Who’s up for a furniture makeover today? Hello, beautiful friends, and welcome to Furniture Fixer Upper day! I’m joining four of my talented friends, and we’re each bringing you a brand new furniture flip! I’ll link to my friends’ makeovers at the bottom! My project today is a black painted hutch using Silk Mineral Paint that started out like this:
This was an amazing find for only $60!
Up close, it was pretty dirty and looked like it had been a very hard worker….
I usually start with a good cleaning first, even when I plan to sand. I do this because if I have any damage to fill, I don’t like to mess with those areas after they have been filled.
Sand to Prep
This one didn’t seem to need any damage repaired, so I started this time with a good sanding all over with my Ryobi Cat Sander using 220 grit sandpaper:
I have the cordless version that uses their multiuse batteries, but they make a corded version too that is a bit less.
Why am I sanding?
With chalk paint, you do not need to sand to prep, but I planned to use Silk Mineral paint this time, and that does require a good scuff sanding first. Plus, the finish on this piece was quite rough, so it really needed sanding anyway.
Once I sanded all over, I used my shop vac to vacuum up any sanding dust:
If you want to skip the sanding step, you can prep for Silk paint instead using Dixie Belle’s bonding primer, Slick Stick.
Clean
Then, I was ready to clean.
I mixed one TBSP of White Lightning into a half gallon of warm water:
And gave everything a good wipe down.
I followed up with another wipe down with clean water, and this hutch was ready for paint!
Silk Mineral Paint
As soon as I saw this piece with its country vibe, I knew I wanted to paint it black to make it more sleek.
I chose Silk Mineral Paint in Anchor:
I let the first coat dry for a couple of hours and came back to this:
Remember when I didn’t think there were any needed repairs for this piece?
I knew I couldn’t leave the top of this hutch like that, and I pulled out my Dixie Mud to take care of it, filling in all those tiny nicks and scratches…
I hand-sanded the top smooth with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old sanding sponge and then painted a second coat, and here was the result:
Amazing difference, right?!
Seal
With Silk Mineral Paint, there is no need to seal since it has a built-in topcoat.
Of course, you can seal for additional protection if you like or if you’d prefer a different sheen, but I like the eggshell finish you get with Silk, so this project was complete!
Black Painted Hutch After
Here is how this country hutch looks now!
The Anchor paint did wonders to update this hard working hutch!
It is sleek and no longer looks or feels so tired.
I did a very tall hutch HERE a couple of years ago that is giving me some Deja vu vibes. That was updated very similarly.
The dark color is such a prefect backdrop for this beautiful ironstone.
I know many of you received this pattern for your weddings once upon a time. I just love it!
You can see part of my chandelier in that picture there…I am in the dining room, which for those of you who know me, know that I interrupted a very special dinner party that was going on.
The guests were happy to oblige though…
And guess who is right in the middle of the chaos? We see you, Lyla!
See last year’s skeleton dinner party HERE!
That is my office across from the dining room and I needed to move everything out to use that space for photos since this is quite a tall piece.
The inside
Remember what the inside of the cabinets looked like earlier?
So much better now!
I had wanted to use a fun pop of color but ended up having to paint it black as the doors were set back just a bit. There was no defining area in which to stop the paint without it looking weird.
I like it though!
The hardware
We definitely needed new hardware. I chose this simple drop pull for the doors:
I found all the hardware at Hobby Lobby.
I like to mix up the hardware and chose simple glass knobs for the drawer:
The drawer
I shared a peek at the drawer earlier, but here is the before:
I told y’all this was a hard worker!
I chose one of my favorite Waverly fabrics to cover that, adhering it with Matte Mod Podge like a glue:
I do not go over the fabric with the Mod Podge.
All the boo boos were covered right up!
If I had chosen a lighter fabric, I would have primed with white BOSS to give it a nice bright background and to stop the ink in the drawer from potentially coming through the fabric, but with a dark background like this, I didn’t have to do that.
My friends have four more transformations for you to see today as well!
Our dear friend, Jen from Girl in the Garage, is taking a step back to focus on family as she has three very busy boys, but we hope to welcome her back when life isn’t so busy.
We’d love to welcome Natalie from A Ray of Sunlight, who is joining our group! Give her a warm welcome by visiting her project and saying hello…she is up first today!
Crossing a big one off this week and making room in the garage for more!

Oh it is BEAUTIFUL!! I LOVE the drop handles and the glass knobs you put on with the black, it is stunning!! I haven’t use the black silk paint yet, but you don’t have to worry about the ghosting with that because you don’t have to put on a protective coat. It is so cool now, I love it in black!!

Nicey Nice! Sleek and black and I just love the replacement knobs.
You have helped confirm my color choice for an old secretary desk/bookshelf. Just gotta wait ‘til I relocate to invest in Dixie Bell products. Don’t need more to pack.😁
Thanks Christy and I will head on over and take a gander at the shared links of the new DIYers.
Happy/Healthy always

Marcie Lovett says
I am really drawn to furniture painted black, although I enjoy your brighter pieces, Christy. I would call the nicks and scratches “character” but I have to admit that the sleek surface is more fitting for the chic vibe it has now. Love those glass drop pulls. I bet this one sells quickly, even though it’s not “beachy” 😉
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! I don’t have any black pieces in my house, but I love them too, and they always sell quickly for me. I hope that’s the case for this one too! XOXO
Bonnie Hipps says
Hi sweetie, at first I was thinking black???
It turned out beautiful though especially with that iron stone. You never can go wrong with anything that is black and white in my opinion. I’m sure the party goers didn’t mind as they have time to spare. I remember them from before. Wow talking about family members not knowing when to leave😉
Christy says
Ha ha! This made me laugh out loud! Those guests really have nowhere to be lol! I’m so glad you liked the black on this one! Thank you, Bonnie! XOXO
Lane Harkey says

Whaaaat? No bright shiney skeletons on the shelves? (heeheeheehee)
This is gorgeous. I love armoisre and black is my favorite. We live in a log home, and the black just really shoes off the logs.
So feel free to gift that to me!
Christy says
Ha ha! Thank you, Marietta! I should have decorated this for Halloween…why did I not think of that?? I have all the props decorating my own hutch literally three feet away lol! XOXO

Debbie in TX says
Yep, the black on this hutch makes it a true statement piece. Love it as well as the gorgeous hardware. Also love your showing the temporary displacement of your dining guests, with Miss Lyla right in the middle of everything! When I first noticed the hutch in your dining room, I wondered about the Halloween display. Can’t wait to see the new addition!
Christy says
Thank you, Debbie! Black really does take this one up a notch. And aren’t they funny? These are the best kind of guests…not one complaint lol! Miss Lyla has been hanging out in the dining room with them ever since I brought them out. I don’t know if we should tell her they’re not real ha ha! XOXO
Caye Cooper says
Ya know, I’m not usually a fan of black, but this piece is just delicious! It’s not intensely black and I love it! I also love the drawer lining and the hardware. Together with the contrasting white dishes, it’s a beauty! Well done, as usual Christy!!
Have a great weekend.
Christy says
Aww thank you, Caye! I don’t have a lick of black furniture in my house, but I am always drawn to these black pieces! Enjoy your weekend too! XOXO

Julie says
This is stunning! Looks absolutely beautiful!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Julie! XOXO
Jill says
We paid $250 for a crappy black hutch for our kitchen that we had to assemble ourselves. I wish we had gone this route! But I didn’t know about Dixie Belle then!
Christy says
Oh no! It is crazy what they are charging for furniture these days and it’s not even great quality! Now you know for next time! XOXO
Robin says
I did something very similar, painting the hutch black, but left the large top, above the cabinets on top of the doors, the original dark brown stain.
I sprayed the knobs gold.
Dorothy Perrone says
Christy, you always take each piece you do to a beautiful level of class and understated elegance!! Well done!! Have a wonderful day and blessed holidays to you and yours!! You treat us to your wonderful talent and share your education with us and you are always appreciated!! You are a true gem!!
