!
Huge Mirror Makeover #1
Up first is this mirror:

The yard sale I found it at had these lovely antique wooden chairs that I inquired about (nothing was priced), and the lady said she felt bad for even selling them at her yard sale, but she’d like to get $40 a piece for them. That was a bit steep for me because I’m cheap, so I passed on them.
But then I was very pleasantly surprised when she gave me a price of only $5 on this large mirror! It was in great shape, and I was more than happy to take it off her hands for that price.
To remove the mirror or not?
I like to remove the mirror when painting them, one to keep them safe, and also so I can paint the edge of the back of the frame where the wood would be reflected in the mirror. I was going dark on this one, so I decided to keep the mirror in the frame this time.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Clean
When cleaning wood, I always reach for White Lightning to prep for paint, but with all this detail and this not being wood, I just gave it a good vacuum to remove any dust:

Next, I taped off the mirror using wrapping paper and FrogTape:

Paint
Then I enlisted the help of my HomeRight Finish Max Sprayer, giving this frame two coats of Caviar from Dixie Belle:

The tent was still hotter than a pig roast in July, but spraying was super quick!
Seal
To make life easy, I sprayed the frame with Clear Satin Spray from Rustoleum to seal since I already had it taped off.
All I had to do then was remove the paper, and this makeover was complete!
AFTER
Here is how this one looks now!

I forgot to mention, I went over some of the details with Gold Gilding Wax:

The gilding wax is oiled based, so I applied that last.

Luckily, I still have this gorgeous secretary desk I shared last week to stage with!

I told you it was huge!

I chose Caviar from the chalk mineral paint line for this mirror since I have several black pieces in my booth at the moment.

Huge Mirror Makeover #2
If you thought that one was big, wait until you see the size of this one!
Leaning against our garage, it’s hard to tell the scale of it…

I found this one at the same yard sale as these dated coastal lamps and this mini chalkboard I completed recently. This mirror was priced very well for the size at only $10!
I wanted to go lighter on this one, so I did remove the mirror this time.
How to remove the mirror from the frame
Someone asked me after the last mirror makeover I shared HERE, how I removed the mirror. I’ll try to share a peek of that going forward because that is tough to answer as there are several ways for them to be secured into their frames.
For mirrors that aren’t too old, after removing the paper backing, you will usually see them held in place with something like this:

Or even nails. I used my needle nosed pliers to pull them out. Here, I was also able to enlist the help of a narrow screwdriver to get them out…

Then I was able to set the mirror and backing aside for safe keeping.
Clean
Once again, I just vacuumed any dust out of the details on the frame using my brush attachment on my Ryobi shop vac:

My old shop vac bit the dust, so I just got this Ryobi one which I love! It uses the same 18v batteries that my other cordless Ryobi tools use, and love having no cord trailing me behind all the time when vacumming.
Paint
For this mirror frame, I also used the HomeRight Finish Max Sprayer, painting this one in Cotton:

I would normally use my Best Dang Brush for a large, detailed frame like this to make light work of it, if I were hand painting.
How did the sprayer do this time?
I mentioned with my secretary desk makeover last week that I didn’t love the streaking I got when applying the Silk paint on horizontal surfaces, but I think I was getting near the end of my paint in the jar.
These frames both did very well with the chalk paint, and I did add just about a TBSP of water to my jar to thin it a tiny bit.
I also went back and painted the inside lip on on the backside, so white will be reflected in the mirror:

Sand
I sanded this one smooth all around the edges and then across the details to distress some using 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old sanding sponge:

Seal
I chose not to seal this one this one. Dixie Belle’s Chalk Mineral paint does not require a sealer, but the finish is very flat which isn’t very desirable. Adding a topcoat like Clear Coat in satin will protect and add a lovely sheen, but I didn’t mind the flat finish on this frame at all.
To secure the mirror back into the frame, I used my Logan Point Driver:

My hubby bought this for me for Christmas many many years ago. He thought it was used to make frames. He had no idea it was one of the best gifts ever!
I also added new paper to the back with Matte Mod Podge before adding new heavy duty D-ring hardware for hanging:

I usually use pretty patterned kraft paper like this HERE, but this is all I had that would cover this huge mirror! It’s not pretty, but it does the job!
After
Here is how this huge mirror turned out:

Can you beleive how big it is??
Ha ha! It is way too big for my staging dresser, but it would be perfect above a large mantel or a above a much larger dresser.

And a close up to show the detail…

I love this one!

I’m so excited to have these two HUGE mirrors done and out of my workspace!
Which one do you like best??

Mary Kaiser says
Oh so fantastic!! I love them both, but the white one is totally my favorite! You sure couldn’t tell how large they were when they were standing by your garage door! They both turned out great and someone will buy them quickly from your booth! I love the black one with the secretary, like they were meant to be together!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! The white is my favorite also, but the black was fun and will pair nicely with the secretary in my booth! Have a great week, my friend! XOXO
Cecilia says
Wow, those are big! I like them both but I think the white one is my favorite. ????
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! Aren’t they so big? I like the white one too! XOXO
Janet says
What perfect timing! I cannot resist beveled mirrors and one hopped into my truck just yesterday.
Thank you so much.
Christy says
Oh awesome! I too love a beveled mirror. Have fun with yours!! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
Both are beautiful, Christy! I love the beveled edge on the glass. Somehow, I think it makes a mirror look more refined ????
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! Yes, the beveled edge really does make it feel high quality! XOXO
Nana Diana says
Nice job(s). Those are big mirrors! Happy Tuesday- Diana
Christy says
Thank you, Diana! Hope your week is off to a great start! XOXO
Jackie C says
Whoa talk about a bargain! Mirrors are ridiculously priced anymore. I lucked out and found a huge 44×34” at a thrift store for five dollars last week. Beveled glass which I love. The frame isn’t as intricate as yours, Its curvy not carve-y ???? AND very heavy. I like both of yours, hard to pick a favorite, but I think I’ll go with the white. Have a great week!
Christy says
Thank you, Jackie! I haven’t priced one new in many years, but everything is so expensive these days, so I can imagine. It sounds like you found an amazing one!! Enjoy your week also, my friend! XOXO
Kathy W says
Hi Christy – Both mirrors are beautiful just like every other piece you share with us lucky followers. However, contrary to everyone else, I like the black one best. There is just something about black and gold that gets me every time!! I do love the distressing on the HUGE white mirror. Great job, as usual!! You better start looking for more mirrors to purchase. Those will sell fast in your booth!! Can’t wait to see Thurday’s makeover.

Christy says
Thank you so much, Kathy! The black is very elegant for sure! I was so happy to have the secretary nearby to stage it with. I stil have a couple mirrors in my stash, so I’m ready lol! See ya Thursday with that bench…I can’t wait to share that one! XOXO
Cyndi says
These are both so lovely, and both are classics. I love the distressed white, but I’m a sucker for black and gold. Beautiful jobs on both!
Christy says
Thank you, Cyndi! I am so glad to have them out of the danger zone I call a workspace lol! XOXO
Irma Walker says
I love both mirrors. But I think the black w/gold may be my favorite. Your skills and taste are spit on. I always look forward to what your next dyi is going to be.
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much, Irma, thank you! I love black and gold together…so elegant! XOXO
Caye says
Hey Christy, good job on both those mirrors. I’m joining the white fans, but I totally understand your reasoning for painting the other one black. Sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do!
Christy says
Thank you, Caye! The white is my favorite also! Black sells really well for me, so I got to do one of each! XOXO
Addie says
I have to pick the black one paired with the GORGEOUS secretary. I love all the black pieces……but of course I HATE to dust!!!!
I do have a question for you….how can you describe the difference between the “gold” wax and the “Antique Gold” wax???? I am torn on which one.
Happy 4th!!!….xx Addie
Christy says
Yay! Thank you, Addie! Yes, black does show all the dust for sure! As for the gilding waxes, the regular gold like I used on this mirror is a bright gold, whereas the antique gold is warmer. If you look at this transfer in my shop, the antique gold is more like that: https://theserialdiyer.etsy.com/listing/1902519179 I hope that helps! Happy 4th to you too! XOXO
Ellen Shook says
Both are wonderful! I am a mirror junkie. I actually like the way that large mirror looks over the white chest, being taller than the lower piece. I actually have done this many times because I just like it that way.
Christy says
Thank you, Ellen! It looked so big in the photos, but I too didn’t mind it at all in real life! XOXO
Michele M. says
Christy, I actually GASPED at how great that mirror and that secretary look together. What a fabulous duo. Hope the lucky person who shops at your booth gets them together. I absolutely love them. And your white one is truly huge – what a steal for $10!!!!! It’s cooled off a bit here with all the storms that have gone through. Hope your heat does too. Painting outside in this heat is just UGH to the max!
Christy says
Oh yay…I love that reaction! Thank you, my friend! I was so excited to have that secretary still here so that I could stage the mirror with it. It would be awesome if someone bought both! It was a bit better today, but we could use some rain to cool things off for sure. XOXO
Susan says
It would be nice if you’d include the dimensions when you talk about how big mirrors & frames are
The mirrors are gorgeous.
Christy says
I never thought of that…I’ll keep that in mind next time! Thank you, Susan! XOXO
Heather Taylor says
Wow! My favourite is the black and gold mirror and paired with the desk it is so stunning! They elevate each other. I love when you do the mirrors, I love mirrors lol. The white mirror is beautiful too and normally I prefer the white but not this time.
You are so talented.
Cheers
Christy says
Thank you so much, Heather! I was so excited to still have that secretary here to stage with! XOXO
Robin says
It is huge! Nice.
Christy says
Right? It is very large lol! XOXO
