Hello, beautiful friends! It’s furniture fixer upper time once again, and while I usually have a super needy piece for this challenge (like last month’s piece HERE), my contribution this month was a pretty easy one! I’ve got an unfinished console table makeover. Plus, I’ll be sharing three more I’ve redone just like it! Be sure to check out what my talented friends have for you at the bottom as well!
Here is how this unfinished console table makeover started:

If it looks familiar, it’s the last of many my dad made a couple of decades ago. He would make them and my mom would paint them. We did several craft markets a year and they sold a ton of these tables! I would take my dolls and we would make what seemed like a small fortune on those weekends! But boy did we earn it! If you know, you know!
My dad eventually gave the final four to me, and this is the last one.
Clean
As always I started with a good cleaning using White Lightning, mixing one TBSP into a half gallon of warm water. Using a terrycloth sponge, I got to work:

Fill holes
Next, I filled the small holes left by the nail gun, plus a few scratches, with Dixie Mud filler:

Sand
Once that was good and dry, I sanded those areas, gave it a good vacuum, and then wiped away any remaining dust with a clean cloth, and we were ready for business!
Paint
For this table, I chose Savannah Mist by Dixie Belle, one of my favorite blues:

I gave it two coats for perfect coverage.
I’m not sure if you can see in that photo above, but the top of this table had vertical ridges all the way across it. It wasn’t noticeable until I painted, and I wasn’t sure that sanding it would fix it completely. But I had an idea to camouflage it.
But first, I used my distressing block to faux distress the edges with white:

I really wanted a relaxed, coastal feel. (You can faintly see the ridges in that photo above also.)
Whitewashing over Paint
That brings me to my idea to camouflage the ridges on top: whitewashing! There are a couple of ways to get a whitewashed effect. One is using Whitewash Glaze which works great and also acts like a sealer. I’ve done that many times and it works great.
The other method is by watering down some paint, applying it. and then wiping it back. I already had Fluff white handy, so that is the method I went with.
I watered it down a bit (maybe 25% water) and applied it with a brush:

I then went back over it right away with an applicator sponge to wipe it away:

You might have to go over it a couple of times, and if you don’t like how it looks, add more paint and wipe back again.
Adding a tiny detail
I honestly thought I was done here. I just wanted a simple, breezy table, but you know sometimes I can’t leave well enough alone!
I ended up pulling out the leftovers of this Whispers by the Marsh transfer:

And chose just the smallest detail to add to the corner…

I was satisfied with that one small addition!
Seal
I then sealed the table with two coats of Clear Coat in the satin finish using the blue sponge to apply it:

(Although this was a simple redo, I worked on it over a few days as you can see by the wardrobe changes ha ha!)
Unfinished Console Table Makeover Reveal
Here’s how she looks now!

We were in the middle of a nor’easter here on the coast when I took these photos, so it was a gray day!

The whitewashing is subtle, but really adds something. And it camouflaged the imperfections on the top perfectly…

Visually, your eyes see the pattern in the whitewashing rather than the ridges.
How about that cute starfish knob??

Ir started out like this:

It was a simple wooden knob I had saved from something else. I had painted it and never used it. I decided to pull out this Seashore Treasures Mould and make it super cute with a tiny starfish!
I cast it using Amazing Casting Resin, and I cast a few other pieces to try them out, while I was at it:

Here is how the others look…they fit the tops of the knobs perfectly!

It’s best to pull them out of the mould right away while they are still warm as they shape really easily that way. (You can also warm them up with a hair dryer or by popping them in the microwave.)
I attached my little starfish with Thick and Quick glue and then painted it to match the table, also whitewashing and sealing.

SO cute!

But Christy, how did you do a coastal makeover without any stripes??
Aha!
They’re in the drawer ha ha!

Y’all know I couldn’t skip the stripes on this one!

And the tiny transfer detail I added? Here it is!

Just for fun!

And remember I have three more of these tables I’ve redone
Table #1
Here is the first rendition I shared way back in March of 2017:

The top did get wide stripes on this one…

Unfinished Wood Console Table Makeover
Can you believe that was almost a decade ago?
Table #2
The next one I redid was a year later in November of 2018…

I added words to the top of this one…you can see them a bit here:

How to Paint Unfinished Wood Furniture
It says, “What happens at the beach stays at the beach.” It was a fun one!
Table #3
And the third one I redid was just this year. These last two had been stored on top of a cabinet in the garage, and when I did a major clean out of my work space, I pulled them down and dusted them off.
Here is how this one turned out:

I used the leftovers from the Chirping Charm transfer on this one…

Oh so beautiful, I love all 4 of them. If I could only choose one thought it would be number 4. If I lived closer it would be mine all mine because I would run to your booth to buy it!!! I remember every make over on these cute console tables, to bad you don’t have any more!
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! That one would fit right in here too! It was kind of sad to see the last one gone, but glad it finally got its day too! Have a wonderful weekend! XOXO
Denise Dorn says
Wow! Before I tell you my favorite, I must tell you how much I love what you did to the drawer pull. Totally genius! My favorite is #3. I am partial to dramatic black furniture. I also always love the way you line the drawers of your furniture. So classy and so finished. Thanks for sharing your amazing make-overs. Now let’s decorate for Halloween!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Denise!! I am a sucker for a starfish, so that tiny starfish knob was especially fun, but I have a feeling number three will be the clear winner! I can’t wait to get to decorating!! XOXO
Pauline Elliott says
Because your dad’s console tables were basically but classic, they all turned out well, but for different spaces. I know the area you sell in pretty well and think each piece would be a good fit and make the right state in the many renditions of coastal charm to cottage cozy!
Christy says
Thank you, Pauline! I hope they are still being enjoyed wherever they ended up! XOXO
Geri Davis says
They are all so pretty it’s hard to choose which one I like the best, I think today’s and the black one are tied for my favorites! I can see that as an entry table in a beach house!
Christy says
Thank you, Geri! Number three was a great version, and this one would make a perfect entry table in a beach house for sure! XOXO
Lorri R says
Christy they are all lovely but I do like the last one you did because it looks so elegant in just one color. The other one I like is the Beach one with the saying. Im sure you would be able to put that in any room and it would look nice.
Christy says
Thank you, Lorri! That sea green was so pretty too! XOXO
Denise - Salvaged Inspirations says
That little starfish detail on the knob is ahhh-dorable Christy, love it! And thanks for sharing all your other beautiful console table makeovers as well. Pinned XOXO
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! I’m glad you enjoyed them! XOXO
Kathy from JAX says
It’s wonderful that you saved these and how different all of them look and a perfect size. I think I like the black one the best but the new one is very pretty so I guess it’s a toss up! I’m curious if you’ve kept any for yourself…just for memories. I’m going to check out the others. Have a great weekend.
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy! These tables are a great size for sure! I didn’t keep any tables, but I did keep two signw my mom painted that had little houses on it. She made a summer version and a winter version and would paint the tables to match. I kept one of each! XOXO
Ellen Tantlinger says
I like # 3 the best. I’m not in a “coastal” area, so I usually prefer the darker colored finishes. But they are all beautiful!
Christy says
Thank you, Ellen! I like that one too! XOXO
Irene Sokol says
MY favorite is number 4 but it does fit in with my decor. If I were to purchase one for my home it would be number 3. I really love them all.
Christy says
Thank you, Irene!! XOXO
Cecilia says
Oh, I love the starfish knob! I was wondering where in the world you found it! Now I know, lol. Hmmm, my favorite…maybe the “what happens at the beach” one but they’re all fantastic!
🤩Cecilia
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! Isn’t that knob so cute? I have a feeling I’ll be making more of those in the future! I thought that “what happens at the beach” table would be fun in one of the beach rentals down here! XOXO
Cindy Fox says
Although I love your stripes on anything, #3 is my favorite. The black stands out & can be used anywhere. Four good choices. 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Cindy! I think that one will be the favorite overall. It was a pretty one! XOXO
Stormee says
Hard to choose just one as a favorite. My favorite two are the last one with the dark color and the chirping charm transfer and the first one with the whitewash finish and the stripes in the drawer. Love the transfer on the corner also.
Christy says
Thank you, Stormee! I think the dark one might be the winner, but I do love the whitewashed one too! XOXO
Lizzy says
I love this. You chose the perfect color and finish. Great work.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Lizzy! I didn’t realize that I did them all pretty different until I put them in a collage lol! XOXO
Lizzy says
Of course, I like the blue and green one the best!

Tina Goddard says
your work is always so pretty and I love everything you show,
All of the tables look great but I love table #3. Even though we live in Florida, we don’t have beachy furniture. That beautiful table would fit right in with our furniture. Love it!
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much, Tina, thank you! I think the majority picked that one! XOXO
Marcie says
Very coastal! The whitewash adds interest but my favorite part is that knob. You always come up with great ideas, Christy.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Marcie! I have a whole stash of those wooden knobs, and now I know what to do with them! XOXO
Michele M. says
Oh how difficult to pick a fav! They’re all so wonderful and well done – but – your latest coastal one is my fav. That’s my very fav of all your paint colors! I love the subtle whitewashing. Oh that one will be hard to let go, I am sure -especially since your father made it and it is the last one. ♥
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! I think that one is my favorite also. It would fit right in around here! It is a bit sad to see them all done now! XOXO
Jeanne says
Hi Christy,
The latest is my favorite. Love the knob idea.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Jeanne! Now I have an idea for the other wooden knobs I’ve been hoarding lol! XOXO
Natalie says
That coastal blue + whitewash combination is SO pretty! And the tiny transfer detail in the corner is exactly the kind of little surprise that makes a piece feel special.
Christy says
Thank you, Natalie! I loved the two birds…they reminded me of a father and son! XOXO
