It’s time once again to join together with some of my favorite blogging friends to bring you a fun themed furniture makeover. This month’s theme is flowers. Last month’s theme was “Bold”. I redid a $5 yard sale chair. The theme for the month before was “Metallic”. I shared a thrift store side table.
I found it a bit more challenging to incorporate flowers into a piece of furniture, but I think I pulled it off.
This table was a $5 yard sale find, and kind of boring as is:
Here is its pretty new makeover:
It was rock solid, but the top had a bit of discoloration:
Perfect for a new paint job and a pretty stencil!
I used Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Ironstone. I did not use a bonding agent, but I still didn’t get much in the way of chipping or flaking, or any at all actually. The coverage was perfect though. Here it is with two coats of paint prior to sanding:
It still could use one more coat for complete coverage, but I wanted to sand quite a bit anyway so I stopped there.
To incorporate flowers into this table, I decided to stencil a ring of flowers on the top. I penciled very lightly around a lamp shade as a guide for my circle:
Then I stenciled my flowers in ASCP in Duck Egg blue all along the circle. This is a stencil I bought years ago.
I used to think of myself as “stencil-challenged” but I think I’m finally getting the hang of it. 🙂
A good sanding, a coat of clear wax, and a salvaged ceramic knob finish it off:
I added a little blue painted detail to the legs as well:
A little surprise in the drawer is always fun…
I felt like the bottom shelf needed something, but I decided to leave it alone since it will likely be covered anyway.
My hydrangea in the background are just getting set to open up. I can’t wait to fill my house with their beautiful blooms!
Hope you enjoyed this little makeover. Be sure to visit my friends for more floral inspired furniture transformations!

Your side table looks so pretty with the combination of white paint and blue stenciled flowers. The design of your table looks just like my bedside table made by my grandfather in the 50’s! Your idea to trace a circle with a lampshade before stenciling is such a great tip. I need to remember that!

So glad you like it, Paula! You are so lucky to have so many treasured family pieces in your home. 🙂

So pretty Christy!! That milk paint adhered fabulously! I’ve only used it once but I’m thinking I need to pull my other sample out and go again! Love the colors too. And surprise drawers are the best! 🙂
(oh and I just realized reading your post I referenced “metallic” as the last theme not “bold” !! Oops!!lol)

Thanks, Nancy! I tried to use this paint on some metal buckets I and ALL of the paint chipped away…I can’t seem to figure it out! It did adhere to this piece well, but I was looking for more “chippiness”. Guess I’ll keep trying. 🙂

Girl, you are so smart. I love everything about this table. I would not have thought to use a lamp shade or anything else to make a circle as a guide. I also love the blue on the legs and the drawer liner!!! Beautiful.

Thanks so much, Kathy! 🙂

I could just write, see above, for my comment. Agree with all commentors. The lines of your little table are so nice and so adaptable to any style idea you’d want to apply to it. I’d love to find a table like that. Love the bottom shelf for books, zines, etc. I like to have place to put m books.
The white over blue, all touches you gave your little table make her smile. Happy weekend

You worked wonders on that little table Christy. I love the clean white with a bit of ruffing up. And your blue flowers really top it off.
I found the flowers theme harder to wrap my head around too. Your stenciling is perfect.
Enjoy your weekend!
